in No More “Mr. Nice Gay”? Is This What We Want? on ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected
We had two old Victorian houses. All the men were in one and the women in the other. We had meetings, did evangelism, a radio broadcast....and we had WORK to do. I cleaned the bathrooms. Bev, my wife, worked in the kitchen. Most of our food was dated food donated by bread companies and the like. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Until it got off-base and a little bit cultic.
Most of the people had come to the Lord through the ministry. Some had been drug users....and one had been a male hustler.
I may blog about it someday.

I bounce back and forth between being depressed by stuff like this....and being hopeful that more will be reached.
My wife and I love San Francisco. We grew up near there and for awhile lived in a Christian commune in Haight-Ashbury (back in the day). But so much as changed since then.
I still pray for the city when it comes to mind. What a mission field!

Wow, that's something you could blog about :) A comparison/contrast of the San Fran you knew then and what you see happening now.
And ... uh ... a Christan commune? What exactly is that?

Wow, 23 years. Wouldn't that mean you haven't seen this person since you were 17???
Yes, I can well imagine you had some catching up to do! Your life is quite different now from when you were 17.
I'm surprised that you only talked for 2.5 hours!

Well, Randy, everyone knows you're fabulous. But to have it in print in the London Times...well, that's something anyway.
Actually, I love the humor that comes from the conferences, some of which, of course, came from you.
I'll never forget Christine's great line when she threw a T-shirt into the crowd: "All the women are thinking, gosh Christine, you can do better than that, and all the men are thinking, wow I wish I had her arm."

I'm all for it...but convincing my wife is another matter.
I had heard Frankie Manning was still alive. That's amazing. But see what good exercise dancing is? Many dancers seem to live to advanced ages. I think both Nicholas Brothers made it into their 90's.

I emailed our daughters with YouTube videos of couples doing the Lindy and asked if they thought I could get their mom to learn with me. Our eldest replied she doubted I could get anyone we know to do that with me. Go to YouTube and enter Lindy Hop and choose the two minute one from the movie Hellzapoppin. WHEW!
It makes Scottish Dance look like a slow waltz.

Yeah. That's why I said try to find an East Coast class first. Lindy is a cross between East-Coast/Jitterbug and the Charleston, which makes it very fast paced with added kicks, aerial, dips, and other tricks. Bear in mind with youtube dance videos, that largely what you're looking at is professional dancers (ie, people who go to competitions and teach classes), or people who are extremely absorbed in dancing as a hobby, posting their routines online, rather than on what you would be learning in a basic begining class. The Hellzapoppin video is of the 1930's-'40's performance dance troupe (ie, they danced w/ people watching them for a living) that actually *invented* Lindy Hop in the first place. Frankie Manning is in that video, and he is still alive and teaching at dance camps all around the world (in his mid-90's!).
You could also just try a ballroom class (which would cover probably waltz, fox trot, cha-cha, and rhumba), but those tend to be slower than swing. You still wind up with a lot of muscle tone, though :)

I'm off the wagon too. I've done the gym thing and it's okay...but it gets boring. I need to exercise with something I enjoy. I'm thinking of trying to get my wife interested in Scottish dance or some other form of vigorous dancing.
I'm also sold on eating low carb (not NO-carb). I feel so great on a low carb diet...and the pounds fall off. It's hard, though, in today's world. Someone brings donuts to work and I'm sunk for the day. I need to lose about 15 pounds. I weigh 35 pounds more than when I got married 34 years ago. But the older you get, the harder it seems to be to lose.

We all gotta' do what we gotta' do ::: smile ::: please don't be offended.
By the way 34 YEARS!? That's awesome. What did you do, get married at two? You don't look old enough to have been married 34 years.
I understand the low carb thing too. I am just willfully choosing to not look at it that way even though I am refraining (for the most part) or choosing lower carb/good carb options.

Nick, see if you can get her to take a swing dancing class (try for jitterbug/east coast before you go all out with Lindy). It's soo much fun.

in On Chris Fabry Live Concerning Ray Boltz “Coming Out” on ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected
There are two very sad consequences from this. One, of course, is that many who struggle and look up to Ray may now feel inclined to follow his example. And the second is the tragic result of following the hollow promise that "embracing" a gay identity will lead to happiness. Ray has looked around the corner and seen something that appears attractive....and so he has turned that corner to pursue the attraction. But that corner leads to a dead end street.

in The Art of Stigmatization on ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected
You have to wonder why people go to the trouble to do such things. If they have talent, they should use their talent for GOOD, not for stigmatizing or demeaning others. I wonder if this person actually thinks what they did was a good thing. Even most people on the other side believe "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." I know you're praying for this person. That's the best you can do, really.

I agree Nick. It baffles me too. I also agree that most on the "other side" try to be civil. Every once in a while though I worry that our culture breeds it though through our media.

Yes, it's a wonderful pick. By giving birth to a Down Syndrome baby earlier this year, it shows she walks the prolife walk. She referred to her new son as "perfect." She has my support. She has been my number one choice for the past month or so.
But get ready. The MSM is gearing up to do a hatchet job on her. Brace yourself.

Yes, many times. Claudette Colbert is a favorite of mine. Did you see the one where she is writer and she meets a soldier played by John Wayne who she believes is perfect for the role of her hero when the book is turned into a movie. The title escapes me, but you'll love it.

I didn't know Texas Chainsaw Massacre had it's own cable channel. And why would it show sappy old black and white films on it?

When I turned 40, I had a mini-midlife crisis. I solved it by visiting a 90 year old friend who said, "Ah, Nick, it's just the shank of the evening for you." She was right. The years after my 40th birthday have been the best years of my life. May they be yours too, Randy.

in Christian Photographer Fined for Refusing Gay Wedding on ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected
I read about this a few days ago and I agree that the photographers had a right to not shoot the wedding...but I wonder if it was just because it was a gay "wedding" or do they routinely turn down shooting weddings that conflict with their beliefs? Do they shoot non-Christian weddings? Buddhist weddings? Jehovah's Witness weddings? Do they shoot receptions where there is a lot of excess drinking?
I see reasons both to not shoot the wedding....or, on the other hand, to be present as a courteous and professional photographer who also happens to manifest the presence of Christ.

Great article, Randy. God has had His hand on you. Still does.
Years ago I asked the director of our local AIDS center if any churches were ministering to HIV+ men. He then named one of the most liberal churches in town. No evangelical churches had anything to offer. But then I wonder how well their ministry would be received. I once tried to offer myself as a volunteer to help a man who was in the final stages of AIDS...but when they found out I was a Christian, they weren't interested.

in Living a Derivative Life on ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected
Great insight, Randy. Understanding our identity as God sees us is key to living a successful life, in my opinion. Sadly, when we're insecure in our identity in Christ, we do resort to fleshly responses, one of which can be living the "derivative" life.
Lately I've come to realize that there are really only two essentials, from which all else flows. Those two essentials are:
1. Knowing who God is
2. Knowing who we are in Christ.
If we can grasp both of those two essentials, so much else falls into place.
And learning both of those two essentials really takes a lifetime of discovery. Wonderful and joyous discovery.

Randy, Huckabee and Romney on the same ticket? No way! Most voters would feel that such a ticket was too "religously" top-heavy. It will almost surely be McCain/Huckabee or McCain/some other acceptable evangelical.

I love watching and learning about group behavior. The odd thing is I don't like most reality tv because it isn't really real. So *real* real life stories intrigue me.
