in Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime addresses OnLive, iPhone competition and used games on VentureBeat
"Used books have never taken off. You don’t see businesses selling used music CDs or used DVDs."
Saying it does not make it so, Reggie. You are not fooling anyone. Like all consumer goods, people will someday sell or discard the things they buy. You have no choice but to compete in the market of your own 2nd hand goods. It is the cost of doing business.

My favorite is MyBlogLog because it let's me see which other members have come by to read my blog, without the reader really needing to take any action other than to be signed in.

in Is Ping.fm a Lame Data-Mining Op? Or is it Just Annoying? on netZoo
Hi Sean and Ryan.
Thanks for the response. I am the one who posted this post in your forums (it says "nameless" for some reason). Anyway, thanks for addressing these issues. It should be normal for users to question the motives of startups when have yet to introduce yourselves to the community in a big way. You gotta respect that. We do see you have a blog an forum. It is great that you removed the "I am now...!" but there is doubt helped you guys gain major traction on 3/18/08. For better transparency, maybe you could put something about yourselves personally int he About Us section instead of Andy having to sleuth around and find out what the names behind this service are and what what your motives might be. I am sure your motives are to help users kick ass and save time, but it just needed a tad more transparency here social media land where it is easy to call this stuff out.
thanks guys.

Hi, Andy.
I tend to think that all of the effort the developers have put into this and a traction they have gained today would be of more value to them long term rather than to use it for some sort of scam. I am sure they will respond to your complains as soon as possible of face more posts just like yours. But in the meantime, people might want to refrain from signing up until these issues are addressed.

in Apple stabs Adobe in the back on Scobleizer
Let's not jump the gun, here. I think there is a logical reason, and I do not think it is to spite them, and I doubt that they will instead port Siliverlight instead. And why would Adobe "retaliate" by not releasing Photoshop or Illustrator for Mac? Those are probably it's two biggest products. How is Apple obligated to support Flash for the iPhone or else Adobe retaliates? I luv ya, but you need to calm down or admit to blowing this up just for page views.

This reminds me of CEA's campaign against anti-consumer technologies in consumer electronics from 2006. http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2006/04/who-are-yo... Consumers will not buy products that restrict them this much. Plus, Defective By Design is quick to point out products that do. RIAA is the enemy of consumers. Cary's messages is being ignored by any CE manufacture who actually wants to sell something Any any that do cut a deal with them in some way are substituting longer term gains for short term gains, not to mention brand loyalty. RIAA, die already. You are no longer welcome or needed.

I don't get it either. Ron Paul is against net neutrality. However, he is against the Patriot Act which allows the erosion of civil liberties aided by technology. I want to know his position on intellectual property. It looks like he is anti-special interest, that is good.

If you bookmark each MP3 in del.icio.us and then burn a feed at Feedburner that points to the del.icio.us rss feed (could be a feed for items tagged: bestofITC08 but from a single user) and then subscribe to that feed in iTunes, it can be done this way.

That's a good, easy way to do it. Thanks.

in Why Lane Hartwell is wrong on Mathew's comments
It seems anyone who "supports" Lane Heartwell is giving her a free pass to stay unenlightened by the lessons that Lawrence Lessig has taught us. Has she not heard of Creative Commons or at least know that her actions go against the spirit of the creative community? Why fight this fight? Clearly Brian Solis and Thomas Hawk are enlightened in this way becuase they know the realities of the net. If you don't want people to use your work, don't put it online. Lane Heartwell gets to act like big media by using DMCAs and hiring lawyers? What kind of lesson is this to groups like The Copyright Coalition? It shows them that we, in the creative/remixing/web2.0/hippySF community don't practice what we preach. Someone needs to give her a copy of Free Culture or at least make her watch Lessig's TED presentation. I hope Lane does not go to the Creative Commons party tonight or she will be booed on arrival for being an IP bully. She is really no different than RIAA suing children and grandmothers. The net requires the record companies change their business model or else make everyone criminals. And this lesson should remind Lane that getting mad about occasional lack of attribution just becuase she is a pro photographer is a waste of her energy. Go ahead and hide all of your photos on Flickr as private. Remember, obscurity is a greater threat than piracy.
Sure, things could have been handled differently, but I think she made them worse. Lane, do it for the love first, and the money secondarily or be upset all the time. The choice is yours.

Creative Commons is not synonymous with unregulated sharing of content. From the CC about page (h ttp://creativecommons.org/about/ ):
"Creative Commons defines the spectrum of possibilities between full copyright — all rights reserved — and the public domain — no rights reserved. Our licenses help you keep your copyright while inviting certain uses of your work — a “some rights reserved” copyright."
If I understand your comment (correct me if I'm wrong), you're saying that we should just ignore the various versions of copyright that CC clearly defines and just assume that if it's on the internet, it's free for the taking.
Maybe you're the one who should stay away from that Creative Commons party.

Also, make it possible to download blog posts via RSS (portable RSS reader). In other words, make is possible for anyone (especially the owner) to put content on it with no restrictions, no exclusive content providers. If they don't do this, consider it dead already.

Bundle it with 1000s of books in the public domain (and not stupid DRM!!) to get people hooked, and then they should buy new books.

I think in the details of this act, Gonales wants to prosecute only those who try to make a profit by infringing on copyright. Other are saying he is just grandstanding so he can get a new job with RIAA or MPAA. Either way, he is a scumbag.

This feature seems like a logical next step for AppleTV as well since they added a feature to allow .mac and iPhoto to do photocasting.

It is hard to understand at a glance what an up or down vote means. I guess it means did you find this bit of info helpful or not? Could it be misconstrued to imply that you would vote down a con because it is a con?

in Twitter is the New Gate Jumper on Chris Brogan
Chris, I was thinking the same thing. In Naked Conversations, Scolbe and Israel say (not a direct quote) "it does not matter how many subscribers you have, but who subscribes to you." With Twitter, you can add some A-listers and they will add you. Their once illusive attention is now yours. I fear that we are in honeymoon stage of Twitter, and the sweet spot we are in right now might not last tool long. Someone posted about the Dunbar number and Twitter today. If Twitter is the next iteration of blogging, it might have some of the same problems as blogging did, and it will be interesting to see it shakeout.

in TiVo’s Evan Young Discusses the Details of the new TiVoCast Service on iMedia Law Blog
If TiVo could change their business model into just making boxes (or at least just accept that as part of their model), this might work. I think the reason they want to cut deals with content makers is because they are used to some sort of revenue stream in the from of subscriptions to TV programming info. If they make you pay, they can be the gatekeeper to the content and give a cut to the content makers. If they let anyone subscribe to any feed and the same user does not care to record regular TV, all they really need to do is make a "dumb box."
I think they may be better of just allowing users to use the TiVo as a dumb box since that is what some users may want. If they don't someone else will come along (Apple iTV) and make that happen. I don't really watch TV, but I do watch video podcasts. If TiVo allows me to download any video podcast I want, I'll buy one today (I may be in the minority).

Why listen to the radio when you can watch TV (both sight and sound is better/more/faster right?)
Why go to the concert when you can just download the song for free?
Why text chat when you can skype?
Why meet in person when you can just meet in Second Life?
Oh, freedom of choice.
