I remember posing on a ladder too. I was hanging a light for my ISP, but mine was faked cause I wasn't actually filming when they took that. Your ISP show was very cool.

Your post makes a great deal of sense to me. I only took 1 drawing class ever, and it was exactly as you described. They didn't really get into technique because they wanted us to be "free to experiment". I admit that I would definitely have appreciated more fundamentals in that class.

We didn't do any performance art in that class, because it was drawing only, but we did do some video installations in other classes I took.

I think you'd have fun taking more classes :)

Re: Jackalope

I like his eye! Take that Mac lovers :) I kid... I kid. Mac's are aite, but do Mac lovers really need to have that whole unconditional love thing? My PC love is definitely conditional; mostly the if, then, else variety as opposed to the switch or else if variety.

Sometimes I like to imagine throwing my PC out the window, driving over it again and again with my car, and burning a hole in the CPU with a magnifying glass. I'm a bit distrustful of any user that doesn't have similar thoughts about their computers from time-to-time. I suspect Mac lovers do... they just don't like to talk about it as much ;) S'aite Mac lovers, I if-then-else you anyway.

Re: The cow ate my homework

WOW... that's all i can say... i love this series. Writing the script sucks I know. I was never very good at thar part either. Truthfully though, this is the fun part. The part I always hated was logging tapes ;) Boy did I hate that (unless it was for a documentary...). That horrible part aside, making movies is great fun. Some of the best memories of my entire life involve working with actors, laughing over funny takes, being out till 2 in the morning in the back of a truck driving at 15 miles per hour filming a car behind us or doing it in broad daylight and nearly causing a traffic jam, or getting some seeminly impossible effect to actually work. Good luck man. Have a blast! :)

Re: Ask Ninja

WOW!!! I find it interesting that Disney reused elements in his films, but I'm not really disappointed. Animation (be it cell or 3D) is SO time-consuming. 24 drawings for each second of film time you're watching. That's a lot of drawings. So I see no problem with the reuse. I followed the link to the rest of the screenshots, and I liked one of the comments up there about reuse in 3D animation, which is also common. In the 3D world you can animate a character and then copy parts (or all) of that animation to another character. You can even make quick changes to the copy such as elongating the movements or slowing them down or speeding them up simply by scaling the keyframes.

What is a bit surprising to me was to see Winnie the Pooh matched up with Jungle Book. The animation is the same but the characters are different. That is a bit unusual for Cell animation I would think. You still have to redraw everything for the new character. It only saves you the time of blocking out the movements and timings.

Re: Mini Taur

He looks a touch sad :( What's his story I wonder. I usually shoot on MiniDVCAM, which is sony's pro tape for their DVCAM format (can't use these on non Sony Cameras). These are 40 min tapes. It costs me almost twice as much, but the tapes have less drop outs and come in cases that seal them better from outside dust and moisture. The length isn't a problem because I never shoot more than 40 mins in one take.

I've also shot on TDKs and Sony's Premium MiniDV tapes. Both are aite, but I never shoot important stuff on those and I try to avoid using them too too much cause they dirty the heads more than the pro tapes. I've heard good things about Panasonic's tapes. There's a pseudo format war between them an Sony. DVCPro vs DVCAM. And now of course there's HDDV. My own personal drool-cam is this one: http://www.gizmag.com/go/7522/. Shoots on solid state memory and has better resolution and and much better color depth than DV or HDDV.

It's definitely true that you should avoid mixing tapes and tape brands as much as possible. It's a good idea to have the camera's heads professionally cleaned every so often too. Otherwise you'll start seeing this weird digital banding thing where parts of previous frames are visible over the current frame. I've actually found that DV camera are more sensitive to dirty heads than their analog counterparts.

Re: Which Mini DV Tape is Best?

Yeah it's largely dependent on what kinda camera you're shooting on. Reminds me of still photography in some ways in that you're not really buying a camera, you're buying a system (lens, tapes, accessories, etc.). All that has to be factored in to a video camera purchase decision.

Re: You’re so sexy when you’re minimal

Hahaha... i love all the graphic designer stereotypes here. I always felt it was over-hyped. Kubrick was talented, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I feel like his movies were liked just because he made them; often times this is the fate of a well-known artist. I read recently that Kari from Mythbusters is a sculpture artist but stopped selling her stuff because people had started buying them simply because she made them, not because they liked her art.

On the otherhand, everyone has different tastes, so maybe 2001 just isn't my cup of tea. I'll try watching it again sometime and see if my opinion of it has changed.

Re: Mecha Process

I love this one. It is crazy the influence that Scream has had... mind you there had been horror films for years and years before that, but they were usually B movies and after a bigger showing in the 80's, the genre had kinda petered out altogether... Scream essentially revived it.

It's so funny to think about it, because well... it's Scream. It's not like we're talking about some masterpiece like Citizen Kane or something here, but it was an important film.

Re: My poor Powerbook

Danng... You know (being completely honest here)... The general public has weighed in on Macs as the most reliable laptops on the market. They always top the list in PC Magazine and lots of other rating lists out there. Yet from the reports I've read of things breaking very quickly and issues with Apple service and the Apple Store, and the Apple fan boys and girls I've talked to, I've come to realize they're really no better or worse than anyone else. The difference to me is that when a Mac breaks, the users don't complain about it; they roll with the punches I guess. If anything goes wrong with a PC, anything at all, even something minor, the user throws a tantrum.

If I had to guess, Mac fan boys and girls want us to join their club, and their way of doing it sometimes is to grossly stretch the truth regarding the reliability of their products. I can't tell you the number of people I've talked to who wanted to own a Powerbook solely because they believed it would hold up better than a Toshiba, Dell, IBM (Lenovo now), or Gateway laptop. That said, Apple does make some awesome products, and there are other compelling reasons for buying them.

On a side note, I once had someone tell me that their PC-based 3D graphics software ran faster on a particular Mac under Parallels than it did on a particular PC. I proved that was impossible because all of the specs of the Mac were much much slower than the PC it was being compared to; factoring in that Parallels is a virtual machine that slows things down even more, and it was just absolutely impossible. Apple has this way of changing user perceptions (even their perception of how much time it takes to process something). It's really a credit to their marketing.

Re: My poor Powerbook

Ninja,

I know you're not. It's a formula, but what's wrong with that? I agree people expect Kevin Smith when they see a movie of his, and this film wasn't his norm. But it's endearing and entertaining.

The more major reason why Jersey Girl flopped I think (in the box office anyway) was the casting of J-Lo... she was barely in it, but her credit on the project following the failure of Gigli was a PR nightmare. Smith said that a bunch of times. I think I remember reading somewhere that he actually shot his movie first, but it was released after Gigli. I might be wrong about that. If i'm not... sucks though. Talk about bad timing.

When I first got interested in film and started trying to watch more stuff... I definitely had the filmmaker snob attitude. Everything had to be artsy and pushing the envelope or it was no good. Man did I love a good crane shot!

But film's about much more than that. It's about entertainment and eliciting an emotional response. In the artsy / edgy film movement, it's easy to lose sight of that. What's wrong with a film that's just enjoyable? ;) I miss the old-school steven spielberg popcorn movies... haha.

Honestly even the least edgy, least artsy film out there can still be solid entertainment and I have great respect for anyone who can direct a film like that. It's hard work.

Re: Tiny robot sketches human

Reminds me of that scene in the iRobot* movie where the robot draws the picture of its dream. That is ridiculous that someone would do that. It's one thing to reappropriate something and make it your own artistic work, pay respect artistically to an artist you admire, build on the work of someone who came before you, or in some way satire a popular work of art.

This is anything but a proper example of that. This person copied... blatantly copied your work with almost no changes at all, tried to pass it off as their own, and even went so far as to enter it into a contest.

I'm glad you're taking it in stride. And I really respect that. I'd probably be the same way, but I'm also glad you posted this. What this person did was definitely the wrong thing to do. But more and more I switched to shooting for the cut. I haven't done it in awhile, but that's still my preferred technique, and I sometimes use shot lists or story boards to make sure I get what I want for the editing room. The more you do it the easier it gets to cut the thing together in your head as you shoot.

I also agree with you. If you have a single camera, a mix of shooting for the cut and shooting coverage is probably best. Shoot with a plan for what you'll need and get all those shots. If there's extra time, shoot a bit of coverage for some extra options incase things don't look the way you had originally envisioned when you get to editting.

Re: Movie Exposure Lock on the Nikon D90

very cool... too bad i got a D80... lol

Re: Christoph Niemann loves his coffee

I can really relate to this Christoph guy... on behalf of coffee lovers everywhere... nicely done sir... nicely done.

Re: MythBusters’ Adam Savage and the art of extreme obsession

Adam Savage is the MAN!

Re: Happy birthday, Penguin!

wow... like... wow. them's some seriously cool cupcakes... they look too good to eat.
