i think babelfish works most of the time for individual words (mostly nouns). when in doubt use katakana. that's what i was taught. a good portion of young japanese ppl know english so if you saw it slow enough i think they'd understand.

mixiはちょっと難しいと思う。友達がいるけど喋らないでいます。だめだ。the traffic button is so freaky. i end up playing profile tag. haha.

miss anon hehe profile tag is fun, and profile tag can look like you are stalking. i feel scared to look at some peoples profiles too many times because of it, even if they have super interesting journals.

black friday is so annoying! old ladies shopping for men who don't know anything about mens' sizes and the slow walkers make it not worth it.

i'm boring... i only like the plain chicken and beef flavor. sometimes the cheese flavor, but that might be a diff. company. they should have a family sized ramen. imagine a giant sized cup to feed a family of four.

in Nothing Scarier Than a Gaijin on Tofugu Comments
if there aren't any other gaijin-san costume then japanese people equate caucasianness with foreignness.... what about everybody else? i think b/c japan is so homogeneous they don't realize sometimes that some things may be offensive to foreigners. overall i think most japanese are accepting of foreigners, but only to a degree, much like any country.

in Nice Japan p I: Violence and Anime on Tofugu Comments
hi lee. movies like battle royale and suicide club shouldn’t be blamed for ppl’s actions. (my sensei did tell me about ppl copying the movie ping pong though.) they should be seen from some angles as a comment on society. i like japanese movies/anime w/ death. they bring a beauty to the morbidity.

in How to not talk like a Japanese Transvestite (or a boy/girl) on Tofugu Comments
i like ending sentences in da or plain form + ka, but that sounds a bit ignorant/rude. (my inner yakuza is coming out. their “dialect” is rather intriguing). it’s a bit amusing hearing guys use japanese that my sensei says is childish/ girly like arienai. george takei used it on heroes and it was cool cuz it was on my slang list from my conv. class.

ah! i've been outed as speaking girly japanese. baka. i copied a little girl from a dorama. i saw this article about foreigners learning girly japanese from their wives since that's the main source of the language. kochi makes a trashy woman. haha. japanese male speech kicksass. it's so intimidating. i dare a girl to use ore.

in Putting the “hu” in Tofugu on Tofugu Comments
my random experience w/ fu/hu... my friend who has fu in her name doesn’t care if you say fu or hu. my sensei who’s japanese gets mad if you say fu. my american sensei corrects us and says fu. wtf. he doesn’t understand when we said hu. my other japanese sensei had me do an experient to see if non-japanese can say hu correctly. even though i say hu and it sounds like hu it’s not hu like a japanese person’s hu. some weird comp. program illustrated this fact. most words sound like hu to me w/ exceptions like shufu. similarly the l/r thing various depending on word too. o the joys of linguistics.

in Advanced Japanese II: “At the Same Time” Grammar on Tofugu Comments
yea, i know it's a noun, but to mean the verb in english you usually have to attach a verb to it. if you're nominalizing usually no or koto is added to the verb. i'm confused as to why you can just use the noun here. btw, kanji is spelt wrong.

ah level 1! i think currently i could pass level 3 if i studied a lot, but after this semester/year it should be a breeze. i hope i can pass level 2 or 1 within 2 years so i can increase my chances of being accepted into this program. 法の勉強のかたわら why doesn't 'study" need a verb? i've never seen it w/o suru or yaru attached to it.

in Beginning Japanese III: Taking Steps on Tofugu Comments
i've been studying for about a year and am practically conversant. my biggest limitation is lack of vocabulary. japanglish doesn't work all the time. haha. speaking, writing, and talking outside of class helped a lot even though it pissed my friends off. a tip i think would help ppl studying would be to talk to a japanese person. most japanese ppl i meet are more than happy to help. in general being exposed to the language almost 24/7 greatly improves comprehension. i think it's pointless to only use japanese while in a class like a lot of ppl in my class. the class can only teach you so much before you have to put in real effort. motivation is key to becoming fluent. seriously think why you are learning japanese. ( i will forever think learning japanese to pick up japanese girls is the dumbest reason ever.) i think plateau-ing will happen, but like koichi said don't give up and keep studying and you will level up.

HAHA nihon ga DAISUKI. av idols seem so out of place in japanese society, but i think they’re more accepted in japan then pornstars in america. the time limit is hilarious. they really should charge more so the guys get their money’s worth.

good idea to live on the water, but this will sink eventually. how are they fixing the lack of oxygen near the top? i'd think it would be rather expensive to permanently pump air that high up. maybe this will spawn a super futuristic society. i want my hovering cars and new tokyo!

ahh! i don’t have a ds. i wanna get one though. kanji is one of the best parts of japanese. i guess this’ll be my 1st “game.” there must be a couple of these since i saw one in which you hold the ds vertically and write kanji. hmm... it's so expensive. i guess cuz it's imported. what a good investment. those kids dance like that girl in the polysic’s video.
