I have always found their pieces to be craven attempts to capitalize on human misery. Perhaps this is because, unlike the Boym partners, I do not have the ability to "distance" myself from human tragedy enough to find these objects amusing and put one on my mantle. Where are their sculptures of Auschwitz or Dachau? Maybe commemorative cans of Zyklon-B?

No. If I believed that, I would have to believe that my mother's ugly, protracted death from cancer was part of some sick twisted "plan." I find it much more comforting to believe that things just happen and we try to learn from them and help each other through them. Is there a "reason" for the horrors in Darfur beyond human evil ? Does some "god" have a plan for those who are suffering?

No. We're on our own, and we just have to help each other.

While one never masters yoga, I would like to know enough to help myself and others find balance. I would also like to master cooking, knitting and gardening so I can give pleasure, warmth and beauty.

Thank you for this. Monday was my 41st birthday and I'm having real trouble becoming "middle aged." I just don't feel like I know enough (or an emotionally mature enough) to be this old. But it's nice to remember that birthdays are special, and I am lucky to have friends who love me and remember my birthday every year, even when I'm always a few days off for theirs.
