Since when is anyone, black or white, in a position to tell anyone one else what they are not? Does being a descendent of a slave equal being black? So if I am the descendent of a free man who was never a slave, does that mean I'm not black? Her logic is beyond flawed- it is totally ignorant and proves yet another fact. By writing books about his past and pointing out himself what others may have tried to use against him. So now all people can really harp on is his race- is he "black enough" and now, "is he black at all." Puh-lease. Is that all they can come up with?

Re: Counting Calories

Definitely- anytime you set a goal to lose weight and are successful you should be very proud of yourself. I don't want them to be left out of the 'fun part' of Easter but I definitely want them to learn and focus on Jesus Christ as the reason for the celebrations. My fear is that, even when they stop "believing" in the Easter Bunny (or Santa Claus) they still may not understand the connection and may still expect presents and candy. So perhaps the key is to teach them from day one in order to lessen the confusion.

Re: so…apparently everyone has lost their mind

I can honestly say that I felt nothing but anger when I saw those two Fox News videos (one attacking Barack and one attacking Black America). I often find it hard to articulate my frustrations to the parties who have control over the situation. I always want to take action but sometimes can't figure out how or where to start. And I know this happens many times in the black community... we get so mad and frustrated with the media so our first instinct is to spread the word and discuss it with our peers. But just talking about it doesn't get us far, which is why we had to take it so much farther in order to get Shaquanda Cotton released. We can debate and bicker until we are blue in the face, but the only way to spark change is to actually do something about it. The contact form was a great idea Fredric. I was just watching a show (can't remember which one) that touched on how African-Americans especially are not comfortable with mental health issues and even frown upon those who seek psychiatric help. I'm not exactly sure if the stigma has to do with our past and how our ancestors got through the rough times without drugs or therapy, or if it just seems weak in general. Bottom line is, Garry is absolutely right with his broken arm analogy- if any other physical part of our body were injured then we would immediately seek medical attention. But when our mental state is suffering, we hesitate out of fear...

P.S. There's obviously the YBP who is a young lawyer, businessman, or doctor. But then there's also the YBP who is in graduate school or a teacher. Young African-Americans who didn't go to college can even fit the profile if they are ambitious and "in the pursuit of happiness." I think it boils down to state of mind and common goals. To me the YBP mindset is about networking and seeking knowledge. The topics covered in this blog can definitely apply to a wide variety of people. And I think that anyone who pre-judges the community that we've created and the YBP communities in various cities are extremely narrow minded.

Re: Black Women Navigate Ladder To the Top

As far as climbing up the corporate ladder, definitely the opportunity as the only black woman in a smaller city would be the faster track. When we were in London there were hella overweight people and the majority of the population are smokers. They don't seem to be too concerned about their health in that respect.

Hmmm, why....well, we seem to indulge ourselves in fast foods and convenience dinners. Not taking care of your health and what you eat is simply a lazy mentality. A brief stint of research in the area tells me that, no matter the origin, people all over the world are aware of the negative connotation of the word nigger and the UK is no exception. So the word means the same, but perhaps the reason it has less sting for Black people in the UK is because they are "over" letting it get to them and have no camaraderie as a race to call up television networks in outrage. Just my observant opinion, if David McQueen is out there maybe he can shed some more light.

Re: crush on obama

I'll throw the first shoe on behalf of Michelle...that chick is stalkerific

Re: “143″ edition: tech news 6/13

It's in a Musiq Soulchild song....and I know people who used it when I was high school..

Re: Why do people hate on Tyler Perry?

Well I am of the opinion that when people hate on the product (for whatever reason) they are by the same action not giving credit where credit is due. I have seen other remarks and harsh criticisms of Perry because of his depiction of black people and the characters in his shows- this tells me that some people cannot separate the two and give a person credit for be successful while still critiquing their work.
It's happened to me before, and I think any artist has a hard time separating the efforts of their hard work from themselves. Especially when people dwell on the negative.

Also, when I think of hating, I don't think of how the critic truly feels about the other person. More times than not the hateful words are just a cover up for the critics own personal issues. What is more so my central point, is that everywhere in the media I see people talk negatively about something positive that someone else is doing. Whether it's Obama, Al Gore, or Tyler Perry, all these negative comments or reviews seem to be just opinions with egos. How about we try to give each other more pats on the back instead of carrying around so much hate.

Re: Why do people hate on Tyler Perry?

I'm thinking people just enjoy watching raunchy "dramas" like Flavor of Love/Charm School, Making the Band, and I Love New York, instead of positive comedy shows just trying to get an honest laugh.

Re: YBP Savings Tip

Thanks for referencing OneUnited.com. But as for Toccara, if that's just her personality (which I don't think it is, because like I said, I watched her on Top Model) then I'm just not a fan. But as for TV, I don't think being yourself is the goal- getting viewers to watch the show is the goal. If every host at BET just happens to be a true coon, then that's pretty convenient for BET.

Re: It’s not that entertaining … or at least shouldn’t be

I think you're right- politics and entertainment/media venues should not be overlapped. Rosie is serious, the other chick was just belligerent which is why I think Rosie was just like, I'm done with it, there's just no talking to this person.

I also think that the show in general tries to be a news-type show for housewives or women who don't normally speak up on serious issues. I decided to go natural when I was in college, after 9 years of having a relaxer. I don't know how long your hair is, but mine was a little past my shoulders and it grew out fine. The most important thing is to keep going to the hairdresser. I mostly straighten it to make it easier to comb and manage. But braids and locks are definitely not the only way to wear natural hair. I encourage you to give the natural look a try. And I agree with you about how narrow minded this white girl was. I try not to place any importance on what other people think (especially when it's founded on ignorance), but I know many professionals and lawyers feel pressure to look and dress a certain way because of their livelihood.
