in Why it's time to break out of Twitter (Scripting News) on Scripting News
I think the most important list to be on is this one:

http://retweetist.com/users

Especially now, the number of followers is meaningless. What counts is how many people think what you post is worth retweeting. Mark my words, "Retweeting is the sincerest form of flattery."

Jim "Genuine" Turner As I said on Twitter Guy, any list that is generated will be skewed now. If I have 500000 followers to your 80000 followers, I'll accidently get retweeted more than you will.

in Career Do-Over: Interview With Serial Entrepreneur Guy Kawasaki on CAREEREALISM
My college degree has been very valuable--it taught me how to think and just as important brought me in contact with people who have helped me (and I have helped) to this day. Eg, if I didn't go to Stanford, I would have never me the person who hired me at Apple, and my life would have taken a very different course.

For sure, go to college. Study what you love. You have decades to work for bozos after college.

in Alltop Search : Prototype using Greasemonkey on Martin Ruiz | My Random Walk
When I click on "here" I get a Java Script page of code.

Is it searching the headlines on the Alltop page, the bodies of the stories on the Alltop page, or the sites/blogs of the Alltop page? I don't understand what it's doing.

MartinRuiz Script now uses Google Custom Search Engine to search any specific Topic.
MartinRuiz's picture
MartinRuiz Good question... It searches the blogs on the page. However, simply searching within the stories listed would be interesting too.

As an example... suppose you're at twitter.alltop.com and search for "alltop", the following query is generated and executed using google search.

alltop (site:blog.twitter.com/ OR site:news.google.com/news OR site:getsatisfaction.com/twitter/topics OR site:www.blogger.com/profile/16135336038823520839 OR site:news.google.com/news OR site:pistachioconsulting.com/ OR site:www.buzztracker.com/category/twitter OR site:twitlinks.com/ OR site:www.twittown.com/ OR site:businessontwitter.co.uk/twitter OR site:wordpress.com/tag/twitter/ OR site:wordpress.com/tag/twitter-tools/ OR site:www.twitip.com/ OR site:twittermaven.blogspot.com/ OR site:www.twitterholics.net/)

Re: "java script page of code"

If you use Greasemonkey, your browser should attempt to install the script and not just display it.

in How to Start Speaking at Events on Chris Brogan
Here are two additional tips:

* Build a multi-media CV at Visualcv.com, so that event organizers can see you in action.

* ABS: Always be speaking. The more you speak, the more you get invited to speak, the more you speak. So accept every speaking engagement you can to get out there. Two benefits: you'll get more practice and someone will see you and invite you to speak at something else. Then upward spiral begins.

You can also get some great tips here: http://speaking.alltop.com/.

in Alltop Bacon: All Bacon, All the Time on The Food Geek
Couple of things: Alltop isn't "automated" in the sense that the feeds get added by some kind of technology. We (humans) craft it. We also don't "bookmark." We aggregate. Finally, "live" should be "life."

Thanks for the plug!

thefoodgeek You are quite welcome for the plug. I am modifying the post to more accurately reflect Alltop. I was just being lazy with my adjectives, and as we know, careless talk costs lives.

Also, I am correcting the spelling mistake. Thank you.

Dex,

We couldn't handle your approach because we have too many topics to monitor in the way that you do. Our solution is to let people hide feeds that don't cut it for them by clicking on the "x" next to their names.

To each his own. It's a big pie. We can both have more than enough to eat!

in 2008/07/16/frienderati-2/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Guys,

Frienderati.alltop.com is merely a starting point for people to find some folks to follow on Friendfeed. Think of it as our version of Tivo suggestions.

The list is sorted alphabetically by first name. We didn't put it in any kind of subjective order because we didn't need the hassle of one egomaniac wanting to know why another was ahead of him.

We compiled the list by looking at the various blog entries about the most popular people on Friendfeed. That's the algorithm. Nothing more. Sorry to disappoint you.

We display the last five entries in these people's Friendfeeds. We display nothing older than 28 days, so if Scoble stopped blogging, his feed would disappear. If he kicked back in, his feed would reappear.

I suppose you want to know the scientific foundation for 28 days. I don't think it has anything to do with menstruation. The guys at Electric Pulp picked that out of the air. Maybe it's 2x longer than any active blogger should ever be on vacation?

When it comes to stuff that I'm doing, always pick the simplest explanation. Generally speaking, I don't use any algorithms other than gut and alphabetical sorting, and I almost never participate in conspiracies.

Thanks,

Guy

Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins Guy,

I appreciate your comments - but we're not talking about conspiracies or the order of the listing.

We're talking about people who have an account on the service vs. people who are active on the service, and how you came up with the list.

It seems to us, as we discussed on the podcast, it would be more useful to have a list of folks who actually routinely comment and interact on FriendFeed, as opposed to a generic list of folks who might have recognizable names.

The purpose of Frienderati is to provides examples of people you might want to follow. It's a menu in a restaurant. You pick and orchestrate your own meal.

You can, by the way, hide feeds by clicking on the "x" should you want to return to a customized menu.
