in Twitter at Its Finest: Television Recommendations on Kim Werker Blog
I just finished watching all of Veronica Mars--I LOVED it, I was sad when it ended. I was not a fan of Deadwood though (with all the swearing, you'd think I would have liked it more! ;), only got through a few episodes before I lost interest (the same thing happened with the Tudors). Just started Battlestar Galactica (I was a little hesitant with this one, don't know why really)--I liked what I've seen so far, which isn't much admittedly, just the miniseries that kicked it all off. Sounds like you have a nice weekend planned! Oh, and I'd watch the entire series of Alias all over again if I had the time--I loved that show (when and if you watch--there's a reason my kid's name is Sydney! ;))

in Health Care: Friend or Foe? on Kim Werker Blog
Another really messed up thing about the US health system is, as best I can describe it, the 'soft' price structure. For instance, for a non-insured person, a one-night hospital stay might run you ~$6,000. However, if you have insurance, the insurance company will probably be able to negotiate the price down to say $1,500 (a significant amount usually), of which you'll be responsible for a certain percentage depending on your coverage. So, if you're not insured you're doubly screwed--you don't have any negotiating power to 'lower' the price AND you're stuck with the entire bill!

I was painfully offended by this very thing after I spent a night in an
emergency room in Delaware after we had moved to Vancouver. I had travel
insurance, but while I was fighting directly with the hospital to send me my
bill (don't get me started on how so many large American institutions can't
handle a six-digit postal code), they mentioned things like negotiating with
my insurance company. It is a sick and twisted system.

in Talk to Me (Us All) About Palin: Open Thread on Kim Werker Blog
Gah. Do not even get me. started. Anyway, I think Carrie hit most of the major points about Sarah Palin's appeal. The social conservatives like her because of her stance on abortion and religious background. Others like her because she is perceived as being 'folksy' and 'just like us'. My MOM, who usually votes democratic, gave me this nugget straight from Palin's talking points--she thinks that Palin will 'shake things up' in good ol' boy Washington. I guess some people see her as 'together' (the whole being Governor while raising five kids bit) and well spoken, but if you've seen one of the three paltry interviews she's given, I'm not sure where people get THAT impression from (she may be well-spoken from a teleprompter, but 'off the cuff' on actual, substantive issues? I don't think so).
For some reason, over the past 10 years, it's been some sort of prerequisite for people to 'want to have a beer' with you in order to be U.S. president--I'd rather have someone who was smarter than me, more patient, and better spoken. I don't think *I* would be a good president--and while Sarah Palin has more experience in public service and executive experience than I do, I don't think what experience she DOES have qualifies her to be a potential president of the U.S. (and John McCain ain't looking so hot lately). Oh boy, I'd better stop while I'm ahead, eh? :)

Yeahhhh, Heroes totally bored my socks off (and I didn't stick around for the second hour--I need my sleep!). And I'm sticking w/Fringe for now, even though it creeps me out a little and some of the 'real' science is even off (what can I say, I have a thing for JJ Abrams).

Duuuude, I LOVED that book! I'd definitely have to say around nine I was enthralled w/the Madeline L'Engle books (Wrinkle in Time, etc., Austin family series, other books about the O'Keefe's) and anything by L.M. Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables, Emily of New Moon). I can't wait for my girls to read these too!

You know, I've never read Anne of Green Gables. I need to remedy that.

I'm just glad I got to SEE it on the web--I've only been able to access the site (I believe it was down starting yesterday) in the past couple of hours (well, I'm sure if I'd tried late at night or early in the morning I would have been ok). So, I've seen it, and can I just say--Nathan Fillion makes me swoon (almost audibly!) and I just love NPH to bits (no swooning, but maybe it's that I know he's gay?). Yay!

I don't know Kim, Greg looks like he's getting awfully 'comfortable' with that dress model ;). Happy birthday (yeah, 32 doesn't feel much different)! When I worked from home, I was kept sane only because I did alot of field work anyway, so true 'office days' were kept to a minimum. If I had an editing job from home? I'd so do what you're doing!

in iPhone in Canada: Zoiks! on Kim Werker Blog
I'll just say that, until VERY recently, I was using an almost 8 YEAR OLD cellphone--oh yeah baby, I was kickin' it old skool! However, the battery JUST died (it's as old as the phone--they obviously don't make them anymore) and forced me to get a 'fancy-pants' LG flip phone. I don't think I'll be touching the iPhone for another decade or two :). But I say you should try and wait, at least for a little while, to see if Rogers will become more reasonable (it's like when people bought the iPhone in the US for like $400 the moment it came out and then Apple lowered the price a couple of months later by a whopping $100). It sounds like they're just trying to screw those people who REALLY want an iPhone as soon as it's released in Canada. Fight the man, Kim!

Kim, I have a picture somewhere (my parent's house?) of you, Alisa, and Jay eating Doritos in your freshman suite at Bingo--I see not much has changed! I must admit though, with this pregnancy, one of the 'naughty' things I allow myself is Doritos (Daniel brought some bizarre flavor to a cookout and we got 'stuck' with the extras....or I might have just hidden them so no one would eat them:))

in Bah. Humbug. on Kim Werker Blog
Oh, that Jenna Bush wedding crap bugged the ever loving hell out of me--it is most certainly NOT news yet so much coverage was devoted to it that you would think it was news. I thank god every day that I have NPR; this weekend, I found myself listening with rapt fascination(!)to an entire 'This American Life' that was devoted to just HOW the current housing/credit crisis was created. But, what with all the fluff counted as news on CNN, there's no way CNN could cover the whole story in a typical two minute sound bite. \end rant (I think you may have touched a nerve!)
