It's a journey that we all walk in. I'm sure there is one of the 6 character traits (portrayed as competition runners here) in all of us, though when we look back onto our own lane, it's us (like you mentioned - our shortcomings and weaknesses) that we are up against. :D

Thanks a gazillion!

Daniel

Re: Running and Finishing the Excellence Mile! - Part 2 of 2

It sure feels fantastic finishing this article! :D

Re: Running and Finishing the Excellence Mile! - Part 1 of 2

Hey Karl!

Great having you here. Hey!

That's a huge compliment. I'd gladly take it. You've just made my day that encouragement in the comment. :)

I'd say that it is the people that we follow and learn from that made us who we are today. I'm fortunate to be exposed to great personalities since 5 years ago, and never looked back from then.

You too have a powerful story and life now that I'm sure many would like to emulate the successes you have today. Thanks for the comments here! I was intending to get other's feedbacks in first before I start writing out mine, so all of us have a stake in this conversation and participate as equals here. :)

@Shilpan: When was that when you arrived at US and what was the thing that made you go for the change? I'm keen to find out more!

@Evelyn: I'm sure you'll be an awesome mom to your wonderful children! The stories you share on your site are fitting to share with them too. Especially the ones with the 17 types of smiles. I'm sure it will be a great conversational piece for years to come.

--

Here's my add to this entry that I've shared with a friend on Live Messenger earlier:

It was on a Sunday, on a week when my birthday was on in the late February 2007, and it was also a church day for me right at Singapore Expo which was at the other end of the island.

I had ran out of cash in my wallet and left with S$8 in my bank account back then, and had almost no way of going for the service, where a prominent pastor from Sweden was having a 3 day conference in.

During those days, I was severely lacking in confidence to speak or talk to anyone as easily and openly as today, and used to have doubts. What made matter worse was that I was already running late for the day, and I couldn't bear to step out of my house as there was like none of my friends who are still at the western side of Singapore that I could look for in the last minute to hitch a ride to the east where the event was held.

It was already 30 minutes since the start of the service, and I had just arrived at the nearest public train system and I sat at one corner not knowing what to do. I felt quite dumb for even stepping out of my house in the first place with nothing on hand.

Then an idea struck. Which was to go have a talk with the train station's personnel.

I did that, only after procrastinating and thinking if that was even a good idea at all for a whole 5 minutes.

To my surprise, I was given a free pass without needing to have any long discussion or anything. And I made it to church after 1 hr and 45 minutes. Interestingly, I was allowed entrance and in the midst of 8,000 people in the hall, the pastor started talking about the topic on being prosperous and trusting God. It was the start of a juicy message when I came in. :)

That was a memorable moment that defined me today in 3 ways;

1. Act of random kindness / generosity to make one's day

With the help of a kind assistance from the train station by helping me out without the need to go through any lengthy form of discussions or persuasions, it made my day by getting me to the destination and learning something great from an apostle on that weekend that happened to be on my birthday week.

2. Increased in confidence with faith to trust God

That thought just came out of nowhere after tons of self-questioning since at home. I was already delaying myself and thought of the 100 other reasons to give my friends that I won't be joining them that day. It was only when I decided to agree and go forward, that the next simple but powerful thought when acted upon came.

And that idea was quite straightforward too! "Go up and ask the operator in that control room." That was it.

I've redefined the word "faith" in an easier way to understand and which made sense in the 2nd part of The Excellence Mile. Look up there to find out more about that word. :)

The widely known universal principal of the "ask and you shall receive" quote worked in this scenario, and gave me a great story to tell about from that moment.

3. Be a people's solution!

Of course one reason why that event sticked is because that was one of the few ways that inspired me to generously help others just by being there, and providing timely solutions to people that are around you.

Let's be someone else's miracle and be a people's solution today! :D

--

Alright! Now your turn to share more stories and how that had defined you, and how much you had with you at that time.

That would be awesome. Checking back later guys!

Re: Name A Defining Moment in Your Life and How Much Did You Have in Your Pocket At That Time?

@Karl: Woah. That was quite a nasty experience. True too, that we now know that we need goals in our lives, and treasure every single minute and second of it to not be overly obsessed with drinking and more booze. Big changes 7 years later. I can see. :D

@Chris: Hey! Thanks for coming over here. :) Your story reminds me of one I had too when I was 14. My friend and I looked over the soccer field with the current school team playing. We told each other that we would represent our school in a year or two. I took that seriously and in 1 year I got into the team, and shortly after, got a handful more of friends who we played together and represented our school colors. Our capabilities are definitely boundless when we put our mind and heart to it.

@Mavarick: Yosh! Get your A's into A'stars! Cos' you are an awesome pal. Even until now that both words "smart" and "young" applies. :)

Have a great day ahead!

Re: Complete Lives With Beautiful Words

Hey Robert!

I personally believe that it saves a whole lot of time to mention the strengths of others and like by praising in an audience that will build one another up to greater effect!

Seen your article too. Glad that you had a wonderful supervisor that had helped you through that encouraging words. :)

--

Yo Jephthah!

You were the one who got me into the whole entrepreneurial mindset shake-up which helped me get my big break in the majority of the text in the starting paragraphs.

And I too remember two more instances where you were the one who said a few words that helped me see tremendous breakthrough results like the one in the gym where I was doing the leg exercise thing by pushing the weights with my feet. You said that "all things are possible", and I got the whole weights lifted up gradually from 6 bars or so to the entire stack. That was one of the coolest experiences that I had!

Let's continue building people up like how you had done so all the while. :D

--

All of you are awesome people! Haha. And that this is a powerful approach when we can tap into it as fast as flicking a switch to on it, and move on together with the state to replicate the successes in new ventures! :D

@Doc KC - Hey! It's the first time seeing ya here. How would I best address you? :) This sure does apply with the part where you said about "why reinvent the wheel" when we have a success formula in our hands with our experiences already. However we sure can take that one step further and add in new and modern ways with the methods, techniques, and state of emotions that we had before to conduct a new venture - with successful results too!

@Shilpan | successsoul.com - Digg hard enough! No puns intended I suppose. One of my favorite approaches in regards to build people up is to start with our strengths and areas we are passionate in. Sure helps to get us up and going faster and making us more effective. ;)

@Renae - Lol! Yet again, it can be a double edged sword in a way.

Apart from looking at it as being pawns in the education system, one too can look in a perspective that says that they would love to succeed in becoming a highly valued careerist / employee and thus their education and academic levels would be pushed to match the ever growing needs of the industries they choose to be in. :)

Re: Need We Have Another Reason (to Build People Up)?

@Robert - Heya dude! You are right on too with your point mentioned. Academic results may help only if the person wants to be involved in his work that he had decided to venture into, and that what he had learned would be valuable and relevant only for a probable lesser than a decade with more techniques constantly being thought of and improved on daily.

However, there are too a need of workers to further push the ideas of inventors that are of a massive scale into reality with the methods taught and learned in school - especially during post secondary level education.

Not all is wasted if the person involved had decided his field of work early on in his own academic life.

Re: What’s An Ideavirus?

Me too me too! :p

Re: Taking Off The Jacket

Haha. The cool part about freelancing is that we are paid by projects. And if each project could be completed by lets say... an hour which was estimated to be done in 1 full day, then you get paid for the entire thing for that.

Of course, living as a freelancer requires us to be more frugal than as when we had a job. :)

Re: Travel: A Journey to Expanding Horizons

One of my goals would be to freely travel around the world and meet up with some of the coolest people I know in this planet. The plugin's site stated that it will only send out the messages to first time commentors. However, it seems like the plugin keeps sending out for every single comments.

That's why the new trick now is to keep the messages (that would be sent out) as fresh as possible by changing the text from time to time. :)

Re: Top 10 Must Have Wordpress Plugins For Your Blog

@Sayz - I use Macromedia MX 2004 instead of photoshop. Got this link from Darren's problogger site through his tweet.

Yeah my blog (Winning Everyone) had received a number of comments based on the design itself on the latest entry posted today: http://winningeveryone.com/money-wise/what-you-...

And the comments there were totally off the topic written in that blog entry. Haha. :D

I have a huge header which on its own is a link to the main page of the site, with a uber-big menu bar. Those two are almost the total opposite of the thin-header that you have written about. Yet again, they seem to fit nicely and adds to the color and brought in a dramatic effect to the site.

That's like giving the newer viewers a "wow" experience before getting into the entries that are of a same high quality that's expected from the writers.

The other two things I need to take note of is to make the site's usability up another notch with the menu bar to be the main navigation on the blog, while the 2nd would be to bring in the blogroll feature in a neat way, either by adding them into the footer, or adopt the Rockstar approach that you use in yours. :)

Thanks Chris for this awesome pointers that you wrote in this entry! If you have Twitter, do find me there @Daniel_Richard or http://twitter.com/Daniel_Richard

Re: Example of a Great PR Pitch

I liked the part where in his PR message, he referred himself as "I", that shows that he is really representing himself (he made it clear about that at the start).

And he made it very brief and went straight into 3 short and easy to understand points.

The "Social Media Release" is exactly the key. That's his agenda. He made it easy to find, it was after a short few sentences, and I'm certain that it doesn't require much searching, scrolling, or reading between the lines to know what the sender was up to.

The last part was neat. Instead of blasting a huge composition of the things he could have copied and paste right out from those links, he consolidated them and presented the outbound information in links that are nicely written.

Very human indeed! Sure made us feel important while allowing him to fulfill his task at the same time. :)

Re: 50 Ideas on Using Twitter for Business

I've followed your tweets too Chris. No doubt that even though it made some money, it wasn't really a successful venture.

Their brand had been established towards the fast food industry, and also gearing up for a more healthier image.

There's an expectation from consumers and the market to the various brands that the companies set out to create in the first place.
