in Drought Ends in Hills on Manhattan Beach Confidential
Got a new home in the hill section for sale? Park it. Rent it out. Get yourself $150k in cashflow this year. Do not expect things to improve in 2009. Sure, you will also lose a million in what you could list the property for but there are no buyers anyway. This public service announcement brought to you by Jerry.

in The Foghorn is Under Construction on The Foghorn Online
All you people on here are judging a man that you have never met so don't talk bad about him when you have never met him. I am friends with Ryan Caskey and I can vouch for his character just as many others are able to. To the comments of previous, putting Ryan's name out there is very damaging even if he is found innocent. Ryan had to work hard to get his scholarship to USF and the ROTC because his family could not afford to send him to college. All Ryan ever wanted was to become an officer in the Army and retire after putting in his 20 years. Now all of that has been taken from him and his life has been essentially ruined. We are talking about a 21 year old here people who can be put away for the rest of his life. Ryan is a hardcore conservative and i am a hardcore liberal and there is no one i would rather stand behind than Ryan. Get to know the person before you destroy him from afar. Please pray for the young girls and Ryan. Let him have his day in court.

in King’s Antics Block Congressional Testimony on WMD, Torture on The Iowa Independent
Congress at 14% This is why the approval rating for Congress is at 14%.  Congressmen no longer take their jobs seriously.

King's tactics are disgraceful but are sure to set a precedent for future small-minded public "servants."

in Agriprocessors Imports Homeless Workers and Postville Pays a Price on The Iowa Independent
Another solution Has Agriprocessors tried offering an Iowa level wage, so as to attract local labor?  I see Iowa's unemployment rate is up.  Some local workers may be available if wages are in line with the nature of the work and local cost of living.  It seems like they are going to great lengths to avoid this simple solution.

in Agriprocessors Ignored Government Warnings for Years on The Iowa Independent
Where does the money go? If the SSA can't match the name of the employee with the SSN, what do they do with the money that's been turned in for that employee?  Do they send it back?  Apparently not.  Whose money would you say it rightly is?

The employer sent his matching share to the SSA knowing that the account did not really belong to that employee.  The employee had money withheld from his wages that he will never get back in benefits.  This looks a bit like a con game on the part of the Social Security Administration if they are keeping the money.

in Packer Ban Stripped from Farm Bill on The Iowa Independent
Sweet bye and bye By the time Grassley gets this enacted, I'm sure the two remaining family farmers will love him to death.

As I recall Rep Boswell also swore he'd get this packer ban enacted.  As a Whoop-De-Doo Bigshot member of the Democratic majority and member of the conference committee with Oh So Much Seniority, Experience and Ag Authority, he must be sorely disappointed in himself for failing to get this done.  I'll bet he be apologizing profusely between now and the June primary.

in Election Verification Funding ‘Redundant,’ Says Latham Spokesman on The Iowa Independent
Latham misleads us again The bill he opposes could have helped Iowa.  But Democrats control Iowa, so maybe he doesn't want to help anymore.

The bill is not redundent.  It offers states a solution to problems that HAVA created.  It is typical "clean up" legislation, that fixes errors of the original HAVA or advances HAVA in specific ways.

There is no billion dollar surplus that we can draw on.  Some states (NY) have not yet spent their original money from HAVA, but we can't get that money.

Latham has never been engaged on this issue and still seems to be ignorant after all these years.

in Boswell Battles on the Home Front as Well as in Washington on The Iowa Independent
Boswell Satisfied with Himself! This is quite the puff piece!  So Boswell is satisfied with himself and claims to have "had some very good success with different areas of conservation and energy and alternative fuels," without being asked exactly what those successes were.  This is news?

Ed Fallon is no farmer, but at least he could see that paving the road for Smithfield to take over the hog industry was not a good way to vote way back in 1996!  Now Boswell is vainly trying to undo the packer domination of the hog market that he has tolerated in the past.  Let's call him Leonard Come Lately.  Too late.

in FEC Disputes Fallon Campaign Statement on The Iowa Independent
Imaginary corruption If all you've got is what you can hypothesize, then we don't have much to worry about with Ed Fallon's being corrupted.

I don't think Ed is an expert in campaign finance, if you mean he's got legal expertise.  What he has is passion, and credibility that comes from representing his neighborhoood, rather than moving across district lines to chase after a Congressional seat like Boswell did.  But like most elected officials, he is a generalist, not an expert.

As for imagining ways to funnel money to a candidate's personal account, how about hiring them to give a speech.  Huckabee made his living while he ran for President by giving paid speeches.  He pointed out that he at least wasn't campaigning while being paid to be a Congressman!  Can Boswell say that?

in FEC Disputes Fallon Campaign Statement on The Iowa Independent
What was he thinking? He should have known this would blow up!  Look at all the money I'M for Iowa is laundering! (snark).  Look at the mansions Ed lives in! (snark)  Look at the cars he drives! (snark)  Look at the boat he owns! (snark)  Look at the vacations he takes! (snark)  Look how he has funneled that money into his campaign, putting his TV commercials on the air 24/7! (snark).  I'm glad you guys are on to him!

Now may I suggest a follow-up story on how the legislature has defended the old campaign contribution-as-bribe system by killing the public financing system Ed advocates.

Or maybe you could investigate another alternative:  getting more multi-millionaires to run so contributions become unnecessary and these "ethical gray areas" turn to black.

in Congressman Steve King’s Greatest Hits on The Iowa Independent
Feeling used? So it's all scripted for maximum impact, is it?  All he needs are some willing publicity agents.

Does he really think this is open dialogue?  Do you?

I think it's self-serving hot air, not worthy of free publicity in many cases.

in Fallon Faces Campaign Finance Questions on The Iowa Independent
Who will do the work? How's I'M for Iowa supposed to do its work if it doesn't pay anyone to do it?  What do you get when you give to a cause organization such as the Sierra Club?  You get helpers who know the ropes and the facts better than you do yourself.  You are paying their salaries!

So Ed has lately been working to re-inforce the eminent domain law that some lake builders are trying to evade.  He has experience at this stuff.  If you want to help, you could give money to I'M for Iowa.  You are giving it to Ed, you would advance your cause, and it's worth it!!!

in Fallon Faces Campaign Finance Questions on The Iowa Independent
self funder? When Ed Fallon starts self-funding his campaign, we'll know this I'M for Iowa business is just a tax dodge, a way to funnel gobs of money to Ed so he can run for Congress on the dime of some secretive Daddy Warbucks while pretending it's his own money . . .  .now how likely is that?????

If he does in fact raise a ton of money via this I'M for Iowa business (and just how likely do you think even that part is?), how is it different from elected officials who give paid speeches to the insurance brokers association or get big advances from book deals for their books that may not sell?  Ed never said all politicians have to be disinterested paupers.  He just says they shouldn't let Smithfield and Principal pay for their campaigns.

Anybody disagree?

in Sparks Already Flying in 3rd District Primary on The Iowa Independent
Let's compare voting history OK, Let's compare the voting history of Fallon and Boswell.

Ed voted for Ralph Nader once.  Nader helped get us the seat belt, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA, the Freedom of Information Act and much more.  He's an American hero.

Leonard voted for the Bank Conglomeration Act, the Screw You Bankruptcy Act, the Oil Company Tax Cut Act, the Ain't I a PATRIOT ACT, the Iraq Invasion Resolution, and the Spy on Your Overseas Email Act.  This is the Republican agenda.

So who is more loyal to Democratic party values?

in Rural Counties: Fewer Caucus Goers Per Delegate on The Iowa Independent
rural caucus goers Re-reading your post, I find this to quibble about:

"small counties weigh in disproportionately."

I think the post shows that rural caucus goers weigh in disproportionately, but it does not show rural counties are disproportionately powerful (except for population drift, as I already conceded).

See the difference?

in Rural Counties: Fewer Caucus Goers Per Delegate on The Iowa Independent
Rural impact Thanks for this careful explanation.  If I read you correctly, the rural voter's increased impact is only because fewer of our neighbors travel the several miles to the caucus.  Those of us who do arrive carry the "burden" of many stay at home Democrats.

The rural precinct still is represented at the state convention in proportion to its actual election day performance for Democrats (except for population drift, as you explain).  Urban precincts are not being cheated when they get high turnouts on caucus night.  They are just being "hyperactive".
