Yes, sometimes people need to meet behind closed doors to discuss their own unique issues without having the deliberative aspects of the conversation published everywhere, but only by really participating with all the participants of the market can a real understanding be gained relative to Social Media.

I like the way Andy set it up though, as a business he can run and do so manageably by organizing a Web site and meetings for corporate blogging organizations - very focused and very profitable. We had hoped to do something similar, but never executed on it...

Re: 2008/05/23/social-media-marketing/

Thanks Jackie - was great to finally meet you and get to know you a bit better

You hit on one of the reasons I formed Social Media Club - trying to make sure the poseurs dont screw it up for everyone, especially the clients. When I started my first interactive agency back in late 1994 and we started doing big web projects in 1995 I was amazed at how some companies were charging $100k for a simple 10 page web site - they really exploited the market and sometimes didnt even deliver a final product.

Today though, we have greater visibility into the world as a result of this very tool, and by sticking together, sharing what we do know and using the very methods we espouse, we can ensure that the folks that don't get it eventually do, or they dont get the work...

Re: 2008/08/08/is-it-spamming-or-savvy-marketing/

Lets also talk about the amount of money some people force companies to waste in defence of trying to do the right thing. Do you have any idea of how many people I dont know who tweet at me to get my attention? I am not even well known really, and I have people attacking me for no reason (they are blocked but show up in Summize which is what I rely on).

I know Khris fairly well and can vouch for the fact that he is one the nicest, most sincere people I have ever met in the technology field. He is pro open standards and against spam. The wild thing that I noticed in reading this thread is that no one pointed out that Khris was not trying to sell anything, he was trying to give away something - he is trying to help you and you got upset. Yes he is promoting his service, of course. What about all of the Firefox advocates who tell users of other browsers they need to switch, are they spamming?

I don't think it is aggressive at all, but rather smart. It is also the matter of human beings talking to other human beings, not bots responding automatically. The humans in the company responded in a human way to acknowledge Scott's request... the company did not spam him again - it publicly commented to the person talking about them publicly.

These are the opportunities we have to figure out where the line is and help educate more people about what is generally acceptable and what is not. That said, what is welcome by one person is not welcome by another, and that is ok, and that is how it should be. So Scott, you are entitled to your opinion, it just seems that most other people disagree...

Re: 2008/11/12/renaming-government-2/

I think after reading through all of these I like WeGov best

As I said the other day, the big difference of this next generation of technology enabled government is that it takes our standard representative government model (FOR the people) and turns it into a more scalable participatory model (WITH the people).

The only other thing that comes to mind is some variant of DITG (do it together government) but that is awkward...

Re: Marketing is NOT Social Media-Social Media is NOT Marketing

You know I love you brother, but I have some challenges with some of what you wrote here - mostly good, but a few key things where I differ.

Saying Social Media is the tools is like saying carpentry is the tools - and carpentry is no more the hammer then social media is the video camera. Yes they are essential, important and deeply intertwined, but this fundamental disagreement changes the perspective of the article I think in a dramatic way.

During a Google presentation today from the former CMO of YouTube Suzie Reider, I was struck by one slide in particular, where she posited that video on YouTube "was both social, and media". My interpretation, which I hinted at in my blog post today was that this meant it was personal and intimate, while also being broadcast and mass market.

Once again, I am coming back to rest upon the question of INTENTION - if the intention of the person using the tools is to use the tools to separate people from their pocketbooks, its just, as you said, 'bad marketing'. If instead, people understand how and why things have changed - that it isnt an us vs. them world, but rather one in which we are all in it together. If marketers understand that they can find great personal fulfillment, professional effectiveness and true/authentic social media engagement by bringing the intention of being of service to people in their 'market', it can and it will be quite a different experience all around.

This again goes back to understanding what Doc Searls talks about regarding "the because effect" - as many people I spoke with here at the Search Insider Summit discussed today, its not about the transaction, its about the experience. When the experience is genuine, not fabricated - When the experience is about an exchange of value, entertainment or creation - When the experience is a result of people being of service, organizations may make money BECAUSE of it, but not necessarily from it directly.

Good spark my brother - lots more to discuss you media maven mad man...

Re: How to Use Friendfeed as a Collaborative Business Tool

Unfortunately not everyone's company can provide real IT support for all the different team's needs... that is another form of a cloud computing strategy, expecting the average IT dept to properly support a team of people who are used to collaborating using 2.0 tools - wish it was the case, but almost all big companies I know (and I know a few) do not properly support their various constituencies

Most importantly, this sort of usage is great for a smaller company with no IT department, or a non-profit, or any ad-hoc group. For Social Media Club, we replaced our mailing list with the Friend Feed Room. Just yesterday I created a private room for a research project my agency is doing.

This option is also great for a project extranet - easier to share info in then a wiki, especially when those tools are behind the firewall and the people you need to share with are outside of one.

The key to any IT based collaboration effort is to get everyone to agree to use the same place for storing their stuff and connecting with each other. No technology is a single silver bullet for the people challenges we face in group collaboration, but when you install the FF bookmarklet in your browser, it sure makes it a whole lot easier for people to see how simple it can be...

Re: More asshat posts in 2008 coming…

Ah, the big dilemma... influence over reach - would rather have influence any day, but in this celebrity driven pop culture world of ours, I am afraid to say we need a bit of both. It takes quite a bit of work to be successful in such a way, but I am with you on this one Robert - rather be the nice guy trying to help people with insights and friendly advice than the jerk trying to get attention any day. If that means a smaller but smarter group of participants in the conversation (formerly known as audience), then so be it.

Looking forward to seeing what you are doing next, seems like it might be a lot of fun... I hope you help them revive the brand and take it to a whole new dimension!

Re: We’re in a death spiral

I want to affirm the comments made by a few people above - the economy is largely based on models that are divorced from every day life. In short, it is largely a construct of our beliefs about it - whether it is growing or shrinking is also affected in such a way. The more we contribute to the challenges we are facing with inflammatory and sensationalist titles such as this, the worse it is going to be for everyone.

I dont mean to ignore the reality, I just mean dont exacerbate it. The great depression, and from what I understand the failure of WaMu was in some measure a result of a 'run on the banks' - what does this mean really? it means that people freaked out and thought they needed to horde cash in their matresses. By reducing the amount of cash the banks had on hand, it changed their leverage - how much they had outstanding in loans against the deposits. So when the deposits dropped below a certain point, it required them to file bankruptcy even though they weren't 'out of cash' per se.

The point is, what it is, is up to us. Real leadership in a time like this requires calm, rational thought.

Re: The New FriendFeed Rooms

Thanks Ayelet - there is so much more they can do with this - I have a feeling its only the beginning. To see how much they have built in already is amazing. This is really a great team working hard to support the users needs... Cant believe it took me 3 weeks of resisting it before I converted, but the Rooms feature definitely put it over the top.

Re: Chris Heuer – 3 Tags

wasn't even drunk yet, but a full bottle of wine in - very fun - good to meet you Andrea
