If he wrote a business book, it would probably be called something like "The Long, Painful Road to Success". The title alone would scare most people off. But it would be worth reading.

I think there are also hybrids out there. For instance, Mike Myers once described himself as a site-specific extrovert. Offstage he is quiet and reserved. Onstage he lets loose. Again, though, whatever works for you.

It reminds me of what I read about how the Dave Matthews Band and Hootie & the Blowfish initially got the attention of the big labels. Basically their independent albums started outselling the major label albums in the local music stores. I can see how grabbing some audience here and some advertisers there on your own could lead to larger audiences and larger advertising deals.
