in Films That Everyone Knows About But Has Forgotten How Bad They Really Are Even Though They Have At Least One Thing To Commend Them #1: Purple Rain on The Film Talk
"If this is what the ’80s were like why do I miss my childhood?"
This line totally reminds me of a great lyric by the band The Hold Steady: "The 80s alomst killed me, lets not recall it quite so fondly."

in An Experiment in (not) Reading a Film on The Film Talk
This is a great discussion... I wonder if TFT blog could host a poll about people's preferences regarding reading the book before or after seeing the movie (not just pertaining to the Watchman, but in general).
For me, I refuse to go back and read a book if I've already seen the film version. I've done it a handful of times and I've always felt as though the book becomes less powerful after seeing the film. I think its because after seeing the movie version I envision the images of the movie when reading. As opposed to reading a book first means I have to create my own images in my head and then seeing the film is just someone else's "version" of the images. Does that make sense?
The only problem with doing it this way is that once I find out a movie was a book first, I'll almost never watch it until I finish the book. Then I have stacks upon stacks of books from the library and I don't get to the movie until after it leaves the theater. Its quite the quagmire.

in Gene Siskel - Gone These 10 Years Now on The Film Talk
Honestly, I don't tend to agree with a lot of Ebert's reviews. I like reading them because he often has insightful commentary, but I often find myself disagreeing completely with him.
Also, you're getting married, Jett?!?

in Un/deserving Oscars on The Film Talk
There are a couple years where I wouldn't want to see any of the films again and a couple where I'd see a few of them again:
2000: Nothing (Erin Brockovich: wtf?)
2001: Nothing
2002: Nothing
2003: Lost in Translation, Mystic River (Love both of these; Jett no love for Mystic River?!?)
2004: Million Dollar Baby, Finding Neverland
2005: Crash
2006: Little Miss Sunshine
2007: No Counrty for Old Men, Juno
2008: Slumdog
That's nine. And I'll use this oppertunity to say that I don't like The Lord of the Rings. There, I said it.

in “We Will Be Cruel to the German” - Tarantino v. Kubrick on The Film Talk
I'm shocked that no one has commented on the cast of Inglourious Basters. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but having a cast that stars Brad Pitt and includes BJ Novak, Mike Myers, and Samm Levine (Freaks & Geeks) is just crazy.

I wonder if people don't know what to expect? For instance, what is BJ Novaks performance going to be like??

in William Shatner Ballet Action on The Film Talk
For months after "Has Been" came out I went around literally forcing people to listen to it. I simply wouldn't take no for an answer. Glad to hear I wasn't alone!
Also, I saw Rollins' spoken word recently and he tells a hilarious story about doing that song with Bill.

in Twitter Updates for 2009-01-30 on The Film Talk
I would love to hear the extended version of this (and other episodes). Have you guys ever thought of posting the extended versions as well as your standard running time shows?

People have suggested it before. Long time listeners know that the show is always evolving, (I think?): is it getting less rambling?? slightly more professional?? not sure. But, anyhew, it's a time thing = how much time I've got to edit/upload the shows, and all the other bits of business that goes along with it. I think the thing to do now to keep the show running and to do stuff like you suggest, (extended versions, etc.), would be for TFT to find a sponsor/advertisers, (not just ads on the site), that could cough up some cash in exchange for being mentioned in the show - this would make me more comfortable in doing more versions/work on the show as I wouldn't have to spend as much time on other gigs.

in Win A Personalized TFT DVD Commentary for Your Favorite U.S. Movie! on The Film Talk
Its not "my favorite US movie" but I'd like you guys to do a commentary on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Reason: Very simple, I'd love to hear Jett get all riled up.

Hmm...not sure what to make of that...what am I a performing monkey? "Dance monkey boy, dance!" but I understand. ;)
+ Yeah, I didn't make it through 'Eternal Sunshine' and I know Gareth loved it - so it would make for a 'unique' DVD commentary experience.

in The Film Talk - Part 47 - Milk / Doubt / Slumdog Millionaire / Frost-Nixon on The Film Talk
Just got done listening to this show... and I'm flattered for the shout out about Memphis Calling! I'm glad that Jett enjoyed it and that it had an unforeseen impact on his life. I hope others get a chance to view it because I think its a very interesting little film and as you discussed on your show centers on an important topic: taking care of one another, even if they are strangers.
By the way, its Nole as in Noel Gallagher of Oasis or the infamous grassy knoll and I am a male.

in Sundance Short Films Available for Free on Apple’s iTunes / Netflix / Xbox on The Film Talk
Thanks for sharing this. I'm so excited to watch these shorts! I'm also happy that shorts are becoming more and more available to a wide audience. Usually I only get to watch them at film festivals... it'll be nice for the genre to get some more exposure.

Yep yep - i recall that back in the early web days folks were talking bout how film 'shorts' would take off as they're the perfect length for screen viewing - not sure if that happened...

in Defending the Undecided on The Trunk
I got to your post via Gareth Higgins site. Thanks for you insightful commentary on this. I think its OK to be undecided and to carefully weigh the issues.
One main thing sticks out from your post, though. And that is this staement: "Both are going to leave troops in Iraq for some time." While this is true, I think it misrepresents the HUGE difference between these two candidates. McCain hasn't said that invading Iraq was a mistake and continues to assert that we are going to have a "victory" there. While Obama has said from the get go that this war is a mistake and will remove troops "as soon as safely possible." I think that is a huge difference and is important enough for me to vote for Obama.

+ The Lord of the Rings pictures are an odd one = would have loved to have seen what John Boorman would have done with them (think he was attached at one point to the project?)
+ they look cheap and cheesy - underpopulated and silly - I mean, they're fun pictures - but I don't know how 'watchable' they'll be int he future
