SOAP-and-WSDL seem  inappropriate for a lot of bioinformatics. This &lt;a href="http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~hulld/q2007-06-30.html" rel="nofollow"&gt;O'Reilly book on REST&lt;/a&gt; is a great howto, been passing it around the lab here, its a good read if you're into that sort of thing.
