Thanks for you insightful commentary on this. I think its OK to be undecided and to carefully weigh the issues.

One main thing sticks out from your post, though. And that is this staement: "Both are going to leave troops in Iraq for some time." While this is true, I think it misrepresents the HUGE difference between these two candidates. McCain hasn't said that invading Iraq was a mistake and continues to assert that we are going to have a "victory" there. While Obama has said from the get go that this war is a mistake and will remove troops "as soon as safely possible." I think that is a huge difference and is important enough for me to vote for Obama.

Re: En Ra Ha! I'm so excited to watch these shorts! I'm also happy that shorts are becoming more and more available to a wide audience. Usually I only get to watch them at film festivals... it'll be nice for the genre to get some more exposure.

Re: The Film Talk - Part 47 - Milk / Doubt / Slumdog Millionaire / Frost-Nixon

Just got done listening to this show... and I'm flattered for the shout out about Memphis Calling! I'm glad that Jett enjoyed it and that it had an unforeseen impact on his life. I hope others get a chance to view it because I think its a very interesting little film and as you discussed on your show centers on an important topic: taking care of one another, even if they are strangers.

By the way, its Nole as in Noel Gallagher of Oasis or the infamous grassy knoll and I am a male.

Re: TFT 48 Preview - Gran Torino and Our Favorite Clint Eastwood Directed Films

Oh, I'm excited about this. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but having a cast that stars Brad Pitt and includes BJ Novak, Mike Myers, and Samm Levine (Freaks & Geeks) is just crazy.

Re: Un/deserving Oscars

There are a couple years where I wouldn't want to see any of the films again and a couple where I'd see a few of them again:

2000: Nothing (Erin Brockovich: wtf?)
2001: Nothing
2002: Nothing
2003: Lost in Translation, Mystic River (Love both of these; Jett no love for Mystic River?!?)
2004: Million Dollar Baby, Finding Neverland
2005: Crash
2006: Little Miss Sunshine
2007: No Counrty for Old Men, Juno
2008: Slumdog

That's nine. I like reading them because he often has insightful commentary, but I often find myself disagreeing completely with him.

Also, you're getting married, Jett?!?

Re: An Experiment in (not) Reading a Film

This is a great discussion... I wonder if TFT blog could host a poll about people's preferences regarding reading the book before or after seeing the movie (not just pertaining to the Watchman, but in general).

For me, I refuse to go back and read a book if I've already seen the film version. I've done it a handful of times and I've always felt as though the book becomes less powerful after seeing the film. I think its because after seeing the movie version I envision the images of the movie when reading. As opposed to reading a book first means I have to create my own images in my head and then seeing the film is just someone else's "version" of the images. Does that make sense?

The only problem with doing it this way is that once I find out a movie was a book first, I'll almost never watch it until I finish the book. Then I have stacks upon stacks of books from the library and I don't get to the movie until after it leaves the theater. Its quite the quagmire.

Re: Films That Everyone Knows About But Has Forgotten How Bad They Really Are Even Though They Have At Least One Thing To Commend Them #1: Purple Rain

"If this is what the ’80s were like why do I miss my childhood?"

This line totally reminds me of a great lyric by the band The Hold Steady: "The 80s alomst killed me, lets not recall it quite so fondly."
