in Payperpost - Why? on TechWinter
I haven't kept up with this debate, but maybe the furore was more about the transparency of it all, ie, would it always be obvious from the post that it was a "sponsored" post - someone was getting paid for it.

I wouldn't mind this per se, I would just want it made perfectly clear somewhere in the post that it wasn't entirely objective (everyone can try to be objective and get paid for it, but will they all succeed?)

Roger,

Interesting theory on how abandoned blogs can suffer from spam and thus boost the unscrupulous blogger's pingback count, and aid their ranking.

It would be difficult to manage the "dead" blogs queue - how long would you give it before you announced a blog to be defunct? A month? A year?

But I agree that all this dross can lead to a false impression, both in the number of blogs a service provider hosts (which may or may not be active) and pingback fraud - a bit like shill bidding on eBay.

Personally, I read your posts via my FireFox live bookmarks, direct from your site, so it wouldn't make a lot of difference to me!

Perhaps you'd be less likely to have your content "repurposed" by someone else (or passed off as their own) if they have to come to your site for the full story?

Dear God, what were they thinking of in the XOXO Blog?!

You're right, it is horrific, and I have to say that if I really wanted to know more about XOXO, this would instantly put me off and I'd go elsewhere. In fact, I stood it for about 10 seconds before feeling ill.

It's amazing what bad design can do to really put people off (potentially) good content. Sadly, it does nothing for their credibility!

Hey Roger, I thought Ice Hockey was Figure Skating With Clubs!

It looks like a very fast game, and would certainly be hard for a rookie fan to keep up with. And other fans wouldn't want you constantly telling someone what was going on, which would be a pain. But it looks like a fun game to watch anyway - especially when they start fighting ;-)

in Looking for notes on @media 2006? on TechWinter
Hey Roger, thanks for the plug :-)

I hope some other folks find my notes from @media useful - please leave a message at my blog if you have notes from the sessions I missed. I'm looking forward to catching up with them via the podcasts Roger mentioned.

Great even, Roger, I really enjoyed meeting everyone.

It was nice to see such a cross section of skills which people have, and I think it will be great to keep in touch. Between us, I'm sure we've probably met every sort of problem on the web going!

Put me down on the guest list for the next one :-)
Regards
Caroline
