Thanks for that Kathi! I've updated my original post with the information about the jailtime and fine. I'd imagine the delinquency of a minor charge should be the more grave one, but I know how serious Americans are about their patriotism. :-)
Hopefully she will at the least have a criminal record from this or something, so any future infractions will be seen less kindly!

However I will point out that I am specifically talking about the religion versus the people who follow it. And not out of blind prejudice, as I agreed that the "tribalist feelings" are not a good reason for it.
That some people are unable to seperate race from religion isn't really the point either - it's still hating one for something they can't change and hating the other for something they can change if they want to.

I didn't say it's a good idea to hate either religion or race, the question was which is worse. ;)

Yes, the institution, not the people. That's my point but it seems to get lost in amongst people wanting to conflate the two.
I have Christian friends and have had friends of all kinds of other religions and never had a problem with the majority of them due to religious beliefs. Generally because where I would have an issue with their church's stance on something it's not something they themselves agree with anyway.

I can completely see Tara's (above) point in that some people aren't capable of seperating the two - religion and the people who follow it - but I don't think it's true that everyone is incapable of it.

Etc.
Many people are of mixed descent, but it's not always an equal mix and not always obvious. A mix of a Japanese and Korean would still result in someone that looks Asian, and that's often enough for some people.

Societies do base some of their values on religion though in some cases the value came first and religion co-opted it to coerce people into following the religion. But the value itself is independent of religion in most instances. For example an atheist can agree that murder is bad, but that doesn't mean they're a follower of a religion that is against murder.
The distinction between hating a religion and the people who follow it is that the religion is an impersonal entity. It might be following the teachings or decrees of individuals, but a religion can't denounce certain parts of itself. An individual can choose to ignore any part of their religious beliefs that they choose. So while a religion might include not eating peanut butter on Wednesdays, an individual might choose to think that's a silly part of their religion and not follow it.

And yes, that's one reason why people hate on others, but it's not the only one. Saying that it's the only reason is an oversimplification of a very complex issue.

I can't prove he didn't create that image, no, but the burden of proof does not lie with me, it lies with those who would claim that Jesus did create the image. The claim is their's, not mine.
Same as if Jesus did appear on Earth the onus would be on him to prove that he is who he claims - blind faith is tremendously foolish.

People have changed a great deal in the last hundred years, never mind the last thousand or so. Most of us have given up the archaic beliefs that were prevalent prior to the 20th century, but some are proving harder to leave behind than others...

No, the burden of proof is on the people making the accusations - they have to prove you were under the influence of alcohol, smelling it on your breath is not proof, it merely raises suspicion. They would perform a roadside breath test and possibly (in America at least) a "field sobriety test" if you failed both of those you can still request a blood test be taken, which would come out clean if it is only cough medicine.
If it's his word against yours then the cop still has to prove his side of the case first - the presumption is of INNOCENCE, not of guilt.

However you are talking about legal proceedings that are in place for the benefit of society. The police have to be allowed to make certain assumptions based on observations so that they can maintain the rule of law.
This is very far removed from someone claiming they are Jesus Christ. Even the most religious people on the planet would ask for some kind of sign that he is who he claims to be and not just yet another crazy whackjob claiming to be Jesus.

The "benefit of the doubt" is fine, however "benefit of the doubt" implies that there is some evidence to support the claim that he is Jesus, some evidence to support that he is not. You then choose to believe the evidence that he is, over the evidence that he is not. In any event he has proven to you on some level that he is who he claims to be, even if you don't acknowledge that he has done so on a concious level.

You're also doing what it is common for the religious to do - set up specific circumstances in which it is impossible for anyone to disagree with you because you continue to pile "fact" upon "fact", such that to disagree with you would obviously be absurd.

Fortunately you don't do it very well - yes, it would be great to have someone to talk to in such a fashion. "I" have just undergone a terrible trial after being wrongly accused of many things. Someone who is fun, interesting and who can make sense and make me feel good would be great.
However, if that's all he's doing, he could just as easily be John Smith from the local video store as he could be Jesus Christ. Simply saying "hey dude, I'm Jesus!" is not proof that he is, nor is being a relatively intelligent, fun to be around kinda guy.
And if you did believe that he's Jesus and you're wrong then yes, you are going to Hell, actually. You would have been following a false Prophet, and that's a no-no.

"Jesus" would be the one claiming he is Jesus Christ, Lord and Saviour and so on. It doesn't hurt at all to listen to what he has to say. It does hurt to blindly believe what he's saying without any evidence to support it.
That's how cults get started.

You need to seriously examine your belief system, Melanie. Blind faith in things is no way to go through life and it will bite you on the ass one day, if it hasn't already. The correct position to begin from is a position of skepticisim, or at worst, of neutrality. If you are predisposed to believe in something before being presented with any confirming details then you are also predisposed to being taken advantage of by the unscrupulous of the world.

And don't forget that Christianity has had its own problems when it comes to people trying to spread it via the sword. ;-)

I think you'll find more workers happy with what their union does than there are happy with being forced onto an AWA. Maybe it's because AWAs are new, maybe not. I think it's likely they're unhappy with the fact that at least unions were looking after the worker's best interests, even if it's not in any one individuals best interest. AWAs are in businesses best interest, not workers, and there's no collective group that can do anything if people are getting screwed.

I think you'll also find that a goodly portion of AWAs get rejected by the Government's own watchdog organisation as being unfair. Which says that businesses are attempting to take advantage of their workers under the new system and that some, at least, are getting away with it.

I'm no fan of unionism but the Government's "WorkChoices" scam is certainly no better.

Who makes the decision if not the Government? They're the ones who have to change the legislation to make it happen.

The people do want gay marriage, or don't care if there's gay marriage. It's a minority that find this a major issue at this point.

Also, some homosexuals do still want children. One of the things standing in the way of adoption, for instance, is that the law doesn't allow homosexual couples to adopt in some instances I believe. Whilst it's true that many homosexuals don't want children it's certainly not true of all of them!

I'm not sure about Dicko but Mark definitely did like her at first and regardless of whether he liked her or not he was professional about it and tried to get the best performance out of her that he could.
I think Tarisai is backpedalling now to justify to herself why she got booted out. And running her mouth the way she is is certainly not going to help her situation, particularly not with the crap she's been talking about current and ex-contestants.
If she can manage to get an album recorded after her petulant behaviour, well, good for her. I'm not sure many folks are going to buy it though.

The fact that it's not on the table as a policy has more to do with various religious pressure groups than public opinion. The fact that "marriage in all but name" is part of Labor policy proves that the public is generally supportive or apathetic when it comes to the issue.
I agree that "the m-word" is much more divisive. But for every person "not up in arms about it because there's no danger pollies will enact it" there's another not up in arms because there's no chance pollies will support it. It swings both ways...

I always saw Mythbusters as the science-y fun show while Brainiac was the funny-science show. But even Brainiac occasionally rose to greater scientific value than Sleek Geeks did with their chilli eating stuff. If Brainiac had done the experiment they would at least have had three people, one for each drink!

As Spencer said, it's difficult to do science for TV, but with the Myths Revisited shows and the occasional outtakes and unaired episode, showing some of the preliminary work they did and the endless repetitions they do for certain experiments, it's pretty clear Mythbusters at least do the best they can within their 40-ish minutes a week.
And by revisiting things they get wrong? That's pretty much the essence of science! Keep poking at things until you get them right!

The funny thing is I'd imagine if you played Sleek Geeks for Adam and Jamie, without telling them what Spencer had said, they'd probably have nothing but good things to say about the show... Or would at least be polite about pointing out the flaws!

I've never met Tarisai, nor would I ever want to. So there goes that theory, too!

The only real Australians are migrants. Prior to modern migrant settlement, there was no Australia, so the people who were here before then were not actually Australian either. This landmass was probably known by other names to the Aborigines but it certainly wasn't known as Australia - that came much later.
And FYI Aborigines are not the original inhabitants of Australia either, they migrated to this landmass a very long time ago. As far as scientists have been able to determine, the land was empty when they arrived, but they are no more the original inhabitants than the folks who came much later.
And conquering the local population went on long before white settlement of Australia and continues to go on today. If you want to have a big pansy ass cry about it, at least get with the times and complain about things such as Palestine.

As for what's bugging me? Just imbeciles like you who STILL CAN'T LET IT GO! She lost, as she deserved, and is unlikely to be heard much from again. Also as she deserves. She was a spoilt little two faced brat who got her 15 minutes and can now release her CDs straight to the bargain bins for her idiot followers, such as yourself.
