Put a handlebar and downtube on it and it'll look just like a Segway. Of course my Asus 1000H probably won't like being trod upon.

I think this be more sour grapes from Intel. Anyway, I thought Liliputing had said months ago that there was a high return rate for Linux netbooks. Maybe someone should ask Intel to differentiate the return rate difference between Windows and Linux netbooks.

This is probably some conspiracy by both Micro$oft and Intel to kill sales of the netbooks which have turned into a Frankenstein's (or is that Al Franken?) low margin monster for them.
Get something like PuPeee fully functional on my Asus 1000H and I'd be happy. All I want my Netbook for is email and web browsing when I am on the road.
Give it a user-friendly desktop interface and no geek-speak Linux knowledge and most users would be happy.
I tried the latest PuPeee distribution and have it running from a 2GB thumb drive. The whole package takes up less than 110 MB on the drive.

1. OS-X available pre-loaded on a Netbook? Not as long as Steve Jobs is still breathing. Apple doesn't want to cut into their fat profit margins.
2. Regarding my post yesterday. I have nothing against Ubuntu on a Netbook. I had it running on my 1000H from an extrernal CD drive using the method posted here a couple of months ago. It worked just fine for network browsing and email. I found the user desktop to be OK.

in How to quickly switch Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface on and off on Liliputing
"In order to install the package, make sure the Ubuntu Netbook Remix repositories are in your repository list, and then install desktop-switcher either using apt-get or the Synaptic package manager."
What does the above sentence even mean? This is why XP (and the upcoming Win 7 which works great on my Asus 1000H) will rule the netbook market. I believe that most netbook users want a simple to use portable device.

Yes and no. There is diversity among current and potential netbook users: techie/hobbyists, business travelers, college students, and many others. What is attractive or even necessary for one kind of user is unattractive or simply a low priority for others. For instance, a long-life battery is desirable but unimportant for me, while lightness in weight and smallness in price matter a great deal. I would be happy with linux, that is, a seller-modified and installed distribution that doesn't demand much of me. That doesn't mean that I don't see others being happy to learn linux from A to Z.

It says that you make sure you can download it, and then dl/install in a single step. As simple as that, except it tells you how to fix it if things don't immediately work.
Let's see the "hard" terms:
"repository list": The sites where you get updates. It won't force you to use ubuntu.com, like microsoft forces you to use microsoft.com.
"Ubuntu Netbook Remix repositories": If you don't use Remix but regular ubuntu you may have to add it.
"Synaptic package manager": Like Add/Remove programs in the XP control panel.
"apt-get": The same for the command line (so you can create automated scripts)
With the exception of adding the repository it is really much simpler than Windows. And adding the repository is like installing an XP program in Win98. Only you don't have to do as much hacking.

The short answer:
*) One edit of your /etc/apt/sources.list file - add two lines.
*) Update the package management database - one command.
*) Install the remix-package - one command.
*) Optionally, install the desktop switcher - one command.
*) Restart the display - one command.
Note: You don't even have to re-boot the machine, just keep on using it.

in Microsoft to offer crippled version of Windows 7 for netbooks on Liliputing
I'll switch to Ubuntu on my 1000H before I have to buy the Windows 7 Premium edition which will no doubt have a Premium price.
Windows 7 Ultimate Beta and Ubuntu both work just fine on it especially since I use the 1000H only for email and Web browsing when I am on the road. iI can also use the XP Home that it came with until the 1000H breaks.

Actually, the "premium" tag is only being kept (quoting from Gizmodo) "because in market testing, Vista users thought they were getting downgraded, going from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home."
So really, swapping out XP Home to W7 Home (premium) shouldn't be a big price hike on netbooks. Will keep Linux in the picture tho.

That is crazy if it takes 12 hours to charge up. It takes 90 minutes or less to recharge the 6-cell battery on my 1000H. I don't think it will affect the life of the charger though.
Just as BoloMKXXVIII said, buy another battery. Unless you already have all the spare ones.

The price says "IVA inclusa" which means it inludes the 20% VAT tax in Italy. So the price is about 310 Euro without the tax which is about $US 410. That seems reasonable, a black B202 with XP here in the USA runs about $320 before any sales tax or shipping.

in How to install Eeebuntu with a usb flash drive on Liliputing
I burned an ISO image of the nbr-version. It works just fine if you boot from the CD on my 1000H/XP that is also dual booted with Windows 7 on the D: partition.
But if you try the 2nd option in the startup window to install it in Windows as an application (under Windows 7) it does install but doesn't run and there is nothing in the Ubuntu directory that will run it.
Will it install under Windows 7 (dual-booted with XP Home).
I have Windows 7 running like a champ with all the warning messages gone.

in Will Microsoft release a netbook-specific version of Windows 7? on Liliputing
I have Win 7 dual booted with the native XP on an Asus 1000H. A few hiccups but it runs. I installled all the drivers/toolbar apps that would load under Win 7 from the Asus recovery DVD and the latest WLAN drivers from Ralink . There is a free version of Kaspersky AV you can download for Win 7 from Kaspersky. I do get an audio and VGA hot key warning error when booting up but this doesn't ssem to affect anything major. It boots quickly as well.

in Sony exec says today’s netbooks stink on Liliputing
What happened to the Sony that was the leader in innovation of small consumer electrics: Radio/cassette/CD/PMP-Walkman, first transistor radio, etc.., etc? Nitwits like Barendson are running the show.
Ever since Akio Morita died in 1999 the company has gone downhill, look at all the fiascos: The missed the LCD TV revolution and had to play catch-up.
This is pure sour grapes and the fact that Sony would want at least $1000 for a netbook which would never sell.

in How to install Ubuntu Eee on the Eee PC 1000H on Liliputing
I tried running from a USB flash drive and it worked.
However, when it comes time to do the actuall install the instructions I am not sure how to partition the hard drive. The 1000H 160GB came with two 80 GB partitions.
Also how do you make the dual boot system default to boot into XP?
I have found a number of suggestions doing a Google search. Most are written in Linuxese. I haven't had to worry about Linux (it was called Unix back then) for 20 years.

One of the partitions should have data on it. That's most likely your
Windows system partition. Don't overwrite it. If you've been saving files to
both partitions things get a little trickier, but the most foolproof method
is to copy anything from the second partition to the same partition Windows
is installed on so that you're unlikely to muck anything up.
Then you can either choose to install to the second partition or you can
resize that partition if you don't think you'll need 80GB.
As for making sure Windows XP boots by default, you'll need to edit the
menu.lst file in your GRUB menu. The easiest way to do this is to pull up a
terminal either from the application menu or by hitting Ctrl+ F2 and typing
"gnome-terminal."
Next, type "sudo nautilus" to pull up the file manager with root privileges.
Enter your password when asked.
Now you want to navigate to the File System, find the folder that says Boot,
and inside it openn the folder that says Grub. Double click on Menu.lst to
edit it. If you didn't type Sudo before opening Nautilus, you won't be able
to save your changes.
Finally, scroll all the way down to the bottom. You should see a list of
operating systems. Just highlight the chunk that starts with something like
"title Windows XP Home Edition" and ends with "chainloader +1" and copy this
so that it's the first operating system listed (above Ubuntu). Now when you
reboot, Windows XP should load by default.
You can also edit the amount of time the GRUB menu will wait for you to make
a selection before choosing the default OS in this menu. Scroll up a bit
until you find the section that says "timeout sec" and change the number
from 10 to 5 or whatever you're most comfortable with.

But if those that already placed orders back in August are being told November and December I don't believe the estimated ship dates.

but why does everybody assume the november dates are correct? by several accounts, they have clearly said they are conservative estimates, and lenovo is known for this.
