It's definitely been a great year for movies and this poll certainly proves it. Even though I could only vote for one favorite in each category, I had many favorites in all of them. Like the "Favorite Directorial Debut" category. Oh man, ALL of those guys deserve to win this!

I haven't read the script yet, but from that story description, it actually sounds pretty damn cool. As in, they should take some of the broad ideas from this and rewrite them into a new script. I'd still love to one day see this.

I really liked the whole "high tech" thief stealing some live forever genes. Selling it to Russians though, throw that out. I also really like the double-agent trying to get info out of him even though he's supposed to be in jail. But throw out the love story.

If they gave this more of a Minority Report like feel to it with some style and a much better rewrite, with some of those basic story elements, it could be pretty cool. At least that's my impression just from reading your review (and not the script).

I'm actually looking forward to this. I think it'll be a fun and unique action movie, that is a refreshing change from the bland Hollywood crap. However, it's so all over the map, I'm really not sure what to expect...

Already pre-order the Amazon exclusive a while ago. It's the best of the bunch. Nothing beats that little miniature Enterprise model!

Plus that Target one looks like a giant piece of plastic crap. I like their "ideas" for DVD cases, but they're so cheap that they're not worth buying.

I'm going to call bullsh*t on the claim that "he would never openly reveal plot-details of his script." Writers and directors and producers do that ALL the time. And he's not revealing MUCH. This is the FIRST time over the last year that he has said something that isn't very broad and all-encompassing.

That said... I don't know if he is actually getting far with this. But I think, especially after this update, that it would be terribly stupid of Warner Brothers NOT to take this idea. In the end (because of the publicness of Millar's statements) if we see something that ISN'T as good as this idea, we're all going to be preaching that "they should've done Millar's idea!" I hope that WB is smarter than that...

To answer your question: no. You're wrong on this one. And I'm not nerdgasming either... In fact, I think you've gone to the entire opposite side of nerdgasm.

Vic, I hate to say it, but you can't use personal experiences as a basis for the success of a film. Just because you and your friends think the subject matter is too dark to take your kids doesn't mean their are millions of others who will take them. Additionally, you're not accounting for the millions of males aged 18 to 34 who will be seeing The Dark Knight and that's all this needs to pass $100 million in its opening weekend.

If I have to recall stories of my own, I can't even begin to tell you how often I've heard people say that The Dark Knight is the one movie that they actually care about going to see opening weekend in theaters. The viral marketing has been perfect, the hype has been growing and is immense, everything about this is set to open HUGE. And it will, despite you're own worries.

You'll see soon enough, but this just seems to be a case of retaliation in opposition to the buzz for The Dark Knight. It will be big, but I'm not going to predict a number. I will just say that you're very wrong on this one buddy.

You know, I would've argued that the point of all this footage would be to keep getting more and more people interested, cause eventually there are the people who are only persuaded by seeing endless footage... BUT it seems like most of you, even hardcore Iron Man fans, are getting tired of it! And that's why it's such an interesting question regarding whether it could, in the slightest, hurt the movie at all... Though I think just most people have stopped watching anything new.

Vic - Did you hear that the world premiere for Iron Man is the 16th in Europe somewhere?! Damn the system!

And... so after Iron Man comes out, what are you going to write about and cover like there's no tomorrow? :)

Okay, I got something! With that last clip for Iron Man yesterday (and all the TV spots), I've heard people complaining that there is too much Iron Man media coming and its drowning out their excitement (since we've got about 3 weeks left).

Now, I am smart enough to control my influx, but do you think there is a point where we've reached TOO much Iron Man media/marketing? I know that's tough to ask Vic, the self-proclaimed ultimate Iron Man father of all things Tony Stark, but it's still a good topic of discussion.

Now, my belief is that there is NOT too much. This is feeling a lot like the Transformers media infusion (hmmm, Paramount?). Where weeks before it came out there were like 12 TV spots and 10 clips all of badass giant robot action. Similar thing here and I think they're just trying to get as MANY people as possible going "that looks awesome" which will in turn secure a huge opening weekend. Thoughts??

I may be an exception because I write about movies for a living, but anyway... It wouldn't affect me because I don't ever rent that many movies. I usually got out and buy new releases from the store as is. If I want to watch something new that I haven't seen, I either Netflix it or just outright buy it (if I've heard it's good). Renting from Blockbuster is a rare occasion.

The other question is if this will affect Netflix at all. Will they not be able to ship new releases until 4 weeks after DVDs are released to buy? Not that I use Netflix all that often for new releases, but I think that would hurt more people than Blockbuster. I thought those brick and mortar stores were all slowly dying anyway.

Meh. It wouldn't really affect me, but I'm sure plenty of others will be annoyed.

As much as I'm open to your list being fairly good, I think there's no way you can really have an "end all" list of best/worst Bonds because EVERYONE has their personal opinion on Bonds no matter what.

Such as, oddly my own favorite is One Her Majesty's Secret Service followed by The Man with the Golden Gun and Moonraker (I think all of these are on your worst list, it's a sad shame). And of course I don't think any Bonds are bad but the Dalton and middle of the Brosnan area got a bit sour. I think the "worst" if there is one was The World is Not Enough with that "Christmas Jones" character sheesh.

I'm always a bit distressed when people go around saying "Connery would make every Bond movie better." Of course when I was younger I still loved all the Moore features and have gone back and watched a few and still loved them. I'm a big Moore fan over anyone. I think Connery was good, but to me, he isn't the end-all perfect idea of Connery.

But then again, this is all opinion! Did you rewatch them before or after Casino Royale? And I assume you're going through the whole new box sets that just came out (love them - have all 4!).

Why exactly were you trying to find bad reviews? Slumdog was a delightful surprise and is a movie that everyone loves. I'm surprised that even critics like Todd McCarthy loved it as much as they did. Calle 13, I don't know why you felt the need to call out my website - FirstShowing.net. We have broken a few scoops but I'll admit that we're based out of Colorado so we don't live in LA and I don't snoop around restaurants and hotels to overhear and find rumors.

However, what we do is a service to the internet combined with a bit of personal subjectiveness. Digg is a whole other story that is not based on who broke the story but rather the way the content is presented. The internet isn't a world of who broke it, it's a world of who present it better. All the newspapers in the world cover the same world wide stories when they're huge, but you choose to read specific ones because you like the content and the way they're laid out that's how it works here on the internet, too.

If you run a site and are having problems having your story "stolen" then it's you own obligation to work yourself to promote it and say you are the original breaker. Digg is user run, it's not just us the webmasters controlling it. It's the users who control the internet...

Am I alone out here, are there any more of you that didn't like Bubba Ho-Tep? I may even say Campbell's Man with the Screaming Brain was better! All I know is that as fairly entertaining and well done Bubba Ho-Tep was, it was a boring film that didn't really leave me feeling as complete as Army of Darkness or anything else... and so therefore I'm not praising it.

I mean, here's my own list of movies this year with female leads: Freedom Writers, Miss Potter, The Reaping (another Warner Brothers failure), Waitress, Hairspray, Knocked Up (partially), A Mighty Heart, An American Crime, Year of the Dog, Eagle vs Shark, and Once. Also coming up are a few more really big female lead films: Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Enchanted, Atonement, and especially Juno.

Dedication is mediocre at best. The Nines I don't like. The Savages is okay but it's trendy to like it. And Sunshine, despite how much I LOVED the movie, I do NOT like that poster. HIs face is terribly cropped into that random curved sun-like piece of it. THAT is not a good poster, THAT is terrible Photoshopping and I'm not excited to see that on your list. Otherwise, it's not a bad selection, but still not better than mine!

I agree with Nick - I hate her, at least in a Rich Kelly movie! And the replier, I thought her last few films were flops. She may have been star power after There's Something About Mary, but in the recent year she's been bringing doom to the box office. Kind of like Jessica Alba - all of her like 5 movies in the last year have failed miserably, so I don't know what kind of star power that is...

As for this - if you look at the footage, I'm trying to figure out what in the hell it exactly is?! There's some guy standing on a huge pedestal with green screens all around him and it's hazy. What the heck is going on? There is some very weird stuff happening...

This is why I love Rich Kelly - this could be awesome and dark and full of twists and we have no clue!

You guys are just nit picky, c'mon! They don't look that bad and there's no reason to complain about the look of them or whatever... And while in this photo it looks inspired by Batman, I've seen it otherwise and it's still unique - the cape especially puts it apart.

I really don't why there is so much negativity over here on this end for these photos. I think this look incredible, absolutely stunning. They show you that Snyder definitely knows what he is doing and that this really is going to kick a lot of ass.

So please, besides the supposed "rip-off" (wah wah cry me a river) and "stuff on the edges" complaints, can you give me a REAL critique as to why these images "aren't that good"????

Trebek, you have to realize Neil, Peter, and I are all huge supporters of American Teen - we loved it. It was more than just a teen documentary, we know that because all of us have watched it at least 2 times or more!

We're coming out here to debate because, as has been said, anyone can say what they want. But we're trying to rationally explain that their worries about this being another Hills rip-off of boring teen movie are not correct. People can have their opinions, but we want to do our best to tell you that there is a lot more to see in American Teen and we hope you seek that out. This isn't The Hills - this is not only actually real, but not a glossy MTV hype creation. American Teen is worth your time and money and we will fight until the end when everyone actually goes out and sees this in theaters and determines that for themselves. :)

Anyway, I loved this movie. Saw it at the Toronto Film Festival and it ended up as one of my faves of that fest. Really funny sex comedy without the graphic sex. It's just a well-made comedy about 5 couples and the quirks of sex - definitely suggested!

I talked about this issue before in my own article here on FirstShowing.net.

This is the exact problem that is causing this to become such a talked-about issue: doing "the math" is not true justification for concern. It's just throwing around numbers. I mean, seriously, does anyone REALLY believe that JUST because they bought GTA IV (supposedly 6 million people), ALL of them will NOT go see Iron Man? That's a ridiculous claim! There are so many variables to every individual person's considerations that there is no realistic way to determine how big of an impact GTA IV will actually have.

Anyway, thankfully you agree with me on this argument. And you're right - they're going to use GTA IV as a scapegoat no matter what if it doesn't perform as expected. I don't really know what to predict right now but I am VERY anxious to see how this weekend goes. I'll definitely be reporting back to everyone on Monday night/Tuesday after the GTA IV launch, Thursday night after the midnight showings, and Friday after the regular opening.

Awesome recap bro! Great work! There's even stuff I didn't know, like that Sinbad and The Island almost caused them to bankrupt! Crazy! It's amazing how studios can nearly DIE because a movie underperforms, but that's how Hollywood works...

As for the current situation, I'll say again what I said in my article - I really think Paramount is a great studio, there have just been a few flops that were due to the movie's just being bad. If Spielberg and Para both smarten up and figure out how to work together, it could be a great relationship. But if not, it wouldn't hurt to move on to bigger and better. Although I really am not fond of Universal...

I LOVED the trailer... I hate to say it - but I thought it was 10x better than the new Watchmen trailer... Really, it blew me AWAY it was frickin' intense!! All these crazy scenes... There was even a huge snow monster and all kinds of stuff! Plus Kirk looks like he gets his ass kicked by Spock about 20 times. I really loved it - I am probably more excited for Star Trek now than nearly anything else!! :)

I frickin' LOVE this movie! One of the most underrated sci-fi films of all time. Jude Law and Ethan Hawke are fantastic. I just picked up the Blu-Ray a few months back - and it's worth it because this looks great in high-def, too. Such a phenomenal film - I hope more people have come to appreciate it - since it was 11 years ago that it first was released.

Are you KIDDING?! Jackman is the ONLY good choice! He has an off-screen persona second to none and has a stage background to top it all off! I don't know why people are struggling with this news so much?!

Obviously the Academy wanted to find a non-TV personality and non-comedian for this show. And looking at all the options, would you rather have someone like Justin Timberlake hosting or Jackman, who is very light hearted, very smart, and a great person both on and off screen. He'll do a great job! It may still have some comedy, but it'll be a very different show, and I HOPE everyone comes to love it in the end!

Personally, I think this is a brilliant choice! Can't wait to see the Oscars...

It's not that I don't think this obviously says more about the film than just Brad Pitt's face... But seriously, this is creepy. I'm just saying the honest truth. Maybe if you've seen the film or a hardcore cinephile, you'll know enough about the movie to call this poster "beautiful."

But if you think of middle Americans, they'll probably shriek and go "what the heck?!" if they were to see this. I bet you some uneducated moviegoers might have even thought it was a horror movie! Of course it's bad! No good movie deserves to be pirated. It's a catch-22 in that, yes, if it were put out in a wider release, more people would see it, BUT, to actually do that and have it be financially successful, less people would need to pirate it to begin with.

And I honestly think blaming a limited release is never an actual excuse for pirating. That's just what everyone says to try and justify illegally watching a movie!

I agree with you that people read reviews a lot less now before than after seeing a movie. Of course it's all about traffic and hits and being first and so on, but at the same time, reviews are only criticized after the fact and not as important as other marketing ideas playing into the opening of a film.

But at the same time, look at Watchmen, I think the negative reviews hurt its opening weekend, because everyone kept hearing that Snyder didn't pull it off, and that caused them to become worrisome. Reviews are important, I agree, but I don't know how much anymore. A bigger question here that I don't even have the answer to...

Uh, they had some footage... Michael Bay was there and he showed a bunch of footage on the last day during the banquet dinner.

Plus, this was a big promo marketing thing for Paramount, so it was just a bit of promotion sort of because "they were there" in Vegas anyway... Kind of like, why not, a bunch of ShoWest attendees will see it.

It's not that it's about excessive talking being problematic, per se, it's just that for people expecting Tarantino going all out with action, it's not going to be good when they see mostly talking scenes. Not to say that what you've got on this so far is great, but... this could've gone up to 20, because you're missing the likes of Saving Private Ryan, RoboCop (for its time), more horror movies (Saw? but I know this is sort of non-horror), Braveheart, Starship Troopers (or any Paul Verhoeven movie), etc. But otherwise, what's there so far is a good list. Makes me want to watch them all again...

Not a good set of selections but I think there are some "discrepancies." First off, where's Rendition?! The one with Reese Witherspoon?! That looks way Oscar worthy - I have a feeling Reese is definitely going to be nominated.

Secondly, In the Valley of Elah is DEFINITELY going to be nominated. It's not going to be missed. In fact, it's going to take the place of Elizabeth: The Golden Age - what the HECK?! This movie looks awful, it's a BORING period piece, it does NOT have a place in the Oscars at all!! And Atonement, doesn't feel like it should either... but who knows, I've heard good things, I want to see it.

And lastly, Lust, Caution for the win? Are you sure... I'm sure it's great, but not a win. A foreign language film will NOT win over In the Valley of Elah, a downright look at how f'ed up America is... C'mon Nate!

I'm with Peter here - this looks fantastic and I'm not sure why you're missing the excitement on this one. It's Pixar, you should know they won't screw up. Secondly, he's such a cute frickin' robot and if you watch the trailers you'll know that. Only amazing things can come from a little guy that damn cute! The fact that he's going to leave earth and go save humanity in some way is what gets me more curious. I think you just need to keep watching these trailers and keep looking at the Pixar aspect and just what we'll expect - then you'll get it.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what to make of your review Nate, it was kind of conflicted. Either way, it was a good read, but I don't think it was even a perfectly accurate view of your own opinion... Or, well, hmm, how do I put it? :)

First, I think the inclusion of so much throat slitting / blood was a perfect thing. It's hard to explain my thoughts, but he's ruthless and it added a certain, almost "tangible", level to the film. If it were just a film with every but that, it wouldn't have had the same end result and feeling - that dark, almost gross, and sick feeling that they're trying to bring out anyway.

It seems you liked the musical and the acting the directing, but were just sacred or disgusted away by the blood and dark nature of it. I think you're issue is that you went in wanting to like it because "everyone" is saying it's awesome, and you were trying, but the problem is you seem like you just don't like horror and/or dark movies and can't get over that. It's trying to be bigger than it is, the movie, and it sucked you in and spat you out unfortunately.

I saw Nat Treas at the theater last night with a sold out crowd and this Wall-E trailer played in front of it. It had the most vocal / loud responses out of any preview that showed. People were laughing at every new scene except at the end got the "but wait, is there more?" feeling which I feared.

But I LOVE the way they're marketing this with the trailers. Each new one adds about another 30 seconds onto it continuing the story. The first few introduced Wall-E, then this latest one adds on the story of the ship coming to earth and Wall-E hitching a ride on it. Where to from there?!

Although I'm a huge HD-DVD supporter, I'll admit that I think the war is over. I think this was the final blow. We'll see what else CES holds, including new players and lower costs and that sort of thing, but this has just changed everything. The fact that they cancelled even shows the HD-DVD group is concerned.

The real result will be if people continue to adapt and get cheaper Blu-Ray players and better ones and so on. If that continues to go in the "right" direction for Blu-Ray, then it's 100% over. And you know what, I'm not too concerned. I've always preferred supporting the step to HD rather than just one side or the other. And now I'll be buying Blu-Ray and it'll be fine anyway.

I really think this is the end though. It's the first final big step and everything that comes after this will just start pushing it further towards Blu-Ray.

Oh thank goodness you put Lord of the Rings: Return of the King!!! I would've had to bitch and moan like crazy if that wasn't on here. Considering Return of the King is my absolute favorite movie of all-time and also considering I believe it is one of the greatest films ever made that deserves to be in the Top 5 on IMDb, it is certainly deserving of a Best Picture Oscar. Glad you included it.

The rest are pretty good choices as well. I haven't even heard of All About Eve or Midnight Cowboy, and West Side Story, c'mon... But what about Gladiator man?! Another good one!

Okay, HOW can this movie be THIS good?! The trailer looked awful! Not awful to the point where it was "just a trailer", but that this movie in no way could be good. I really thought it looked so bad I could not even give it a chance.

I'm thinking this is another Dan in Real Life. All the "critics" said the movie was good, with a strong script, but I hated it! It was so bland and boring and although everyone found good things to praise it, I couldn't find one good aspect to it. The story was not good... I'm worried Chaos Theory will be the same thing! But I guess I'll have to see for myself.

I just have to give someone flack for this! :)

Whoa, whoa, whoa!! While you got a few of these right - Love Guru, Meet Dave, Mummy 3 - there are a few that are WAY WAY WAY off base.

Kung Fu Panda I have seen and is a GREAT movie. And Zohan may look bad to some in theory but I think it looks like a pretty damn good comedy! Why do you have so much hatred for those two? Wah wah, complain complain, but honestly both of those look much better than all of the others you mentioned and shouldn't be lumped in to this entire category.

Glad you guys mentioned BOTH of these! I (unfortunately) feel like both are going to play very poorly which is sad because they're both going to be phenomenal movies. Two incredible directors - Guillermo del Toro and Fernando Mereilles - and they're not getting enough buzz! Glad to see you guys mention them, they need all the help they can get.

It was boring because it wasn't well paced at all, the dialogue was just awful, and the story took forever to play out... It just kept leading nowhere. Really, for once, I was bored by some British movie, and everything thinks it's the end of the world. Absolutely did not like this movie at all, doesn't deserve the acclaim it's getting.

And Starship Troopers should've won Best Visual Effects in 1997 over that Titanic crap. That Titanic sweep killed lots of good films for no good reason!
