I can remember visiting one on a rare occasion when I was a kid, but he soon retired. At college, the small town I was in had a barber who came to town twice a week, it really is a manlier place. I am now going to put forth the effort to find a barber who can cut my hair, and hopefully, pull out a straight blade too!

Re: Debating Disqus - Seems Stupid

While I understand where you're coming from, and I haven't implemented it myself yet, I think Disqus is a step away from comment fragmentation. They are making a comment service with enough leverage to integrate into sites like friendfeed and social thing, thus making it easier to find some comments. Currently, if somebody comments on one of my posts outside of my blog, I have to hunt it down. With Disqus integration into other services, it makes it much easier for me. They're still young though, so I am highly curious what their next steps will be.

Re: Give Me A Sign

Fabulous post! We don't have our facial expressions to help convey meaning, and even radio can use voice inflections. All a blogger has are words, conveying anything beyond straight fact is difficult, especially when being sarcastic. I like to think I've been gifted with wording, but I also think that what I like to think is probably inaccurate according to others.

Re: 2008/01/26/online-social-networking-does-it-make-you-happy/

This seems like a clear cut case of less is more. The problem is that small businesses can't afford anyone dedicated to this task. Big business has money to burn, they'll jump right into it, but the business owner in the town of 1,000 people, the guy who can make the most use out of realizing the new trend before anyone else, can't afford it. They're already struggling to make it work in a rural area, and they simply don't have the resources. However, as time moves along, and somebody has a business that is hugely successful because they had a guy on Twitter constantly keeping a community informed about their developments, everyone else will be in a mad scramble to get up to speed. At which point something will replace Twitter.

Re: A Crash Course in Comments

I'm a BIG sharer. Disaster happens, FEMA doesn't get a call until much later, federal government gets blamed for not helping.

FEMA can't step in and help out until the state asks for their help. I remember reading reports after Katrina that FEMA actually called the LA governor and got hung up on.

Yes, a hurricane and a flood are 2 completely different disasters, but New Orleans has had THREE years. If you really want to do something, it doesn't take 3 years. Grand Forks hasn't had severe water problems this year because of all the work they did on their dikes since 1997. Fargo had problems this year because the water level in the Red River had never been that high before, but you can bet they'll plan for it now, and the work will be done this summer.

Someone should find some of the Katrina evacuees that wound up in eastern ND and stayed here, ask them what they think of the matter.

~Shawn K (@thattalldude)
