Tinfoil, there are programs called reverse mortgages that are designed *specifically* for the theoretical elder you outlined above.
It is a way for these people to use the money they've saved all their lives but that happens to be locked up in the form of real property as opposed to cash.
If for some reason you don't support reverse mortgages, then please comment on my hypothetical elder...

I'm 85 years old and moved into my town with my wife 60 years ago. I bought my house at market rates at the time, worked my entire life and lived within my means. I contributed to my community as a volunteer, paid my taxes on time, and paid off my house. Now I'm on a fixed income, I just sold the house I lived in for 60 years for $500k, tax free due to the primary residence sale exclusion. I'm renting a house from a responsible landlord, but because of increasing costs, I'm right at the limit of my income. I'd rather not dip into the $500k, because I want to give that to my kids. Oh, wait, I don't have any kids, so I want to go to Foxwoods every couple of weeks and blow a couple of grand, or better yet, I want to go on a cruise every 6 months.
The $500k is mine. I worked hard for it. Why should I have to contribute to the costs of running the city and state. I'm old. Isn't that enough?

If you don't support reverse mortgages, then you should have no problem with my hypothetical either.

Well, that's fair in one respect, but it exposes the real reason for the current fiscal mess. It divorces consumption from the responsibility of paying. We get to enjoy the benefits the government provides, whether we can pay for it or not. (based on what we earn, not what we consume).
So the natural tendency then is to keep voting more benefits for ourselves, cause somebody else will be forced to pay for it if we can't.
This breeds and entitlement mentality (which is now rampant) and is the fundamental reason why people borrowed more they can afford. Because they feel entitled to the things that money can buy, regardless of whether they have the money or not.

Controversial? Why controversial? That is just BSkyB sports hype to raise the 'interest' in the match.

If Morgan's header had con in that goal would not have been disallowed for Webber standing (static) in an otherwise offside position. Once the Watford 'keeper played the ball this brought Webber on-side as he was now behind the ball when last played & the last player was an opponent, either of which events change his status. He is then thus free to become active, which he did.

And if you want a subjective rather than objective argument - if Webber 'should' (i.e. what pundits think is 'right' rather than what the laws of football say) have been given offside and wasn't it just makes up for the disallowed late goal on Saturday against WHU which 'should' have been allowed as no foul was commited by Kozluk on the 'keeper'. There's one problem with any recovery scenario I can think of; interest rates. Once the velocity of money spikes, the global bond markets are not going to dither. They will sell off hard and fast. What then; monetize the federal debt? Buy every mortgage? Buy all the commercial paper?

The problem of too much debt hasn't gone anywhere. It's just sitting out there, waiting for all this new money to gain traction. But when that happens, at some point lending becomes very dangerous at anything approaching current interest rates. Default risk may recede, but inflation risk can be equally damaging to lenders. So now, those mountains of debt are still present, just with rapidly rising interest rates. How does that get resolved?

According to a friend of mine, this is just the way that maps are handled in this industry. He has used many GPS' and many mapping applications over the years and he says they all break down their maps into 1000s of tiny little files.

You know it's well and good to get angry about this, but there are a number of practical reasons why it's not going to get fixed soon. First, people on the driver's side of the car often can't get out on the other side. It's not just a convenient way out, it's often the only way out.

Second, bike riders aren't big and wide. They often blend right into the background.

There's nothing wrong with greed, it's a basic human emotion. In a true capitalist system, greed is balanced by fear of failure, poverty, death, etc. The trouble with greed arises only when socialism takes the fore. The greedy soon learn that the brunt of their failure is borne by all, and the once effective regulation by natural selection becomes ineffective. Then the system is left trying to regulate every individual action that may hurt the group. The result is tyranny.

Greed is not the problem.

As I mentioned above, greed is not "unchecked" under a true capitalist system. It is checked by respect for the consequences of unbridled greed. The "sub-optimal outcomes" are suffered by the ones who allow their greed to overcome their good judgement.

Unfortunately, what we have is not a capitalist system, not any longer. Socialism has transferred responsibility from the individual to society, and the events of the past two years have furthered that process. What you are suggesting now, "further regulatory oversight" is simply the next step in the path toward tyranny. There will never be a good stopping point in your regulatory process, because humans will always strive for maximum personal advantage in every endeavor. Eventually the government must regulate every activity, for the good of society of course.

You may think that prudent people can stop "regulating" at a prudent point. But, once the risks are socialized, and we are well down that road in every aspect, then that's not possible. So, I say again, greed is not the problem, nor is regulation of greed the answer. Market discipline is the answer, the only check for greed that works short of totalitarianism.

You call free market ideology a religion. I suppose that means that, in your opinion, believers in the free market have no valid logic behind their beliefs, just faith. Meanwhile you place your "faith" in the ideal "regulator", the government as arbiter of the fine line between having enough and "greed", the selfless bureaucrat who is somehow less greedy, less corrupt, more diligent, less capable of causing harm, even though he has been handed more power over the lives of his fellow men.

You seek an ever more powerful government, run by ever more powerful regulators overseeing ever greater swaths of our lives and decision making, with the stipulation, of course, that those regulators share your ideals. But, I guess if that government, under future leadership, tried to exert that massive power in ways that you disapproved, they'd be Nazis. Well, I don't trust your big government, and you shouldn't trust mine because governments are just people and they are no more or less philanthropic than your average greedy American walking the street.

In response to my earlier post on another article, you wrote this: "Are you telling me that banks wouldn't try to securitize liar loans if 'market discipline' held them in check. That is preposterous. The risk has been offloaded onto a third party. Again, this is why regulations exist."

My response is, they would surely try if there was a buck to be made, but without implicit government backing behind a large swath of the US mortgage market, Fannie, Freddie, FHA, etc., the global buyers of those securitized loans would have been much more diligent. Without government subsidization of mortgage rates, and artificial suppression of interest rates by the federal reserve, it is unlikely that a housing bubble would have even been possible.

If you don't believe that government intervention in the free market has been behind the serial bubbles we have seen in recent decades, has encouraged the greed and risk taking, I'm probably wasting my time here. So here's my last word. The current administration, their spending policies, monetary policy, and housing policy, are in the process of creating the next (and greatest) bubble right now. You can line up powerful regulators from here to timbuktoo and they won't prevent this whole thing from happening again and it will crash in a more spectacular fashion. Bigger government is the problem, not the answer.
