in Business Engineering Tips for Startups on Disruptive Thoughts
More kudos for the "three horizons". My days teaching navigation at USAFA provide a similar framework:

Destination - Vision
Waypoints - Milestones
Dead Reckoning / Alter Heading - Objectives

DR/AH can be very difficult in the formless void of a startup. But knowing where we're going helps inform the many "alter headings" until we reach the next waypoint.

I really like the way Dick Costolo and Fred Wilson sythesize this exploration with business realities:

I wish the studios would get out of their own way and compete. I suggest aggregating content from all free services and allowing users to encounter it in their favorite social and search activities...measure, monetize, lather, rinse, repeat.

Steve's lament may sour the tourist but not the entrepreneur. Most of us feel we are solving real problems for real people. While my company creates value by removing boundaries between users and content, there is an ever growing population of challenges and opportunities. The fact that it's getting harder to separate the wheat from the chaff shows the rightness of Umar's position -- attention scarcity drives the new economy. Yes, it's fun to build parts of it.

vruz I agree wholeheartedly.
Those of us who are in it for life don't and shouldn't really care about those who are motivated by things other than creating awesome things as their first priority.
Aligning interests so that things come to fruition, that's of course necessary, just not shifting our priorities and vision because the "dayplayers" say so.

I've seen them come, I've seen them go, I've seen them return, and I'm sure I'll see them go again.

bsiscovick Right on Vada!

Many of us squarely focused on creating new value. Sometimes "tourists" forget that we are essentially 12 years into this crazy experiment of the mass internet/web. We are still in the fetal stages of tapping into the potential of the Net and my money says the pace and quality of innovation will only intensify for the foreseeable future. I, for one, am very excited to be a part of this true revolution!

in 5 things that make your social network monetize like crap on Futuristic Play by @Andrew_Chen

Your post highlights a problem in the current ad marketplace, the lack of value placed on user attention. From a user perspective the right message at the right time is extremely valuable. Intuitively, ads presenting these timely messages should also be valuable. Behavioral targeting promises to increase the number of these happy events. In order to do so, it must invert the CTR/engagement curve.

We should call this Ackoff's Hierarchy of Learning. Just like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, if you starve yourself of a basic item (knowledge) then its impossible to obtain a higher item (wisdom).

To paraphrase a recent quote, "What do hot dogs and entrepreneurship have in common? If you love them don't watch how their made."

The physicist in me likes the idea of focusing on reusable prescriptive knowledge. However, an interesting feedback mechanism exists between the more mundane propositional knowledge and the prescriptive stuff. Joel Mokyr does a great job explaining how these feed each other in his book "The Gifts of Athena". For me, the more experience and knowledge I gain, the more hangars I have for new stuff.

The greatest power is the power you give away. Eye contact does not establish dominance, but conveys importance and power to all parties.
