in Future of Librarians on What I Learned Today...
It's interesting that this is coming up now given my recent request for ALA to allow non-MLS members to apply for Emerging Leaders.

I think that there will always be value in an MLS. But I think there is value in opening opportunities and embracing librarians with other degrees as equals in the profession. Like Jacque said an MPA is extremely useful in a library setting...as is an MEd and a lot of other degrees.

Experience should count just as much as education as a qualification too.

As I am looking at applying to grad school I have only had one person so far who has an MLS encourage me to pursue an MLS. Pretty much everyone I have spoken with who has an MLS has advised me to go for something other than an MLS. To me that speaks volumes, and I agree it's sad.

I hope that colleges and universities revise their curriculum and offer more relevant courses and tracks for the MLS degree.

in What’s your work week? on What I Learned Today...
Best Buy corporate staff do not have to put in 40 hour weeks. They work as many hours as it takes to get the job done. Sometimes more. Sometimes less. I'd be all for that! There is nothing more aggravating than putting in a 60 hour week then the next week having to take 2 hours of sick leave for a doctor appt.

It will be interesting to see how the gas prices will effect our work weeks. Utah is mandating a 4 day work week for govt employees and we are looking at the same. Maybe the gas prices will have the unanticipated but positive effect of creating more flexibility for organizations that previously were not very flexible.

in Going Green on What I Learned Today...
I've been pondering this same thing about training handouts. I create very detailed 15-20 page handouts and by the time I go to teach the class the software or interface has changed.

I think the one-page handout is a good compromise...that way they at least walk away with something and the URL for the slides.

in We just want flexibility on What I Learned Today...
No dogs, but my cat did walk across the keyboard once during an online class so all this text got entered into chat! When I work at home my kids still go to daycare...unless they are sick.

The thing that struck me in that article was this statement:
"Organizations with high numbers of telecommuters can damage traditional workers' job satisfaction." I'm not sure how we can get around the issue of fairness in libraries when we have to have people to work the desks. Many administrative jobs can be done entirely from home. But for those who work in public service it will be more difficult.

I am much more productive when I am at home without interruptions.
