in Twitter Your Way to Getting Robbed on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Remember when we were all so worried about privacy on the net? What the hell happened? We must've been full of it.

in 60% of Twitter Users Quit Within the First Month on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
The difference is that Twitter is only valuable if you use it frequently. Since it's based on real time happenings, there's no value in archived material. On the other hand, I can use Facebook frequently or infrequently as I see fit, and its value remains the same. I only log onto Facebook maybe twice a month, and I'm still able to maintain those connections with people and it still holds tremendous value. That's next to impossible on Twitter.

The really are 2 different services for different purposes. We should stop treating them the same.

in Mike Arrington and I disagree on the future on Scobleizer
Great read Robert, but consider product deliverability and accessibility. Simply put, Friendfeed just isn't as accessible to the mainstream yet. They need to do a better job of communicating its purpose and simplifying the application before the mainstream will take notice. Sometimes, it takes more than simply having the best product.

On the other hand, Twitter is establishing a trust with users as the destination for real time information. That gives them a big head start, even if Friendfeed's search is significantly better at the moment.

In the end though, it'll probably be Google that cracks this nut. I predict they'll strike deals with Twitter and others to gain access to their streaming data. Then the game is truly over.

in Who Else Is Disappointed in FriendFeed And Other Twitter Swagger Jackers? on SheGeeks
Swagger Jacker lol. Nice. Word up though. I was quite underwhelmed with Friendfeed's latest updates. It does seem like they just took the "twitter has shown us the way" route rather than blaze their own trail. Their service is unique and distinct enough for them to create a more practical and suitable user experience.

in iTunes Music: Now Up To 30 Percent More Expensive on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Damn...quit the anti profit rhetoric. They're in business to make money. Plus, like James alluded to, it beats paying the $12 per album that we used to pay.

Smarmy Quit the pro profit rhetoric. It doesn't beat the $12 per album if you do the math, and Amazon now undercuts them across the board.
Ben Parr's picture
Ben Parr I agree, they're in it to make money, but if users defect or go to pirating to fulfill their music downloading needs, it ends up being a loss for Apple. Companies like eMusic will push hard for users to switchover with this news.

That's the story out here in LA. Stay in the news any way possible. Of course it's a game. I'm only frustrated with the general public who follow this crap. I love Christian Bale, but I only need to see him on the silver screen. Everything else...EVERYTHING else is a publicity stunt.

I feel you. The last 6 months especially have been kinda slow in tech. Twitter this and Friendfeed that....with a little apple and yahoo mixed in there as well. But at the same time, history tells us that something new and exciting is just on the other side of this recession.

Personally, I think that enterprise web apps will define the latter half of this year much like individual/social apps define the last few years. That's certainly where the money will be made at least. Hopefully the creativity lies there as well. Plus I'm a fan. Here's hoping to your inspiration.

Corvida Thank you Chris!

I think that you may be right about this year being that of enterprise web apps. As much as I'd love to test them, I don't have a use for them to be honest. However, money is becoming an issue and that could cause a shift of focus on certain services.

Good point!

in The Community Is What Makes Social Networks Different on SheGeeks
That's a more powerful insight than I think most realize. When I mentioned Twitter to my sister last week, her response was "isn't that like the facebook status thing?" I couldn't quite articulate the difference...then the US Airways crash happened. The buzz was around Twitter and not Facebook status updates.

in 2009/01/21/twitter-api-gets-limited/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
@christopher sure, twitter incurs the cost of the api requests, but they also benefit greatly from the viral nature of the apps themselves. Twitter wouldn't be what it is today without its developer community.

in The Future of Web Apps: 7 Things Companies Must Do to Succeed on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Maybe I missed something, but I fail to see how these ideas generate profit. Without that, it just looks like a list of your most wanted web app features. We HAVE features already. What they need are viable revenue strategies.

When will gaming consoles release open apis? Think of iphone and android developers creating apps for wii, ps3 and xbox. Opening up consoles to youtube and bringing youtube content to the television is one way communication. I'd like to see the ability to take material from the console onto the open net.

This is so idiotic. I'm guessing the music labels expected Google to blink and provide some sort of compensation or revenue share associated with highly viewed videos that feature copyrighted tracks. Free music is free publicity and I'm sure they recognize that. This action just shows that Google won't play ball with the labels even if it means they must develop and implement this muting technology to drive their point home.

The question is, who will suffer first...Youtube or the music labels?

There are so many more internet companies out there besides Facebook, Twitter and Google. There are interesting companies with interesting people and interesting stories. Why must all the chatter be about the same 4 or 5? Isn't the grand value of the internet the democratization of information and voices? Lately it's turned into a bad soap opera with the same old names and faces every day. Please do the community a favor and begin exploring the thousands of other players out there.

We're all full of sh%!. 5 years ago personal privacy on the net was a HUGE issue. Now, we're looking for MORE ways to relinquish that. It cracks me up when I read about these kids that pasted crap all over facebook and myspace and youtube, only to discover that other people well see that and make judgements based on it.

What the hell happened here?

alexknowshtml What's the unwritten punchline for Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four?

Society didn't take away the privacy of individuals. We gave it away.
Ben Parr You have control still. I choose to make my life an open book on the net. Anything I don't want out, I keep in my head. You just have to find the balance you're comfortable with, or use the tools that protect your privacy enough.

But like I said in #5, it'll start another ethics war.

Google? Hypocrisy?? Naawww.

The day will come when we hold Google in the same regard that many of us hold MS. They're strangling all their competitors because the have the muscle and capital, and the Justice Department has been unable to catch up with them.

But hey, they're giving us free sh**, so who cares, right?

Adam Ostrow at least the DOJ is looking into the Yahoo search ads deal, but yea, for the most part, they still enjoy the same free pass usually only afforded to Apple :)

Off-topic from OpenID:

http://groups.google.com/group/chromium-dev/bro... observes an information architecture muddle, a less than sterling introduction to Chromium developer community. Marks: 9/10 to the Chromium developers :) but to Google:

* only 4/10, for not best supporting the big picture for something as high-profile as Chrome

* only 3/10, for assuming that everyone starts from the same point; for an inappropriately island-like (in this case hierarchical) approach to newcomers.

Whilst I do greatly appreciate much of what Google produces/serves, it's not the first time that I have been unexpectedly, extensively frustrated on Google Island.

The Google Code UI leaves much to be desired and it is (to me) significant that the use of Google Code for issue tracking, in as presigious a project as MacFUSE, has been quietly deprecated after closing 401 of 402 issues: .

(In another project to which I contribute, we chose to move from Google Code to Trac.)

Finally, relating this to OpenID:

I suspect that encouraging Google, in its broadest senses, to pay _greatest_ and _soonest_ attention to OpenID (and to related standards) may have the knock-on effects of:

a) encouraging Google to maintain the broadest possible overview

b) discouraging Google Island approaches.

Best,
Graham

Interesting. It makes you wonder what's next for authorship. Are we going to ask them to sell t-shirts to make up for lost book sales? Of course we aren't at that point yet, but the day is coming where any creative works will be freely available, begging the question of why would we produce works for which we won't be compensated. Music, software, books...what's next?

Wow. Has anyone seen this thing? This is a good example of the blind leading the blind. Exactly who was asking for this feature? And perhaps a better question is...who among us have decided NOT to use friendfeed because they didn't employ live updating? I use the internet as much as anyone, but I'm never staring at my static screen for minutes at a time.

This is completely unnecessary and disorienting. I guess it's a good thing it's in beta. Get rid of it, please!
