It seems more intuitive to look for the next constraint. For example, Umair Haque's theories about attention scarcity (www.bubblegeneration.com). This viewpoint frames the mechanisms of governance systems and values as tools that preserve attention. Many other tools exist and a "stack" may inadvertently exclude them.

It may be more instructive to look at the steps-of-education to forecast what's next (sorry, can't find the reference):

1. info exists

2. someone becomes aware of the info

3. the info is internalized

4. the info is mechanically practiced

5. the info is expressed and combined in new an unique ways

6. new info returns us to step1

Computers and networks have done a very good job helping organizations progress along these steps, however, the networks have just started to help individuals. Search engines help with steps 1-3 while items like the iPod and social sites integrate information with lifestyles to accomplish 3-5.

"What's next" are tools that preserve attention. They deliver pertinent information and help us integrate it into our work, play, and social exchanges. Governance systems and values are simply part of this equation.

Re: What's next?

Using a "stack" to divine "what's next" may lead us astray. Most of us feel we are solving real problems for real people. While my company creates value by removing boundaries between users and content, there is an ever growing population of challenges and opportunities. The fact that it's getting harder to separate the wheat from the chaff shows the rightness of Umar's position -- attention scarcity drives the new economy. Yes, it's fun to build parts of it.

Re: Fred Wilson Dot VC

I wish the studios would get out of their own way and compete. However, an interesting feedback mechanism exists between the more mundane propositional knowledge and the prescriptive stuff. Joel Mokyr does a great job explaining how these feed each other in his book "The Gifts of Athena". For me, the more experience and knowledge I gain, the more hangars I have for new stuff.

Re: The Plasticity of Strategy (a quick thought)

To paraphrase a recent quote, "What do hot dogs and entrepreneurship have in common? My days teaching navigation at USAFA provide a similar framework:

Destination - Vision
Waypoints - Milestones
Dead Reckoning / Alter Heading - Objectives

DR/AH can be very difficult in the formless void of a startup. But knowing where we're going helps inform the many "alter headings" until we reach the next waypoint.

I really like the way Dick Costolo and Fred Wilson sythesize this exploration with business realities:
http://www.unionsquareventures.com/2007/11/why_...

Re: 5 things that make your social network monetize like crap

Your post highlights a problem in the current ad marketplace, the lack of value placed on user attention. From a user perspective the right message at the right time is extremely valuable. Intuitively, ads presenting these timely messages should also be valuable. Behavioral targeting promises to increase the number of these happy events. In order to do so, it must invert the CTR/engagement curve.

Re: Influentials On The Web Are People With The Power To Link

I've been noodling with a "hyperlink" related theme and your post yielded more insights. As the semantic web further empowers the link, the tendrils of influence will spread beyond pages and blogs to further shape consumption of media, goods, and services.
