Just last week my mom fell and broke her hip. She was in the hospital and a lot of folks were sending me public and direct messages wishing my mom well. To then see a "free marketing gift" DM amidst all of the kind thoughts was just a complete turn off. Twitter still has value, but it's fast becoming the realm of multi level marketing.

Re: Why Fake Following is Popular: Fake Popularity

AMEN! who did you talk to at Twitter to discontinue auto follow? i filled out a customer service ticket and no one has gotten to it yet. getting killed with creepy spam auto DM's

Re: Looking for Feedback

Using Safari ...works fine!

Re: Expand your horizons – finding unique voices

First an foremost, thank you for the nice mention! The one that jumps out of me is this:

"Join forces with 3 other video Bloggers and do a multi-location online event, covering one common topic"

I like that Blog.tv allows you to do this. Then you have the synergy of the different locations and all of their communities' chat questions.

Live just for the sake of live is something that gets old. Live tv with purpose, centered around an event of immediacy, driven by networked communities is the real magic.

Re: What does Wallstrip Cancelletion Mean for Internet TV?

No one ever asked if traditional television was dead when a show got cancelled. Show cancellations are a simple fact of the medium. Implicit - never openly said - in a lot of the discussion, is that the problem with tradional TV, is the number of people invloved in SOME traditional TV production. Dedication to craft and expertise brought to bear by, devoted, hard working professionals is somehow equated to waste. So it's easy to look at all the gear and staff and say "see! look at all of this bloat. We can do this with a mini-dv and a laptop." Well, not true in my estimation. One person with one camera simply can not accomplish what a crew with 20 years of experience can.

In fact - me with my camera on my shoulder doing interviews and gathering facts by myself-holding a RE-50 in my other hand (which i've done in my capacity with NBC News) - I can't accompish what a team of production people can.

A lot of the posts point out how much gear and staff it takes to do what I do in my day job. Jeff Jarvis actually asked in a different post: "Do they really need all that to shoot three minutes of obvious primetime drama? Of course, they don’t."

That simply isn't a quantifiable statement. It's like those true/false test questions. Always be wary of the absolutes. Is social media better because it generally requires less infrastructure? Of course not! (but watch, look for more infrastructure in new media as more people get involved and look to stand out) New media shines becuase I or you or anyone else can ask questions, comment and get people like Jarvis to respond directly to us. We actually have a stake in what's going on. And THAT is immesureably freakin' awesome!

The failure of traditional TV lies in its inability connect with people on a deeply personal, transactional level. That does not mean that what traditional TV does is without merit. It is simply different animal. Frankly, there is room for some production value, in some internet TV offerings, even if it means a little editing.
But to suggest that might be impolitic, especially from an old-media dinosaur ;-)

Having said all of that, folks like you, Jarvis, Congdon, Baron et al, always inspire me to think about what media is and should be. Good on ya!

I just think we should always leave room for a lot of different ideas.

Jim

Re: Small Boxes 09 - Holiday Stuff

Chris,

That was lovely! You're right about old media not going down without a fight. Imagine if limitless oil popped up in everyone's backyards. Exxon/Mobil would DEFINITELY have something to say about that. I think social media pioneers need to stay focused on what they do best - create community/belonging, facilitate discourse, and empower participation/collaboration. My network still doesn't get that. Reading cherry-picked viewer emails on TV just doesn't cut it. I commented on Amanda Congdon's new vlog the other day (as did many others), And she responded back and forth with me numerous times. This helps distill ideas down and create conversation. At the end of it, perhaps we both came away thinking about how messages are conveyed. Would Russert or Williams spend the time to do this? Never! I have tremendous respect for both of them, but that's just not how NBC is structured.

I also think we need to keep an eye on net neutrality. Despite the election of a neutrality-friendly congress, don't underestimate the power of big lobbyists and parlimentary tactics.

What I did NOT get for Christmas was a buyout offer from NBC (sigh). I guess they still like me. Alas, i must continue to toil away in the salt mines of old media, while i designing communities and getting episodes in the can for my emerging new media venture.

Here's to a prosperous 2007 for all new media pioneers!

Jim

Re: My 12 Targets for 2007

Chris,

I'd be happy to impart what I know if you ever want sit down with your dslr and FCP. That's where the text will live. In your clip bin window there's a tab (i presume your doing this on a laptop) called effects. Then click on the folder called "video generators" then a subfolder callt "text" double click on that and there is a choice called simply text. Double click on that and a text window will pop up. call me if you need more info!

How are you compressing the video?
happy new year!

Re: Happy Birthday Harold

Happy birthday buddy! I got a kick out of Stowe Boyd's post on Twitter. If there is a bright mind in this space that should be at the next VON it is her. Chris another good resource for women in video is here.

As Grayson said, shooting and trying to "report" from one of these things is very difficult. I feel like i cheated myself out of many other learning opportunities while i tracked, edited, encoded, and uploaded in the halls. But I think doing all of that was a worthwhile endeavor despite missing some great presentations.

A conference like this is WAY too big for one person to cover with a camera. This requires, dare I say it SpaceyG..., TEAM coverage.

Chris, enough can't be said about your hard work in bringing all of this together. Finding your powers and believing in yourslef.

On the plane to San Jose for VON07, I was telling my seat neighbor about why I was going to the conference. As we chatted she mentioned the book "The Secret" which apparently has to do partly with believing in your vision. I was bouyed by her assertion that I probably didn't need to buy the book. I strongly believe in what I/we are doing.

Save your money. Don't buy those books. If you need some guideposts, read Chris Brogan's blog. Nuff said.

While it's certainly not ALL about making a living. For some of us, disruptive media has disrupted our current media careers ;-), so for me, it's largely about making a living.

What I found at VON07 was that all communities and viewpoints were respected.

Re: Why Do New Media Types Like Multiples

I'm working in my multi-threaded world for a number of reasons. I'll divid them into two categories: Practical and Inspirational.

PRACTICAL

- My bill-paying job in mainstream media is currently
going through tremendous upheaval.
- The economics of being "just" a network news cameraman
don't look good in the long run.

INSPIRATIONAL

- My introduction to social media, internet TV and participatory
communities has opened my eyes to real business
opportunity.
- Managing all of these roles is at once overwhelming and truly
energizing.

It's often difficult to focus well on all of these things at the same time. In fact, I feel like I'm cheating my family of my mental prescense of late. But a tremendous inspiration to me, is all of the people in this space and the simple idea of staying focused on where I see myslef and all of us down the road. We are the new "micro media moguls". I think all of our collective hard work will pay off.

Re: Extend the Conversation

None of the "masses" care about how social media works. Identify people's passions an build a community where they can come to watch, read, hear media you've made, and upload/share their own media and ideas. Concentrate on what people want to talk, read, and hear about and give them the tools to build a place of their own. No one cares how our computers work, we just turn them on and start Twittering. We sit around and push the envelope of all of these social media tools concentrating on the tools themselves. We expect the rest of the world to share our enthusiasm. Real people read, surf, jog, fish, dance, boat, fight, love, garden, camp, decorate, knit, pray, collect, shop and do innumerable other activities that don't inherently involve keyboard input. It's their passions that bring them together. Those passions are where we should put the tools to use.

Re: Subscribe to My Blog

dude you're TOTALLY on top of the world in my google reader!!!

Re: Jetset Community Site Launches

Zadi and Steve I'm watching you guys VERY closely and learning a lot. There is a grammar to film, and it's structure, puntuation, and style are all tools that can be used to convey meaning and heighten emotion. A good visual storyteller can make an audience laugh or cry, make them feel anger or fear.

At every step of the production process, these gramatical conventions can and should be used with purpose. Lens focal length, aperture framing, lighting, and camera angle are some of the tools that empower the storyteller in the acquistion process. Dialectic montage, pacing, music, natural sound, and narration are important parts of the post-production toolkit.

With the advent of democratized, conversational media, we've entered an era where anyone can be a publisher. In this bi-directional communications construct, a new breed of audience seeks a one to one connection.

I believe traditional film storytelling tools can be applied to this new paradigm. By combining the best techniques and practices of traditional one to many, with the intimacy of one to one, or many to many conversation, new visual storytellers will engage audiences and build community. Those who understand this, I belive, will be the winners creating the most compelling content.

Re: 100 Comments- Mojo for Video

Derrick, a good visual storyteller can "paint" that regular cow purple. ;-)

Re: Declaring Your Indepdendence

Chris, I'm declaring independence from my role as simply "cameraman" for NBC News. And I've been shouting from the mountain top, to anyone who'll listen, REINVENT YOURSELF. Pioneers (like you) of new media, video blogging and other forms of online storytelling have proven that they can go out there and DO it - produce content, inspire and aggregate audience, and in some cases leverage the viewership for ad revenue.

Just being a skilled craftsperson in the media field is fast becoming a commodity. So I say to old media people - build that social media, community building skill set. To new media pioneers, ease up on the pitchfork and torch, scorched earth screeds that at times dominate the new media discourse. Take a few notes from old media dogs like me. ;-)

These type of collaborations will produce promising value propositions for content consumers and the marketers trying to reach them.

Re: New Media Types- Pay Attention to PodTech

chris, you've been telling people to up their game on the video side for some time now. I think Pod-Tech's problems are emblematic of this "anyone can do video" mindset that has driven a lot of emerging media.

True, anyone can do video. That is truly energizing and, in fact, revolutionary. But, just because anyone can to video, doesn't mean they deserve an audience. Here's my comment on Arrington's blog.

"Mike Arrington, at the spring VON conference, at your session with Robert Scoble, you said doing video was “hard”. You were half right. It’s hard when you do it RIGHT. By “right”, I mean having a working knowledge of the language of film.

I’ve got to echo the comments of Mike Butcher here. Video is nice “icing on the cake”, and when syndicated, can drive people to your site. I never really quite understood then need to SEE a 20 minute talking head. I think you can use video to tell business stories in a human compelling way. To do that though you need to have an understanding of the “grammar” or narrative style of visual storytelling.

If PodTech hopes to capitalize on producing their own content, they need to reach out to people who combine a traditional media skill set with a passion for emerging media. I’m just sayin’."

Re: Media Makers Next Steps

Firstly, thanks for the shout out!! Deb Schultz' tagline on her blog says it best. "Technology changes, humans don't" We want to connect, we want to have a voice and have impact. Some tools allow us to do that better than others. Somtimes it's useful to connect to groups with common interests, other times it's good to get out of the echo chambers.

A Twitter friend @BlondeByDesign asked me to find her a soldier she could "take care of" on trip i recently made to Afghanistan. I met Sgt. Danny Allman in Kandahar and asked him to write down his email. Simple... done. I passed on the info. to @BlondeByDesign and she's whipped up a huge campaign to send Sgt. Allman and his comrades "care packages" The outpouring has been tremendous.

THAT, to me, is a real, measurable demonstration of the value of social networking. Creating the ability for employees to have a human connection with the people who are passionate about their company is the important first step. Figuring out how to let them be human is the revolutionary requirement.

While this part of the equations seems simple, it is the one companies fear the most I suspect.

Re: Old Media, Empower Employees To Be Brand Champions!

Shaine, Texas State politics??? In fact, it's more precisely an airborne Pentagon. There is all kinds of communications capability on the aircraft, I'd suggest a google of E4B to see what is public knowledge on that front. As for a TV reporting team, you're generally looking at a crew (camera/sound), producer, and correspondent. Wire services, newspapers, magazines and radio are generally one person operations. Somtimes print folk send still photographers, but an emerging trend is to have the reporter shoot stills as well. Reporters routinely share information and help one another on non-enterprise stories. Sometimes it's a full scale death match though, but that's rare. Food is provided by Air Force staff and we pay for it.

Re: Building Relationships With Social Media Tools

thank you all for furthering the conversation! A BLOG!

Re: Embedded With the Candidates, NBC News Videoblogging the Campaign

Len, I too would run into a lot of oppostion on the home front from both of my gals! It is odd that the job description doesn't mention the video duties. Both the NBC press release link and the National Journal job description link were included in an email describing these embedded reporter jobs. The political director of NBC has read this blog post, and has not told me otherwise. There are, as the NBC press release states, video duties involved.

Re: Twitter vs. Pownce and the Value Proposition of Social Media

WOW! You certainly operate that way and I think some "A-listers" do. An outcast in one place may become A-list somewhere else. Growth only occurs when there are disparate points of view given voice. Echo chambers are useless.

Re: Our Secret Trip to Iraq With President Bush

You guys are all inspiring to me. You're absolutely right and your thoughts have been echoed on that. I think the "social" part is completely lost on some. Would you walk into a party, uninvited, and just start blathering on? Of course not! That's essentially what big companies do when they simply link-bot.

Re: Social Media and Video As Conversation Agent – Speaking at DMAW Confab

Jason, I think the key for companies is not to create a social media position or title, but rather to identify someone who understands these tools. I'll say this NBC is WELL aware of my online activity. As of this writing, they neither approve or disapprove of what I do. That is always subject to change.

Companies who identify a brand champion who understands social media will be much better positioned than those who simply try to mimic or ape what they see happening in this space.

Re: Era of Conversation – New Media Marketing Day Recap

Valeria, we'll make a Twitterer of you yet! Overall, it's wise to listen before speaking, which most of us do. I look at Twitter as this huge repository if disparate skill sets, disciplines, and knowledge.

I love to see what everybody is doing, from the mundane to the exciting. It all moves by so fast that something will catch my eye and I'll latch on to a discussion. Other times I tweet what I'm doing because it may be of interest to folks. But overall, I think it's important to listen, engage, and respond to people. Be real. Be human.

Re: Local TV Transforms – Towers and Transmitters Meet the Social Web

Joe, Washington Post does a pretty impressive job with video, and they have a good stable of video shooters on staff (yikes!) What we're building is something that wouldn't likely appeal to you anyway. It's a niche-market social network and content site. I don't think any new social network is "necessary" per se. But I do think, when executed properly, they can provide value and even promote real life activities. So while you seem to bristle at this notion, I'm energized by it.

George, I'll DM you some deets. :)

Re: Trying to Stay Relevant as the Media Sands Shift – TV Newser Summit

Michael, If you call yourself the "father of videojournalism" and tell people like me that my career is effectively over, well you're going to get called a couple of names :) besides "serial consultant" isn't too terrible.
