in 5 Mindset Shifts Every Media Executive Needs to Make on RED66
@Albert, certainly nothing new, but many Old-Media Pros still fail to understand the New-Media landscape and the many opportunities it offers.

Got your email... will answer shortly.

in Quick Guide to Configuring GnuPG on your Mac (OS X) | RED66 on RED66
@Rick, I wrote this last year, before Leopard came out, but it did run in Tiger back then. Can't tell you if it runs now because I haven't gotten around to reinstalling this setup on the new OS.

Let me know if you ever find something that works.

Thanks.

Actually, it was correct in the original article, but WordPress was converting the two consecutive dashes into one emdash character.

I found the solution (using the HTML character entity for a dash, instead of typing two dashes) at "How To Add Double Dash To WordPress Posts".

Thanks for the correction. I thought I'd fixed that already.

@M.Borghese,

Excellent point about search engines... They've truly made the long-tail of content possible. Search engines have allowed many content producers to focus on what they're really passionate about... If enough people can find your quirky videos, there's no need to think about making them conform to the mainstream public.

I'll be developing each of the points made in this article further in the coming weeks.

in How companies that learn will take your lunch money on RED66
@Angelo,

WHAT you're learning is very important. You make a very crucial point about staying on the cutting-edge of soon-to-be-obsolete technology. Betamax (which was actually superior to VHS), MiniDiscs and HD-DVD are good examples.

What this underscores is the importance of encouraging a learning culture in organizations. If you listen closely enough, and have the mechanisms in place for knowledge to travel throughout your organization, you're bound to hear dissenting voices raising red flags. Never put all your eggs in one basket...

The hard part about all this, is keeping a healthy balance between staying informed and staying focused.

Anyone know of a good translation of "quedarse sin el chivo y sin el mecate"?

Warren, glad you find it useful. Feel free to share and use as needed.

I also wrote a Spanish-language version of this article at:

in case anyone prefers that.

in Take the Google Trends Pepsi Challenge on RED66
I received this comment from one of my e-mail subscribers:

I believe that people are either Pepsi persons or Coca-Cola (coke) persons.
I also believe that personality --not the taste itself-- is the reason for
such choice. That would be an interesting topic to study.

What do you think? Are you a Pepsi-person or a Coke-person? Can tastes be defined by personality?

in HD-DVD stuns Blueray on RED66
Hey, using a modified query to account for possible variation of both terms, HD-DVD pulls ahead again.

Check out http://tinyurl.com/ys7crq where I compare "hd-dvd | hddvd | hd dvd" against "blu-ray | blueray | bluray | blue-ray"

Take that, Blu-ray! ;-)

in HD-DVD stuns Blueray on RED66
Breaking News... Blu-Ray comes from behind and double-stuns HD-DVD.

Thanks to Alex for pointing out that getting the terms correct goes a long way when analyzing Google Trends!

Good thing I put that disclaimer about "preposterous conclusions" on the first post of this series. ROFL!

in Tracking conversations with Twitter on RED66
I'm glad you found it useful.

And the best thing is it works like a charm. I've been using it for several days now and it really helps. Just make sure to choose your tracking terms wisely or you'll be inundated by tweets.

I'm tracking AAPL and it's been like an Twitsunami for the past few days.

in Using Twitter as a Marketing Tool on RED66
Mike, I also keep my Twitter feed private and am still deciding on a tweeting style to use.

I'm leaning more towards using Twitter for more public stuff (new blogs posts, interesting articles, opinions) and using Facebook's status message for "Friends & Family" style announcements.

UPDATE: As Jim has quickly pointed out, he will add you to his Twitter list when you add him (and I guess he also proved my point that, if asked nicely enough, he'd add you as well).

I should add that Jim Long's Twitter feed is one of the most entertaining I've come across, as he routinely engages in audience-participation exercises while he shows off Twitter to his "real world" friends.

in Facebook to Allow Contact Grouping. Is LinkedIn history? on RED66
@Mike Rohde:

Well put, Mike. LinkedIn is indeed quite static: this is my resume and these are my business pals. Enjoy.

Facebook, on the other hand, is very dynamic and quite interactive. I'd love to see what happens when they add some business tools. The easy mix of private messaging and public walls would be a nice boost for any business relationship, provided we could keep these -if we wanted- away from the rest of our more private lives.

I'd post a lot more on FB if I could group my contacts...

The other area were grouping will help is in managing a large number of friends. Eventually people get lost in a sea of contacts and we're back to corresponding with just a few of them.

Tagging would be awesome as well, though I haven't heard any plans for that. Tags would allow you to keep groups -to set privacy levels- and tags -to categorize your friends anyway you wish. Thus, you could send an article to your friends tagged "tech," a blog post to those tagged "readers," while keeping those not in the "family" group away from your birthday pictures.

in Content-centric Communities on RED66
Thanks Patty. The icons were made by FastIcon.com - they have a collection of very nice free and for-sale icons.

Although I'm not a member of Dogster (no pets), I think it's the perfect example of a content-centric community: people from all walks of life brought together by the simple fact that they own pets.

How do you sell your community to advertisers? What kind of demographic information do they request from you? I see that not all your ads are pet-related...

Exactly. You have to look for the n-th photo that has n or more views. 113 is a really good number... so far.

in Mozy Backup Inconsistencies on RED66

The Mozy team is still looking into it. However, I downloaded the latest version from their website (mozy-0_6_2_2-390.dmg : https://mozy.com/account/download), ran the Uninstaller included with it and re-installed Mozy.

After several attempts, having to re-create my configuration file, shutting down and restarting Mozy... it's now working fine and backing up all my data.

The website reports the latest backup was today.

I'll update the post when I hear back from the Mozy team.

Alfredo, thanks for the recommendations. I've also heard great things about Photo Mechanic, but -to use a recently heard expression- it looks like it was beaten with the ugly stick. (Then again, what's the use of a beautiful program that doesn't work?)

BTW, there was something wrong with your link, so here it goes:

Also, I did buy one planning to resell it. Might end up returning it, though.

I sent the message from a demo phone at the Apple Store. They are all activated, so you can even make call to your friends while testing the phone.

I haven't seen Colbert's review (thanks for the link), but I saw David Pogue's hilarious video on the NYT website (me lo mandó Christian).

Google.... did you see they just bought GrandCentral.com? Have you tried their service?

in Google GMail security bug shares your chat contacts on RED66
Omar, are these messages showing up on your Sent Mail folder?

Two things may be happening:

1. Someone is obtaining your password and using your Gmail account to send emails. In this case, make sure there isn't a trojan program installed on your computer... this program may be giving someone access to your computer, sending them your passwords or recording all your keystrokes. Run an anti-virus and anti-spy utility on your system.

2. Someone may be pretending to be sending emails from your account, but is actually sending them from a different server. Check the headers of one of these emails and see what servers and IPs show up.

Lastly, I do not work for Google (not yet, at least) so there's nothing I can do about your emails. Sorry.
