To clarify I did not mean that was the entirety of the situation. I do though think that TheJames, Stryker and many other friends of the same faith impressed something upon me to not hold my tongue. Its nothing to be defensive about whatsoever, because not only do I enjoy it but when I reference it to what I am going through its not integral to the situation. Because it explains the talk that I write on the web but by no means does it explain the tension in life. And the moments of anger that I slur out curse words resides much deeper then a few tagboard conversations.

P.S. theJames is an asshole and he is a big (). I do like the way we talk back, I just don't want it to be more then comradery.

Stryker that is funny how you say you tv sucks but you watch all those other shows. I love the simpsons and I only watch it because I want to know who Edna Krabappel (barts teacher) is hooking up with.
James Its funny you are scared about watching too much tv with tivo because I always thought the same but really that is not the case since you dont watch shitty shows that you never wanted to watch in the first place and you get so bored with non tivoed shows that you rather not watch anything at all.

Then comes NETFLIX, and I guess if all else fails there is excersise.

There cheap, very good quality, you know what you are getting, easy, and youÃre not stealing your just abiding by another countries rules. I would love to pay for the size of the music that I download now in the states because it makes more sense. I usually pay $10 for itunes but I get lesser quality then a cd, so why should I pay for the loss of quality. If the states had a site like this and albums were $6-$7 I would do it.
Until our country says we cant I will get my music this way.

I did have a link to asteroids on the home page but its better in the games section even if it doesnt fit since its java and a huge page.

This is actually the first time they went down for more then 5 minutes. And there are still kinks.
I wouldn't knock 1and1 though because while today is a big problem, there prices are unmatched with the services they give. Try to find a host that gives 2gb, ftp accounts, and ssh for around $10 a month, you can't. There customer service sucks but it still is average compared to any other C.S..

You should be able to run all the stuff you need to (Java, WP, PHP
MySQL) on either type of server, although if you want an Exchange Server it will have to be Windows.

Probably almost every hosting provider (if you're using their managed
servers) will probably already offer PHP MySQL. Some also offer Java and Exchange server as well, but those are less common, so the combination of those two requirements may narrow the field quite a bit.

As for the FCS, I don't know anything about that, but it if you're going with using their managed servers it would be best to find one that offers and supports that as well, as opposed to you having to install it. This is not only so that they can provide support and do the configuration for you, but also because I don't know of any hosting service that lets you install your own applications on their servers, especially not on Windows, since you usually have to have admin privileges to do that, and the boxes are usually shared with other customers.

If you need that kind of flexibility (which you probably do, with all the apps you want on there) you would probably need at least a dedicated server (their box but its only used for you exclusively) or a colo box (collocated - your box just hosted on their network). Either of these will be more expensive, but it sounds like you would need that kind of flexibility and control, given how much stuff you're running (unless you can find a regular hosting plan that offers all those apps).

Even with a dedicated box (their box that's exclusively used by you) they may have limits on what you can install and how much you can do. If that's the case, then you'd have to go with colo, but (as you mentioned) then you would be responsible for updates, security patches, etc.

I can do some looking into it later. Let me know if you have already looked into any hosting providers (other than 1nad1).

Yeah, I figured I need a dedicated server. I think I confused you with saying a managed server because 1and1 has dedicated managed servers.
I have looked for other dedicated servers but the problem is the costs. Others range from $200 to $450. That is just too much.

What I will do is wait for 1and1 to get back to me with the limitations of the managed server, I would imagine that you could install whatever. if I am able to do what ever I want I think I might go that route. Otherwise I will go with the root plan were I am 95% sure you can do pretty much whatever you want to it, since it is a 'root' plan and you get root access, they even put plesk on it so they have nothing to do with the box since the managed plan uses the 1and1 CP.

I sort of am leading away from the windows server because the two things I wanted from the windows server is the experience and the exchange server. Exchange isn't a problem since I pay $7 a month for it now and if I were to go the windows route then I would be paying a lot more then that. The experience would be nice but it would be nice to have the experience on the unix side of things too. And with saying that if I go with the root plan is it going to be hard for me to manage? Would you be willing to be my admin, if I let you use it? Even if I go with the managed server I think I will need your help, and I still will let you use it.

So what do you recommend? It sounds like I have already made up my mind but what plan do you think would be right for me?

No one will actually use it because it isn't pretty. Only the people that would really appreciate it would use it. And I don't think you would have a problem with that.

I think I am going to use steam for my non-imaged them for this site. I just need to incorporate a cool style switcher. Where oh where can I put it?

My fault. I totally forgot. I just copy and pasted the sidebar code from the default over to this theme not even noticing. I changed the logo so it doesn't represent no pictures but now it just...I don't know what it really means but if you click it you go away from the sign. Oh well, no matter what I think this logo is better. So for pictures I will that little logo at the top to switch back and forth, and I will keep the weather picture but other then that there shouln't be any more images, other then posted images, within the striped theme.
And No, you vote doesn't count more. ;-)

They are, sort of. I have it so a user must have a previosly accepted comment and for some reason Strykers comments get held, everytime. Maybe he is part of the blacklist. I will look into it, but if Stryker would just register then this wouldn't happen, I think.

That is one of the best features in 1.5. The comment shows for the commenter, and the comment is thrown into moderation. This totally helps with those duplicate comments that people left with the old system.

I wonder if they counted hours of actually watching TV or the shows themselves. Because I already watch 33% more TV then the average viewer because I do not watch commercials. a 30 minute show is actually 22 minutes of programing.

Nate: Good to hear from you. I think the reason why the averages don't seem right is because most of these people do more then one thing at a time. I watch a lot of TV but 80% of the time I spend on my laptop or reading. There are only a couple shows I commit my full attention to; Lost is one.

Actually if you look at it, it enlarges the botom (smaller image) then at a set point it changes to the larger picture. It would be too easy to swap the image, thats old school. The enlarging and replacing is what I want.

no need for a "yeah but" because that info is WRONG. If you enable disk use to your iPod you can just drag the files onto the disk and then when you use your iPod they're ready to go. Jon H. uses his iPod this way. I don't even think you need to use iTunes to sync the iPod if you buy music through the iTunes store. And if you have a shuffle you might have to use iTunes but you should since iTunes recompresses the songs for you on they fly when you sync.
Like Stryker said, "iTunes rocks", it really is the best music application out, for either OS.

Maybe I shouldn't say you are wrong, you just might have been mislead.

1. Of course they are going to say you need iTunes.

2. The reason there are a lot of hacks out there is because when you sync your iPod to one computer with iTunes you can't take those files and put them on another or even sync it with another.

I will check tomorrow at work. You are making me think I am wrong on this but I distinctly remember doing this around Christmas. And maybe we are both right because you do have(?) to enable disk use with iTunes.

Anyways, just another blog post that starts here and ends there.

It might be informative that before the error I recieve this:

Which makes me think something is wrong and the script not being able to find the gcc. I am looking into it now.

there isn't a directory in usr/bin named gcc or cc and the list is so long when you cd to that directory and then dir -list. I cannot either find it nor can change to it. And the code didn't work.

I actually understood it. But I have a few questions. I would rather do it the way you are do it since I most likely will only be using this at work and it seems a lot more secure since I might screw something up if I configure squid wrong or even my firewall.
So,
What configuration do you have your squid set up with? That file is a mile and a half long.
What commands do you run in ssh to forward your port? Remember I am a newbie, 3 weeks old.

And I trust you when you say it is secure but if I use my work proxy to connect via ssh then tunnel my browser through ssh aren't I using my work proxy to connect to the box through ssh? Or is that the key behind tunneling because it is a direct connection bypassing the proxy at work.

So I have it set up and I am using my proxy server as we speak. But how secure is it? Can my work see what I am doing? Or capture packets?

It's pretty fast too, and now I can surf anywhere without a dumb filter hindering my gmail access or my porn access.

The easiest way to change the header is just replace the original in the image folder. And you will not have to edit anything if the header size is the same as the original. If the size is different change the size of the header image in the header.php file.

To change the picture you need to create a new one.

Look in the images folder that is included within the theme, there is an image called header.

Change it with photoshop or whatever then save it.

Replace the newly created header with the one that is included in the theme.

Upload it and then you are done.

That is it.

360 looks pretty cool, but personally I couldn't see myself using it one bit.

Even though I said "I hope not" to your comment about everyone having a blog soon, and comparing it to email. I could see everyone using 360, just from the demo picture it looks like it will include everything a non-blogger wants in a blog.

The one thing I hope Yahoo doesn't do; include too much. Too much stuff that isn't really integrated hurts ease an flow, even Flickr is confusing sometimes because it's so feature rich. Something that made Yahoo collapse recently.

The other point I wanted to get across about Flickr. I never wanted to put all my pictures out there for everyone to see or easily search. I still really don't, BUT if I ever wanted to stop people from seeing certain pictures, I can. I can limit it to friends, family and registered members. When Avery gets a little older I plan on doing just that.

The url problem is most likely because it is too long. Change the title of the page, maybe that will work. That really is a wordpress issue. If that doesn't work disable permalinks.

If you were to get the pro account it would actually be okay to downgrade after a year because you already have the bulk of your pictures uploaded. Most importantly they just uped the limit for the free account and I would imagine they would do it again, giving you the ability to have enough bandwidth for your monthly shots at a lower resolution.

Yeah the markers will be taken care of when I remaster it with a new opener.

Quicktime sucks; you can't just tell them a certain time (? I think) because it is a progressive download no matter what delivery system. Unless they download it to their computer which is something I do not want. If they wanted it they can buy it and contribute to Gavin by doing so. Flash is the best video delivery system, by far. Not everyone has Quicktime (58%) or windows media (64%) but flash is about (94%). And the best part is people will not download it directly. Maybe we can talk about this in a different area but Flash video is the best.

It did take a week when you account for all the lost sleep.

The problem with this is, Plesk does update in packages not seperatly. I would love to update my server right now through Plesk, but I can't because if I did, php would update breaking wordpress (I think).

You said update manually. This would not have helped me at all because, the problem is the update itself, whether you do them individually or have Plesk do them one by one. If I were to update php (if that was the problem) manually I would still have broke the server and left me in a loss. Granted I would know exactly what update broke wordpress; right now I still don't know if it was php. BUT I still would not be able to uninstall the update. Something I was trying to do after the Plesk update.

To clarify, Plesk updates the server in the same manner anyone would do manually. It downloads the individual rpms and installs them, individually. So technically the problem as I see it is I rather see Plesk do its upgrade selections individually instead of rapping them up in an 'upgrade'.

So I will keep Plesk and wait till I figure out the real problem and then I will have to update all the packages manually and individually, which will take up so much time.

But, as I learned, why update when it isn't broke?

The one thing that really disappointed me, that others might have not noticed, Uncle Owen was not the same actor as E1. I could be wrong but it didn't look like him. How would it crash the Mac world?

This is old news. Apple has supposedly talked to Intel numerous times about using their chips instead of IBM PowerPCs. It was really big news before the G5 chip a little more then a year ago.

It wouldn't change anything if they did go to Intel anyways, the operating system will still be closed. So even though you have a PC and a Mac running the same chip you couldn't load OS X on that PC, or even build your own pc to run OS X.

It reminds me of all these dumb asses thinking they are going to be able to run OS X natively on a XBOX 360 because it will be running PowerPC chips.

Another note: Intel's chips are slow compared to what IBM is making right now and IBM will soon be making some extremely fast chips, just check out the XBOX 360 and PS2 specs. Their supercomputers inside.

No we tivoed both, and law and order. That is how addicted we are to TV, actually I don't watch law and order and we have the Adelphia box that will record 2 shows then we have a TiVo upstairs that recorded AI.

I fully recommend downloading Lost. I have a link to all of them via bittorent if you need to know where to get them. I would recommend watching them on your laptop too, that way you can get them in High-def.

I really don't think they are dead. Because I read an article from the writer who said it wasn't the case and how it would be an easy cop-out of a plot line to go in that direction.

MDAC. If you know why please tell me. I would even give you the money for the first sell. But even if I can't fix it by next Wednesday I am still going to release it because it does only happen on machines with Access installed and if they had a problem I would give them there money back. Another big reason, I doubt that I will sell any; pessimist. Oh, and another reason is the online version is coming out and I would imagine more people would want that instead, since it has pretty much the same feature set and its online.

I asked the new coder if he wanted to change the DB to MySQL, it would be a lot easier to sync the two and maybe that would fix the problem.

So as you can tell, the runtime error is huge, but I am not letting it stop anything; except from letting the program open :D.

I think you can tell that I do not expect to sell any. I would imagine the online version to bigger success, maybe even sell the standalone as a package since they will integrate with each other. As long as I break even I am alright with it.

My hopes is I sell 10-15, either online or standalone; that would be a huge success.

To break even I have to sell one, which I already have since I can sell it to my work.

this and it works great. The download includes a freeware version which makes simple MSIs, like the one I am using now for the demo and the paid version that has everything. I wish the free version let you launch a read-me and the application at the end but it will do for now.

Although I can't really see my computer being infected at work because I am pretty anal with updates and not downloading crap. And if I am that way I am sure Jared can't possibly have the same problem. I guess the good news is I could sell it and tell people they have a virus that is giving them problems, :D.

This puts another notch in why Microsoft sucks for me.

Can everyone reading this download the demo, install it and try to run it as many times as you can and tell me if you get an error? Dave I guess you weren't having problems.

Then please tell me what you are running, whether its windows xp or 200 or 98. and if you have Access installed or not as well.

Back to housing costs: it's all speculation though, since no-one really knows what housing prices will do. But if you say that guy is bogus and it doesn't make sense, it doesn't make sense that housing costs will continue to climb like it has.

The problem wasn't associated with Microsoft Access, but with HyperThreading support in CPU. The exact error was in the JVCL library being used in the project. To build the application yourself you have to download version 3 of JVCL library here:

Or I can upload it here for you (about 16 Mb). Fixed executable files of the program itself and of it's demo version were uploaded already. The source code is fixed a bit to work with version 3 of JVCL.

I don't really understand how hyperthreading has anything to do with it nor it having something to do with the JVC library (whatever that is) but as long as it works, which it might, not until you get back to me.

Thanks guys. I think I will just stick to what I am doing now, but go extreme. Maybe not but instead of holding back on the tech stuff I think I am going to go deeper. Like the whole FlyaKiteOSX, I should have done a full review and I never did, now I regret it. Not because I would have had the traffic but I just wish I had went that direction. No big deal.
I will just keep the name Scattered and talk about everything "I want" like I originally set out to do a long time ago.
So if you guys see me post on Golf and don't like it, F' you, I don't care not one golfer reads this blog; not that I know of anyways.

Damn, could it be a hyper threading thing if it doesn't work on an AMD at my work as well? It makes sense a little because all the work computers except on that give the error have HTed chips. But that one one computer that is an AMD just confuses me unless its because I opened the app on the HTed computer first then moved it over.

I don't know. But if you are having a problem with it on a HPed computer then the problem isn't fixed.

I don't think I built the msi to install on Windows 98. I just uploaded a new one so you can test to see if it works on 98. I didn't think anyone use 98 anymore. It Sucks.

But it's good that you guys have it so you can test this out for me, so thanks for not upgrading.

If the error was after the msi installed the software then it is the application itself that is not compatible with 98, if that is the case please tell me, because originally I thought it never worked for 98 but some people told me it did so it would be nice to know the real answer.

This is old news. Apple has supposedly talked to Intel numerous times about using their chips instead of IBM PowerPCs. It was really big news before the G5 chip a little more then a year ago.

one of my first posts was about it. I've been wanting to play around with it for a while but just haven't wanted to or haven't found the need. Although I will install Virtual PC on my mac with 98 and xp, just so I don't have to start up my pc (I guess there is no way around it). And I have to install VPC for mac on my laptop so I can play poker.

About the 98 deal. I am using that free software to create my msi and I would have to purchase the full version to create those executables that are needed. I don't think it's that big of a deal since if someone did have 98 I could just tell them how to install it manually.

I told the coder he didn't fix anything yet and hopefully he will figure it out.

Yeah, they could, but from the phones that I have seen they don't or won't work because the UI is horable. I don't really know about the iTunes/Motorola phone but I will bet that it will have a perfect UI, Apple is known for this and I don't think they will every discredit themeselves becuase they want to be one of the first. I am not an apple zealot with this at all; I just think they can accomplish something that others have tried.

There are mp3 phones out there. Just not any good ones.

The exchange server syncing that I am talking about is through the phone and it's wireless service. A computer is not needed. Every phone or pda that connects to a computer can sync with exchange one way or another. But what I am talking about is just the phone and the server nothing in between except the internet/cell provider with no other service in between.

If you are saying companies disable remote syncing through cell service data connection and not all remote syncing, how could exchange distinguish between a computer and a cell data connection?

Why would you ever want to have a computer in the middle, except for backup, if you didn't need to? I rarely(every 2 months) use a computer, and it's not for syncing it is used to download my images from my treo to my mac.

You know Palm makes the Treo right? Actually it's two companies but I won't go there. And Microsoft makes the PocketPC both compete for the market share of PDA's. After saying that Palm is so much like Apple. Making their own PDA's and OS. Oh, well.

Bill Gates is talking about it? Where did you get this little bit of info? Since MS mostly makes OS's and not devices how did he say he would come into the market? Very interesting, indeed.

I don't think it is that big of a business as you think. In a couple years everything will change with consumers needs. And I do not see this as being a staple or a necessity for MS to get into.

I could be wrong though, MS did screw up in the whole web searching arena.

Apple VP Phil Schiller said today there are no plans to sell or support Windows on an Intel-based Mac. "That doesn't preclude someone from running it on a Mac," he said. "They probably will." However, Schiller said Apple does not plan to let users run Mac OS X on PCs. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac."

Because it sounds like you can dual boot XP and OS X.

If those stats are true about the "PC" hardware market slowing way down and the gaining of Apple computers, why would they go into a slowing market. Because in their eyes they are gaining, no matter if it an OS or hardware, why would they not keep going until they hit a wall, which doesn't exist to any apple fan, sky is the limit.

When Microsoft unveiled Windows Mobile 5.0 last month they left out all gooey details about the supposedly BlackBerry-killing push email technology it was going to include. We were all wondering what the deal was (maybe it wasn't ready or something), but earlier today Steve Ballmer put an end to all of the speculation and announced their new Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0, an upgrade for Exchange 2003 Servers with Service Pack 2 which'll add support for Microsoft's new Windows Mobile Direct Push Technology. They're obviously going straight for RIM's heart with this one, and the new software will let you wirelessly push all Outlook information, including email, calendar, contacts, etc directly to a Windows Mobile-powered handheld without having to install any additional servers.

You notice the picture on that web page is the same picture on wiki'? And that website is a little wierd, it just seems like a hox page since the site does not navigate to the liger page (as much as I could tell).

Anyways, even if they did mate the two, why is ever picture the F'ing thing has strips? wouldn't some not have strips? Or no mane with strips or neither?

These are all the links I book marked last week, so there should be some interesting reads (at least I thought they were).

There are two reasons I have it:
It archives my bookmarks on my blog so if I need to find something later (if del.icio.us is down) then I can find it.
The second reason, I find these posts extremely useful. Other blogs have been doing it for a while and I get a lot of interesting links because they do. I do need to make a habit of editing the post because most links are just not of any use.

There are two things I need to change:
Recently I have been consolidating a lot of my links so some of the links above will be deleted because they aren't useful.
I need to format it different so it doesn't take up space.

Both of these will be changed by the time you read this.

Sorry I should had called them related tags rather then sub tags.

An Example:
On Del.icio.us if you have a link with more then one tag, say WP, plugins, and hack.

And if I were to select WP I would see related tags. Related tags from the example above and viewing the WP tag would be 'plugin' and 'hack'.

This would carry throughout so if I had a bunch of links tagged WP then there would be a bunch of related tags.

This is extremely easy to search for what you want because if I wanted a Wordpress plugin, the only way is to scrounge through the wordpress tags then move onto the plugins tags separately.

Nested categories? Why nested categories? It also defeats the purpose of a tag since nesting creates a hierarchy.

It would be nice though to use the already included Categories WP uses but then there is the question, why?

Synonyms would be great. And if you could include that in the admin interface so you could administer them it would be even better. That way users could use abbreviations and/or word replacements, like WP for Wordpress.

For the related tags, if you don't already use del.icio.us go to my links (found above) and click on a tag on the right then you will see the related tags in green (on the right) after.

And again. Great Plugin, I just started using it last night so I have 1.0.

I think you got my idea.

What would also be cool is to have the tags you already have, displayed on the post page so you could select them to tag your post. That way you don't have to go off of memory in deciding relevant tags for a post. Similar to how Delicious does there tags.

Text replace would be a great feature. It would *help* in synonyms and it would be great for shortnames and acronyms like you said.

I updated my tags page and I was wondering, should your tag.php file include a get sidebar function rather then just putting the related tags and archives like I have. I had no problem editing it but I would imagine a lot of users wouldn't have a clue in creating a new sidebar for the tag file nor know how to add something to the tag side bar without them adding it to the universal sidebar..

It is weird. I figured it was the plugin because I changed all my template back to the way I had them before the plugin and it still occurred and then I just deactivated the plugin and my comments were back up.

tag adder would solve the synonyms, text replace, and abbreviations.

Yeah, that is the way it works. I would use the Treo as the connection to the internet over bluetooth. The same way you do it with your PDA and Nokia.

Wouldn't the API come with the license of the OS?

Virtual PC sucks, it is so slow. I haven't played with VPC for Windows but I am sure it is a lot faster then VPC for mac and if it is why? Not because the system is faster. And why can't OS X emulate as well as VPC on a windows system? Non technical as possible since it is over my head, and I am probably wrong but, doesn't VPC on the mac have to emulate the processor because the PowerPC isn't compatible, making VPCMac just software running software were as VPCWindows doesn't emulate at all.

I guess this is a good time to figure out how VPCWindows works compared to VPCMac.

I do have an unlimited now, Cingular has a $25 unlimited that they don't really advertise and is hard to find. MediaNet I found out works as an unlimited data plan.

It is weird why they would do something like this but it says on there site:

Tethering the PalmOne Treo 650 via Bluetooth is currently not supported by Cingular Wireless. However, third party software may allow the PalmOne Treo 650 to act as a Wireless Modem. For more information and available options please visit the Palm One website at http://www.palmone.com/us/.</blockquote>

And their talking about any bluetooth connection, even hotsyncing which works out of the box.

It's either Cingular or other providers are getting lazy or they don't want people to buy a cell phone with unlimited access for exclusive internet access.

After thinking about it, wouldn't PearPc run a lot faster emulating an OS X intel release. Because it wouldn't have to emulate the PowerPC chip. I wonder why no one has talked about this yet; emulating OS Xintel. hmmm.

On another note: Apple machines will be able to dual boot to Windows. So really if you had to work in windows for a certain project there would be no point to emulating Windows under OS X, unless it is for just a few things, like online poker and what not :D.

When I went to that MS meeting last year they were showing off VPCWindows, and they were doing the same thing you are talking about, create an OS presentation. IT really is a great idea.

Yeah, I haven't looked into it yet and I am not too concerned since I probably will never use it as a modem anyways.

This might be confusing since the post seems like I unlocked the phone because I wanted DUN enables but really that isn't the case at all. I wanted the update and the notion of having a unlocked/hacked rebel phone that was in my control.

No I didn't change it at all. And I actually reinstalled WP just to make sure there wasn't anything I hacked recently that I forgot about.

The template, I don't think has anything to do with it since I can change to an older theme and it still doesn't work. But I will install the WP default theme on that dev site and see if it still breaks.

I am talking about recorded material that would be broadcast through the internet. Not broadcasted during the service. The actual recording we make, you know the one that we give out on VHS tapes, that is what would be videocast'd.

The iChat is something totally different since that is a "live" communication that will be done during service for the attendees. So I am not referring to iChat. Although that might be part of one secret.

Jared: I actually don't know what you are referring to when you way, "I'm guessing this is what Dan is referring to". If it was iChat, you got the answer above. If it was about the 'secrets', they're secrets.

Dave: Streaming? Streaming is totally different because it is streaming video and not a download. I don't know if it is possible to RSS a stream through a videocast since usually it's a file that is being downloaded, whether it be an audio file or video file. Also, the purpose of casting is an automatic download so you can listen or view later on your own time with portability.

Yeah, I remember that. But it didn't talk about AJAX, which after reading about it is very cool. But even though the browser doesn't reload the page it still refreases after a call to retreive the data.

Would an easier way of describing it be:
HTML, PHP, DHTML...: Creates a flat page, a page that needs to be reload/refreash by the browser to parse the data from the server.
AJAX: Retrieves data without a reload/refreash of a browser. All "behind the scenenes".

Behind the scenes means? Is the browser getting the data behind the scenes or...?

First you need to know that videocasting is primarily a medium to get updated video to a consumer/user. So if you had a video that needed to be sent to your users weekly, monthly or whatever videocasting would help. But remember that you are burring an older cast with a new one. So if you cast out 10 videos the 11th will bury the 1st and so on. So, again this is a medium for users to give constant NEW/updated material.

Streaming, you should do some research on how videocasting works. Because if you did you would answer your own questions. No it will not replace streaming, just because people do not want to download a training video via videocasting nor do they want the large file, like you said. But h.264 will change that file size problem. Anyways, if a business was streaming a weekly business meeting, I could see them benefiting, but if it were a training video that doesn't get replaced on a regular basis there is no need, either have a download link on the page or stream it, it doesn't matter.

Either way you have to pay for the storage of the file on a server, then the bandwith and for streaming you might have more overhead costs, like a streaming application for the server or an outside service.

Jared: I am thinking about the easiest process right now. I think the best option would be to have a scheduled uploader. There are programs out there already but could you find me one. It would have to match a certain folder on the windows system with a directory on a server. So if there were more then one file added to that directory it would upload it.
This way I can start the render before I leave and then at 7pm, or however long I figure the renders would take, it would upload the file or files automatically. Then at night I can just post the file to a WP site.

I think people would use tags, if done correctly, to navigate a site/blog because they can find exactly what they want; fast. I find myself going to a lot of blogs, and if they tag, snooping around for a little while. If I saw a categories I would just move on.

i guess you wouldn't know the 'real' benefits of tagging if you didn't use delicious or flickr (start to use flickr, I would love to see an archive of your drawings and pics from your blog).

Jared: It looks like we couldn't use the app that you wanted to do. Quicktime will not render out mpeg-2 audio. I have to buy another add on program to get it to encode it but it only runs on a mac. So it looks like I will have to transfer it to my home machine, render it then upload and post it. Still not that big of a deal since it they are just a couple clicks and nothing I have to sit and wait to do.

I am capturing it on the mac mini then I have to down sample the h.264 file on the PC. I might just look into a mpeg2 h.264 program on the pc so I don't have to capture on the mac at all but then I have to worry about the encode times.

Capturing to MPEG2 still will not change. It's not that people request it but if we need to burn a DVD I don't want to wait.

Capturing to AVI is just something that I don't see us doing, ever.
1. It takes too long to burn a DVD. Yes I could say it will be ready next week but after you start the encode someone has to be there to save the file and put the DVD in. I am NOT going to go during the week to make a couple clicks and put a blank DVD in the tray. That's dumb.
2. Drive space. We already have way to much space taken up by the MPEG2 files, this is the smallest; at the best quality you can get, unless you want to re-encode; see 1.
3. Even if I encode to AVI I still have to re-encode the AVI to H.264. So what is the point. So I can do it all on the PC? There has to be another way. Which I will look for today.

About the app.: that's fine no problem. I rather have you work on the Kiosk computers first since a couple brats are unplugging the computers from the wall to log into the guest account so they can surf the net. So, the app. isn't really that big of a deal.

about the same as an uncompressed AVI especially since the quality of the h.264 is going to be a lot lower then the MPEG2.

So 7/3 quality was not because of re-compression issues it was because of the settings I set it at.
I am not going to put full quality h.264 on the web it ends up to be around 500megs per hour.

And once again I am back to not knowing what I am going to do. Either converting the MPEG2 or capturing straight to h.264 then compressing that again because I can't capture at a lower quality or bitrate. Either way I have to convert the capture.

The options again:
1, Convert the MPEG2 to h.264 which takes 8-10 hours but still not that long to setup. But might not be able to compress on a PC (biggest problem)
2. Capture to h.264 on a mac. Compress that full quality file on a PC or MAC to a lower quality low bandwidth file for the net.

I like the option 2 since I can re-compress on a PC but I don't like taking up two systems during service to capture. Two systems means 2 computers to deal with on a Sunday night to start and stop at appropriate times. And option 1 just takes too long to convert but if I just took it home set it up Sunday night or Monday morning then the video would be up by the latest Tuesday.

I think I just convinced myself to convert the MPEG2 file since the good outweighs the bad:
Good:
1. Less stress on Sunday night capturing.
2. only one designated computer capturing.
3. NO quality lost.
Bad:
1. Have to take it home to encode.
2. Take longer to encode but still a couple click initiation.

Lets get this straight. We will NEVER capture to uncompressed AVI.

1. I am not going to convert AVI it to MPEG2 for DVDs; NEVER.
2. If the capture is solely for the video cast then I would capture to that codec. I would rather capture to h.264 at full quality and then down sample it. a) it's smaller, in case I have to move it somewhere. b) it's a lot faster to re encode. 3) No (visable) quality loss.

You might want to try the new video from last night. Not the HQ since it's down. And if you complain about the quality of last nights then you are crazy, because you are probably watching them full screen; not good. Just double click the video in the lower left window of iTunes and a new window will open.

I think I will keep it at 90kbytes per second and at 15FPS. That runs about 80megs for an hour which is descent for downloading.

If I understand what you are talking about, it's just not plausable for all plugins.
You also can't presume that you know where a function goes for every user. For your tag plugin are you going to make every user have the tag cloud as the header, or are you going to make the tagboard plugin on the top or middle of each sidebar.

I think the only way to make it really stand alone is just have a function for the user to place. Then create an admin panel, like the shoutbox plugin I use, edit the css and colors. That way instead of editing the theme files you don't have to edit the css file as well.

I could but it's still easier the way I do it. This way I don't have to worry about them changing the image or me having to write the img tag by hand.

The reason it's so easy is I use the "flickr send it" bookmarklet, then I just click "blog this" on flickr and it's done. A lot faster then finding the URL, creating the image src, and then dig around for the div class.

I think it is very clear.

How clear does it get when you can select the system you run on. I haven't seen a VPS ever ask for the server configuration.

The tech support for 1and1 sucks you have to email more then once to get any real answers out of them. Maybe this is how they can afford the cheap dedicated server plans.

Nathan: That is true, they could be running VPS on the server for them to manage some parts but that would end up being really expensive to have one license per machine.

So this speculation gets solved, what do each of you want to hear? What will convince you? I am already convinced but I guess I am gullible.

It gives a site admin the option to display an email address for all "human" traffic without giving up your email to all the bots around the web.

I didn't notice the system configuration those are good specs.

It better have a SCSI RAID array because with only 10gigs you don't know how many VPS are on that same drive(s). Performance wise I see what you saying but really how many people you think are on that one box. With only 10gigs they could have 20-40 VPS sharing the same system with you. I guess not since there are memory limitations, 4gigs (?) of ram divided by 256, so about 15 other users(including you) would be sharing that same "high performance box".

Tell me how it goes, or if you go with someone else.

But skype means we all don't have to be at the same place. We could always figure out better recordings later. I prefer to get all of us on the same podcast rather then having to meet somewhere. And it would feel more comfortable for me to be in front of a computer that I can reference if need be.

Links are added after you add links through the admin panel. Then categorized after you create 4 link categories.

What did you change in the theme? I would suggest you reinstall the theme again. Then change the header image. If you want to change anything make sure you create a backup so you can back track I think you changed so much, not knowing, and it messed everything up.

The links and other items are commented out in your sidebar file.

If you want to use some of the features delete the 1-- and --1> (replace the 1 with a !) from the sidebar file. This comments out pieces of php so when the browser sees it it wont be shown.

You will also need to make your files writable by the server to edit them through the dashboard.

Dave: I have been using AdWords for over a month without a problem and I 've had no Click throughs; 5 cents worth. I even did a search in there help system and found nothing on dormant status. It sounds like you paused your account so long that it froze your account. I wouldn't take it personal since it was most likely automatic and they have to weed out non-users somehow.

Jared: Apple is still an extremely large company so it doesn't make complete sense for you to say if they "got the break that MS did". And what tactics are you talking about. About releasing their OS for all platforms. They already tried this and they went in the toilet so I doubt they will do this again. I don't see what the big deal is anyways, yes the systems are "more expensive" but the quality is worth it. Compared to other x86 machine, high end Sony's or Alienware desktops, they are cheap. Yes, you could say the chips aren't comparable but that is why they made the switch to Intel so they would be on the same playing field. And another reason that I have stated before, if they control the hardware they can control the OS. And you very well know this is the problem with Windows and Linux; system configurations and drivers.

What does it matter anyways, if they did release it you wouldn't use it, it's too cool.

Why can't Google be compared with Apple? I know why you can't compare them to MS but what has Apple recently done that is so bad? Google's and Apple's marketing is very similar; get the devote to spread the word and package it in pretty layers.

Why are you so anti-Apple? Are you so punk rock that you don't like the dedicated people that love Apple? I could say the same thing about the nix-geeks; they too are very devoted.

Apple has these "fans" because they know what MS has to offer; which is nothing and Open-Source OSs are just too complicated.

Your #1 and #2. EXACTLY, you get both. No matter what you say. OS X can do 99% anything a *nix machine can do, are those not the most powerful machines. And it is easier then any other OS, maybe not the huge difference people say but it is friendly; friendly goes a long way.

Yes, you can do almost everything either on an apple or MS. But the user experience is completely different. One prime example, look at how drives are dealt with on windows and look at how they are dealt with on PC.

Tech support wise, I have family with PC's and macs I rarely hear any mac problems.

Google: Nothing is free. The reason why Apple or MS can't do what they do is because Google can afford to give free products away because they create the revenue through ads.

Lastly we could go on for days, like we have in the past. I have a killer PC (amd64, 1GB, raptor) and I have an iMac (2gz G5; 25% slower) and I rather use my mac. I also had a PC laptop and I don't think I will ever buy a non apple laptop again.

Sorry, that was supposed to be the last, it is getting late, but another good thing to point out is Apple is the only company I know that hasn't outsourced tech support yet. It is so nice to get someone on the other line that not only is polite but most of the time knows what they are talking about. This is huge if a non-computer user asks, "what should I buy".

How really compiles code or wants to modify the core of the OS? .001%? That .001% wouldn't use a main stream OS like OS X no matter if it allowed you to do that or not because they don't want the UI to begin with they want the CL.

I really don't care who picks up the phone. The oversees tech support people have Texan accents anyways so it really doesn't matter. But what I am talking about is service. You just don't get that with outsourced tech support no matter what level you are on. My experience is they are already rushed and when you have a communication barrier they get antsy and agitated. I get this with other companies here too, like cell phone companies. I was just generalizing when I said outsourced tech support.

My experiences with Apples Tech support has only been great. The best service I ever received was in the busiest Apple store in the nation, SF, even with that being the case the staff and genius bar was fantastic and we went there almost every day. The one day I want them to look at my old iBook the support staff was excellent and they were actually real people. I couldn't believe it is seemed as though they truly wanted to be my friend. Weird yes but it felt good.

You clearly have not looked at OS X for general use because if you had you would not think OS X was similar to windows for ease of use. [I had a huge comment but it was deleted so I am going to go through this a little rushed]. An OS is not just opening up files and running updates it's the applications that come bundled that make it what it is, and maybe the other apps that you can buy to make your day to day experience easier. OS X does everything that the average user needs out of the box MS does not. You cannot compare any photo application to iPhoto and iMovie is in a different ball game compared to W movie maker or other pay for programs. Whith that said I just thought about the price difference, if you have to buy photo album software, a movie application, a sound editing application(maybe) a decent mail application then isn'[t the price about the same. Yes, the average person could download open source apps to solve them from buying more but really we are talking about the people who can't comprehend open source.

Another thing, integration between applications in the OS is superior to Windows because in windows it's non existent. In OS X everything is tied together very neatly and effectively.

Then look at productivity, 2 things come to mind that Vista is clearly ripping off from Tiger. Spotlight and Smart folders. Two things that make Tiger wonderful.

You should really invest some time in using Tiger before you make judgement of it's ease of use because the iMac at the bridge for sound is not a good example.

Dave: the beauty of google ads is the reporting. You should really invest some time in getting your website to report what keywords are bringing in the clicks and then you can track what they do after they come to your site. Just because you get clicks and you don't sell anything doesn't mean it's Google fault, you customize who sees your ad and you track the behavior of the customer.

It would help you a lot to find out what a customer does when they get to your site. Do they look and leave? Or to they go to your other pages and look at prices or specifics before they decide not to buy your product.

If you are spending that much in Google ads you should really invest in getting the marketing and customer behavior down. Because you could be hitting all the right people and then they get to your site and see that they don't like your product or the "feel" or look of your site.

Website presentation is huge.

I am not a marketing guy but I do know you need to know what your potential customers want and look at/for.

I agree with you. Outsourcing is NOT as big as the media has made it out to be in the past. I read a Wired article stating we insource more then we outsource, by a lot. And from my previous posts on this, I strongly agree with giving a better economy to countries who need it.

MS was sued for more then just office integration with the browser; come one. And if so why don't they create something that developers, when they write their software, have the ability to integrate between each other. Apple does.

I had the demo two years ago and I didn't see smart folders. And if you saw it two years ago why have they taken so long. That is something that I like about OX X they contintly improve it, yes, it is marketing so they could get upgraders $ every year or two but look at xp it's out of date.

Step 1: Allow every domain owner to get a .xxx domain that corresponds with there current domain. i.e. Playboydotcom would be allowed to get playboy.xxx before anyone else. Actually it would be a requirement for any 17+ content.

Step 2: Sites can have content on there original site but not any content deemed inappropriate for minors. i.e. when you go to one of those sites you have to claim your over a certain age by hitting a yes button, they then should be redirected to the .xxx domain.

Step 3: ICANN could just block sites if they don't abide.

I don't think this is ging to ever happen but it should.

I don't know why it drops down so I haven't an idea in fixing it. But you can have it open all the time by modding the plugin file, I forget the code to delete but if you look at it you should find it no problem.

I am from Richmond, Virginia and I was one of the early birds having gotten into line for the iBook sale about 4:15'ish. I was about 150th in line. There were 2 police officers there.

A camaraderie formed with the Ã¢â‚¬Å“groupÃ¢â‚¬? as the minutes ticked by, we joked, sang, played music and attempted to start the Ã¢â‚¬Å“waveÃ¢â‚¬? on a few occasions. Things went great until people started arriving around dawn. People attempted to cut into line or not get in line at all. When you get to know your neighbor and have been waiting, this started ticking people off. Many in our group were telling them to Ã¢â‚¬Å“get to the back of the line!Ã¢â‚¬? As the minutes went by more and more people came (total estimates of all individuals there were actually about 5 - 6,000) and didn't want to get to the back of the line.

The police attempted to control them and tell them they had to get in line but they ignored them Ã¢â‚¬â€œ there were only 5 police officers when the gates opened. When the gates opened at 7:00, all of the people that were not in line started to rush the gates. If you were there, you saw it and could see that once the people that weren't in line started rushing the gates, the people that were in line started running too as they had been in line for hours. I saw the scene and said Ã¢â‚¬Å“this isn't worth it!Ã¢â‚¬? I left.

I got a call a few minutes later on my cell phone from my friend Shirley asking me where I was. She said she had been shoved to the ground, lost her shoes, had no skin on her knees, was at the bottom of a pile at one point, but got back up and kept going. (I found out later in the day that she did in fact get an iBook.) At some point after the crowd reached the building, she told me that tickets were handed out. I am absolutely amazed that they didn't have the foresight to hand these tickets out to those of us in line as the line formed. Had they done that, a lot of what happened could have been avoided. They could have been told that the tickets were gone and to go home.

This morning watching the news I saw that some were already on eBay and fetching $285+. Amazing. I have to say that I question the intelligence of not only the Henrico Board, but the Henrico Police Department. To say that Ã¢â‚¬Å“they didn't expect that many people,Ã¢â‚¬? to me is dumbfounding. Just think Ã¢â‚¬â€œ had the general public been able to participate this would have been even worse. I'm just amazed. What morons did we vote in that are supposed to be educating and setting the example to our children? Amazingly stupid apparently! However we all looked a bit ridiculous ourselves - mob mentality.

I am only for it because "most" nations of the world don't want there kids to see hard core porn. And it is law (US only maybe) to have an over 18 disclaimer, so if they have that they might as well do redirect to another domain.

There are already requirements for domains. .EDU for example, even though the requirement is opposite to what I wrote above.

You know I love open source but I am not too enthused with big production software like video apps. Granted I haven't used any; 'cause I haven't heard any good ones but it seems they might be a little buggy since all the real innovations are being sold and if paid for apps aren't stable I'm scared to think what OS has done. It's very rare that OS apps are btter then Paid-for-apps.

Don't get me wrong, I love open source. If you want to point me out to something go right ahead. BEst of all it might just work on a mac so I wouldn't have to take 3 hours installing Linux; trying to get all the drivers to run properly before I test out something I wont like.

You can't watch DVD's on Linux; Legally.

I've told you that. That blacklist plugin works perfect for me. I don't even remember the last time I had to moderate spam, actually since that plugin I haven't. I just keep it updated and have it delete the spam rather then send it in moderation. I hate moderation, if the plugin works then there is no need and I don't know if this is true with the blacklist plugin but the moderated spam still gets saved in your db so WP can reference it later, maybe this is only if you mark it as spam. Anyways, I rather not have my db full of spam whether it's for prevention or not.

stole the GUI from Apple to create Windows but MS did create it right after the Lisa dev and the two OSs resemble the same thing.
I also want to stat that my references are only what I read on the internet (good sources and not the zealots), podcast conferences, and recently Pirates of Silicon Valley.
I really recommend the movie. It shows the craziness of Jobs and the corrupt nature (for the lack of a better term) of Gates. Woz' even said it was right on.

I think the box froze because I couldn't log in but that doesn't mean anything. And I looked in my logs and I couldn't find anything that failed or was unusual at that particular time but that too, doesn't mean anything. Because I could have been looking for the wrong thing or I waited to long and the logs were overwritten, but I doubt it that.

The cron job is a good idea, you know what it would be? I will look but if you know it would help.

Yeah, ssh didn't work so I don't know if cron would work either. Hopefully it won't happen again.

And no I didn't have to contact the host because I can reset it through the 1and1 control panel. I also have access to a recovery console but as you know I didn't need it.

You will need to read the directions. You must install Gallery 1 or 2 first. If you have gallery 2 you will need to wait until i realease an update since the Gallery team has changed thier scheme.

No, I trackbacked and he added it after the fact. I already talked to him through email and all is good. I don't really want to "require" someone to give credit, especially since they could just take it out no matter.

I just don't like when they deliberately take your name out of the theme and leave everything else the same, at least change the colors and make it your own before you do that.

Another reason I wasn't happy with this particular blog is he got a lot of traffic from other people linking to him about this story; Dvorak for one.

Oh no. I would love to see Google buy AOL; they could do some great things to a service that desperately needs it. I still believe AOL is great for certain people, namely the people that only can handle a mac but Google could easily change that.

I would also love to see them buy Yahoo! and/or release a national internet service.

But if this does happen I see a lot of good things and a lot of bad. I would imagine Google changing the internet for the better but there will be people in the future who will hate Google that earlier loved them because know they would be a monopoly. And worst case scenario it might create stagnation in innovation similar to ms.

The PocketPC UI does suck and is not just opinion because I have proof. 80% of the 100 physicians I regularly work with have PDA's and it's roughly split down the middle as to what devices OS they use. With that said, I rarely see Palms being a problem. And I continually see myself helping those poor soles that bought a PPC. User error rarely happens with a Palm OS and if it does then it is easy for the user to change the problem. With the PPC nothing is instinctive, to the average person.

UI isn't just layout but intuition. If finding/completing what you want to do with the OS isn't instinctive then it has a horrible UI. For example, a lot of people don't know how to actually completely close a program on a PPC, rather they just reset it when it gets slow. You say there are programs to help but something so integral should be built in.

PDAs are useless if they cannot connect to the internet; otherwise they are pocket planners and you might as well get a mole skin book.

Oh, and you perception of the "average" person is too generous.

The file system: Having to find a document or app is not intuitive. On the palm it auto finds everything. Then you have a program that spreads out on the system as well, uninstalling is a bear if done incorrectly.
Programs: Why do you have to find them? The point of a PDA is to run apps, so why aren't the shortcuts on the main screen? The main screen has a few then the start dropdown has some more then you have to go to another screen to get the complete list.
Navigation: pretty much said it above. So much in so many places.

Separate yourself a little bit from evaluating products. Just because you get it doesn't mean its right.

Nathan: Yeah, and if you were to multitask that much who wants to worry about multiple programs open at the same time.

Paragraph 2: The Palm or at least the Treo does play music and run other apps at the same time. The Treo does do Wifi with a hack and I rather have internet everywhere rather then just a hotspot (you called it WiFi) at starbucks. Who f'ing tunnels there traffic like you? Get a proxy.

1: yes it does. Because the average person can't learn new tricks.

2: No you have to buy a sd wifi card but it's still WAY easier, even with a hack, then figuring out the pairing of the two devices through bluetooth to share the data connection from your cell phone.

What are you doing that you need to have everything encrypted? It seems that you not only overestimate the average person but those so called hackers out there and how many there actually are.

So I guess we differ.

I like one phone that does everything, is relatively small, and intuitive so if i want to dumb down.

You like a complicated setup with more then one device and each device being larger then my one device. With multiple internet connection options that might take you longer to setup then just using an all in one device.

I'm glad we got this straightened out.

There is no configuration necessary to browse the web on a Smartphone and if you use gmail or any other web based email provider then there is no configuration for email either.

Bluetooth pairing is extremely complicated and instructions on how to pair two specific devices are rare, where as finding how to put pop settings into an email client is found at every email provider. Exchange: is easier to setup then pop or imap, especially since most companies who use exchange will have an IT guy setup the device anyways.

Martha: You are right...compared to your razr. But we started the conversation on the OS, not the devices or the hot key buttons on the devices like Jared brought up to cover up the crappy UI of the PPC.

Encryption: maybe you should post on this because I really don't care about that much encryption...because I don't have to, nor am I paranoid.
