I am really not sure if playing over 40 minutes a game continously or playing 5 games in a week during the last week tired Yao out, but it seems he lost confidence and his shooting touch as soon as TMac got injured - granted he got double or triple teamed very often. It seems he pulled back quite a bit for fearing he might get injured too? I wonder if he has the assistance of a sports psycholgist now, and if not, perhaps they should provide him one to help him to prepare better mentally.

I think I agree with some of the readers here saying that Yao should get more aggressive and attack the basket more often. At the moment, his moves are very predictable - back to the basket, pauses, fakes left or right, and then may shoot a fade-away. Other players can easily come from behind and knock the ball away from his hand. He should bulldoze his way straight to the basket and get fouled. He needs to change his strategies often.

I have said it before, both Yao and Tmac could use a sports psychologist; in fact the whole team could use one. It seems when things are going touch - if one player misses a basket, then one after another will follow and miss it somehow. It seems everyone becomes to doubt himself and loses confidence.

On another note, I just don't understand why Yao will pass up the ball instead of attacking the basket so many times. Is he afraid of been blame as selfish? I have no clue.

This team as it is now, is not going to go far. They just don't seem to have the guts. As Yao's fan, I will probably keep watching them, but I will not put too much into it, otherwise, it is just too painful!

The biggest difference in last night game was the "motivation factor" - in my opinion. They were determined not to lose another game and to stop the bleeding. What also helped were the changes in the lineups, using SF etc. I really like the way he attacked the basket.

ALthough this is only one game, and don't forget the fact that the nuggets shot pretty badly as well, it is a good start and let's hope there are a lot more to come.

As you said, Yao did pretty well and that's about it. On the otherhand, Yi played a monster game for the Bucks and scored a season-high 22 - at least this was more comforting than watching the Roxs losing another one.

If Yao is reading this - and I hope he does sometimes -- don't feel so bad about the performance of your teammates, there is only so much you could do. You should try to give your best efforts in every game - and that includes shooting the ball at every chance you can get. Don't worry about others who might call you selfish. You shoot to win for the team - this is better than being labeled " no heart" like some other players.

It is so difficult to understand what went through his (Francis's) mind. Remember when he came in and did a tremendous job by scoring 11 points
( I think) in his first game back? And now, he seems to have lost all his confidence and touch. He refuses to shoot when he has the ball, and when he does shoot, he ends up shooting airballs. Where is the sports psycologist?
They are badly in need of one.

Thank you, John, for the updates and letting us know about your surgery on your shoulder. I sympathize with you on your problem and understand how uncomfortable/painful it could be because I am having problem with mine as well - all from pushing hands (Taiji training) and tennis.
Anyhow, you deserve a little break - I don't recall you have ever taken an extended break since the beginning of your blog when you wrote the play by play account of the games.
I enjoy reading your detailed analysis of the games and hope to see you up and running again.

By the way, your voice analysis is just as good - I don't mind either method you use to bring us the commentaries. Good luck!

And - phew!!! That was a close and nerve-wrecking game! I couldn't believe Yao could've missed two FT's in a row. But, all- in- all, it was an interesting game and fun to watch especially seeing Yao bumping chest with Luis after his dunking - and of couse for the win. I would have been disappointed big time though if the Spurs tied it up and went on to win the game.

Well, I saw the game and it was tight at the end. If TMac did not come in near the end of the (4th) quarter- the game could have been lost. It seems they just lost the shooting touch for no apparent reasons.

I don't watch the coach's post-game news conference too often. But what he said at the post-game news conference seemed to me should have been said during the game when the players have just committed those errors or when they are having a practice session. He should be encouraging the players and pointing those errors out to them so that they don't repeat them. In my opinion, pointing these out at the news conference indicates that he did not want to take the responsibilities of the team's performance. I thought a coach is accountable for his team's performance on the court... no?

I would bet that Adelman told his players the same thing during timeouts, but is so frustrated that they continue to fail in executing, he felt compelled to share it with the media to apply a little more heat on them, not an uncommon technique to try to get the message through to the players. -- John

I agree with Jebb above mentioning there was chemistry missing between Yao and Tmac. They don't seem to be warm to each other from what I could see - just politely acknowledged each other. This seems to be as a result of criticism that Tmac made of Yao's comments 1-2 months ago.

I agree with Yao's saying that it was a team effort, that the other 4 teammates contributed tremendously besides he himself. Of course he meant not only the 4 but most of the other team mates as well. It will be interesting to see if he could maintain that type of intensity and stamina. I would say that it must have been quite draining on him to have played such an high-power game.

That was a very lack-lustre and boring game. It sure did not look like two dragons playing against each other. This game and the other before that could have gone either way. The only thing that saved them was they did not falter in the last quarter. Tmac has to play at this calibre ( or close to that ) every game for them to really have a chance at the play-offs.

I am also very sorry for Steve Novak - I hope it was really a simple honest mistake.

This is indeed a devastating news!! It was just like a thunderbolt. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the headline of your article. I was hoping I read it wrong. Boy, what a heartbreaking news.
I watch Houston basketball games because of Yao; now I wonder what to do.

Thinking back, when I saw Yao played so many minutes per game this season, I started to worry and wondered what would be the consequences. It really is a nightmare it ended like this.

Thank you, John, for such a great recap! Reading it was almost as exciting as watching the game on TV! Of course reading the story after the "Win" is a lot more pleasant than when watching the game which result is uncertain.

About the game itself, it was reminiscent of the last playoff games between Houston and Dallas, and between Houston and the Jazz in which the Rox just could not buy a basket. This time around, they seemed to find a way to grind out a win - by good defensive plays and great offensive rebounding.

That's a great comparison to Game 7s of the Dallas and Utah series the past few years. -- John

Understandably, he would be a bit down not having been part of this now, but he had done a lot of hard work and making this possible early in the streak. Fantastic ! Unbelievable! For a while, when they were in the 3rd quarter, I thought the streak was going to end. But the Rockets, one after another, kept pouring it in - they were determined not to give up!

I can't say enough of Rafer - and poor man, he now finally, should get the respect of the fans, and he deserves it. Afterall, he shot 8 three-pointers!

In the end though, it was the great team effort again that won the game. Without the blocking of Mutombo, the defensive plays of Battier, Hayes, the passing/assists of Tmac, the 3-pointers of Alston, the gutsy plays of Scola, Jackson, and the rest of the team, win No. 22 would not have happened.

I got back to watching basketball because of Yao. So, I am a Yao fan first and Rockets fan second. I never wished that Houston should lose because Yao is out. Yao had done his part and had sowed the seed for the momentum the Rockets are having now. He would wish his teammates to carry that momentum forward.

Like Wendy says, everything happens for a reason. After the stunning news about his injury was announced, his teammates determined that they should not falter and should carry on; everyone steps up -- and the result is the present winning streak. Now, they believe in themselves and trust each other,
they will go far in the playoffs.

Well, we cheered our heart out, and enjoyed every minute while it lasted. The emotional high must be hard to sustain. I will not be surprised if some of the players gave out a sigh of relief at the end of the game.

Now that they have proven they could be a very strong team (during the streak) with superb team effort and everyone believing in himself and in their teammates, they should regroup and focus on the playoff. They may not win every game from now on, but they should not let this single loss demoralize them.

I agree with you that Shane Battier was an unsung hero in last night games - just as he has been in almost every game. His work ethic is incredible; playing his heart out day- in and day- out. If the result of his effort isn't showing up in the scoring column, it is because he is putting his hand on the face of a jumper trying to prevent him from scoring.

Boy, I love this guy! No wonder he was on the US Olympic team.

What a let-down - another one! The Rockets were so intimidated and played so timidly as if they did not want to get hurt or upset the Suns. I was so disgusted- like you, John, I changed the channel. Although I am a Yao fan first, but I switched to the Bucks-Cavaliers game in which Yi and his fellow Bucks beat the Cavaliers and won the game. At least it was not a total loss of a lousy night.

I am not sure it is only me; but I think that after his injury, Carl Landry seems to slow down a bit and become less of a dominant force than before when they were on the 22-games winning streak. Perhaps his injury still bothers him, or he has become more cautious.

Wow, this was the game I thought -probably like many others, that the Rockets would be blown off the court! Instead like you said - they played one of the best games this season. Joking aside, I think the coaching staff and the team figured they would do better on the road than at home. Hence, the poor performance and effort. It is quite clear that they were not too concerned with having home court advantage. They would rather have more healthy players instead.

I think it seems both Yao and Tmac are very vulnerable to injury. It may be just a hopeless dream to keep the pair together and hoping to see them win the championship. I am just being practical here. It will make sense for Houston to trade Tmac for a younger less experienced but healthier player to pair with Yao next season. It is also a wise decision to get a younger backup center for Yao who can score.

No need to apologize, John. Your analysis is always fun to read and informative. But most of all, it is timely and accurate.

The game was well-played; like during the 22-games stretch, they believed in themselves and played like there's no tomorrow. They show time and time again, they can beat any teams if and when they put their minds into it and play with confidence.

The next game is touch, but if they pick up the momentum and play with confidence, they should come out victorious. Of course, a few lucky pounce here and there will not hurt.

No doubt we will need decent shootings from the three big guns Tmac, Rafer and Bobby -- as well as Battier and Scola.

I think Luther Head can turn things around - he should rush the basket more often as well as not to be too hasty in releasing the ball in his jumpshots. I had seen him contributed much more previously to lose faith in him now.

As usual, visiting this site and reading your blog were the first thing I did after the game this morning. But I was too disappointed to make any comments this morning when I read your report.

When they pulled within one point, I was elated and thought they were going to make it. But it was not going to be. Anyhow, the team actually achieved more than anyone predicted they could after Yao's injury. So, we could not fault them too much. As I wrote previously, they should find a good backup for Yao. In addition to your suggestion, ie. keeping him as a third string backup, I would suggest that due to his incredible contribution in the locker room, perhaps hire him as an assistant coach may not be a bad idea.

Anyway, thank you for all you have done and - have a good summer! I will come back here often to check up on your news stories especially on Yao's contribution to the Olympic team.

I am fine with the idea of our version of BIG3 - ie. TMAC, Yao and Artest. However, I am not too comfortable with the injury - prone nature of them. I hope at least both Yao and TMAC can play injury-free for a change this upcoming season.

This was definitely a better game, and I am very impressed with Ron Artest's play, contribution and effort.

About Josh Howard's trip on Yao, this was very low and dirty and he had an intention to injure another player. I saw Yao fell and thought he just tripped on himself. The league should do something about this - a dirty play like this should not be tolerated.

It's great to see Yao with more energy, authority and confidence last night. He looked a lot less tired. The few games before last night, he did not look energetic, and his eyes seemed to indicate that he was taking some medications, perhaps to control a cold or something. Just my observation.

I think the two most critical plays for the Rockets to secure the win were the 3-pointer by V.Wafer ( with the assist from AB) and the clean-up basket by Yao at the 11 seconds point. To hit a three at the dying seconds of the game from a rookie was phenomenal. And Yao, with all the celtic players around him, managed to grap the rebound and put it in showed his determination. No matter what, like you, I was almost 100% certain that Houston would lose that game. So, to me, it was one of the most satisfying wins. Just hope that the team could continue with that type of emotion and energy.

About the game, boy, what a night! They went from defeating a team with one of the best records one night to almost lose to another team which won only 5 times so far this year the next night. As I said a few times before, if they play like this, they are not going to get out of the first round if they get there at all. The chemistry just does not seem to be there.

I understand why Yao was upset and I actually applauded him showing his frustration by kicking the advertising board. In fact this was the first time I had ever seen him got upset and doing something like this. Bad officiating has been troubling him since he joined NBA. It is about time he showed he is human and would get frustrated with bad calls. Hopefully the officials will get the message and accord him with the same respect they give to other star players.

You will love this game - it was thrilling and nerve-wrecking. With only 7 seconds left on the clock, when Denver, which was two points behind, called a time-out, even the Rockets TV announcers Bill and Clyde agreed that the Nuggets had a better chance of winning the game.
As usual, lots of bad calls from the officials on Yao. In one particular defensive play, all Yao touched was the ball, and the official called a foul on him. He also got a technical for complaining to the official ( not sure it was on the same play). It is nice to see him stand up to the refs. more and more. I now have a concern ( sort of). When Tmac comes back which is expected soon, will Wafer play a lot less minutes? Will this interupt the momentum he is building or having now? What if Tmac plays half-heartedly and yet Wafer can not contribute as much because of less time on court? I really like the team (which is playing like a team) we have rightnow and will hate to see the return of Tmac break the flow.

That was a pretty good game - but without Yao, it just did not feel the same. But a win is a win and I applauded the effort of Ron Artest, Scola, Battier, and perhaps Wafer. I guess AB has hit a rookie-wall, as they say. Hopefully, he will come out of it soon.
