I just wanted to let you know that I think this article is a good bit of inspiration. The funny thing is, a lot of what you describe as being Web 3.0 worthy is already starting to happen. I especially enjoyed your explanation of RSS and how much of a role it's going to be in the web 3.0 world.

Re: How To Write A Web 2.0 Glossary

Not only have you done a good job in giving us the ACTUAL definition of the term, but you also provided us with the no BS definition of what the term means in the REAL WORLD. Starting my own WordPress powered blog in May, I've seen nothing but growth for each month since I started. I got lucky on one particular article and a few others and those have indeed given me momentum. The search engine traffic is always trickling in and I think as long as I keep the train moving, people will want to hop on.

Increasing those RSS Subscriber numbers though have proven to be difficult. The Backlash

Nope, I don't think people should run to the hills nor do I think they will. Too many people have worked hard to build up their followers and I doubt most of them would think about moving to a different service where they would have to start over. One thing Twitter has on some of the competition is that is offers an independent service to use. FriendFeed, Jaiku and some of the other ones are mere content aggregators. If the notion of being opened changed, and services started closed their doors with their API's, FriendFeed and those other aggegration services would die off because they are riding on the backs of all of the other services that are out their.

I think people are so fickle over Twitter because it's a service that so many people love to use and it's a service that so many people probably depend on now. Also, to the normal end user, it's frustrating to think that a service which handles the broadcasting of 140 characters or less messages has so many problems. I would think that what they are doing would be simple, but apparently it's not.

It's also interesting to note that Twitter was developed to allow people to answer the question, "What are you doing right now?" Instead, people are using Twitter as a global instant messaging service which is way out of line as to the way Twitter was supposed to work. It would appear to me that Twitter may have to completely revamp the service in order to align themselves with the way the majority of us use their service.

Re: Save Money With Section 179 [Taxes]

Oi the tax code! On the flip side, someone like Arrington can blog about the sun rising and everyone in the blogosphere would suddenly give a damn?

If thats the point you're trying to get across, I agree. I also agree that in many aspects, web 2.0 was, is, and may forever be a glorified popularity contest. I could have 1,000 friends or followers on Twitter yet, if no one knows who any of those people are, I'm just another nobody. However, if my followers or friendslist contains A-List bloggers for example, I suddenly mean business and am worth something. That sucks that you had so many problems logging into your account. That whole Yahoo merger thing really screwed up alot of people. I can vouch for the fact that the reviews I write, whether it's about a website, service, wordpress theme or plugin, they all take quite a bit of time and effort to write. Sure, I could go the way of the tumblr attitude and simply link to stuff. But I think theres a limit to the less is more approach. I have the attitude of trying to add value to the net instead of adding crap. I think the net and the blogosphere has enough crap, there is no need for myself to add to the pile.

But what I've loved about the blogosphere that is far below the A-List radar is the fact that most of these individuals are writing from the heart. They tell it like it is and they really give you a piece of their mind. Reading a book seems to be much more refreshing to me than reading 600 RSS feeds with 6 million non-read entries. Also, Wired magazine is a great thing to read when you're bored. It's even better for staring at the info graphics those guys create.

(NSFW) Hey Steven, sounds like you have consumed a couple orders of this stuff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wS5xOZ7Rq8

Re: Are We Painting Ourselves Into A FriendFeed Corner?

human beings have an innate fascination with their tools regardless of profession.

Not sure why, but that statement has me thinking about a group of monkeys in a circle, some of which are smashing their fingers on a laptop keyboard trying to update their social media status.

Steven, you should do an experiment where you don;t visit FriendFeed, Twitter or any other social media site or use a social service. Go on a brainstorming session on the who's and the why's and then come back and tell us what you came up with. Get out of the social storm and into individuality.

This is one reason why I loved the Business 2.0 magazine which is now out of print. They focused on ideas, the who's and the why's instead of the tools.

Re: Discussion Point: Who’s that widget talking to?

Hmm, wonder if Google will go down in history as the worlds largest honey pot.

Re: From the Pipeline – 7.30.08

That is one awesome looking storm cloud. However, they have been going through some hard times. The Woopra client 1.2 had some serious issues but 1.3 appeared to fix those. Version 1.3.3 o the Woopra WordPress plugin also had some serious issues but they immediately fixed that and released version 1.3.4. By the way Steve, you could auto tag users through Woopra but I don't think it will work on your site because you're using Disqus instead of the native commenting section. Not that big of a deal anyways unless you want to know people by name who are browsing around the site. Would make chatting with people you know much easier and less spooky.

Re: Join the journey to re-discovering one’s passion

Sounds like Larry has definitely been through the rungs. I think doing something new or saying something new is in and of itself, a barrier. I think much of that has to do with the comfort level of sticking with the norm since the norm is somewhat predictable.

I'll be trying during 2009 to get around the barrier of doing new things or speaking my mind regarding new ideas. If I can convince myself to not care as much about what people think or the ridicule I might face, I think I'd be able to make some progress.

Re: New Twitter Slavery Era

this has got to be one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

Re: What Prompts You to Follow to Someone’s Twitter?

I look at their latest tweets and if they have said anything remotely related to me or of interest, I'll follow them. That's the argument I'm trying to discuss in favor of the Repository system. No need to force plugin authors to code their plugin so that it meets the repositories requirements, but the repository should be viewed as the BIG BOYS area of plugins where the end user's expectations for plugins are high.

It would be nice though if plugin authors abided by some sort of guidelines, even with their small file hacks. But I realize that WordPress is as open as an open source project can be, and any guidelines that are presented could just as easily be ignored.

The more I think about these plugin issues, the more my head spins around on my shoulders lol. There are so many different ways you could take this.

But I agree. We are in discussions right now and are not doing any real work in terms of getting things done. Perhaps filing something in the trac system would be the way to go?

Re: Plugin Standards

Or, should the standards or guidelines be in affect for only those plugins that want to be hosted in the WP Plugin Repository and everything else outside of the repository is fair game for the plugin author to do what he thinks is best.

But you bring up a good point in that, it would still be nice to see some sort of UNOFFICIAL list of guidelines that plugin authors could CHOOSE to follow if they wanted to. Perhaps the reason so many plugin authors do the things they do is because there is no list of guidelines to follow?

Re: WordPress Weekly

Hey Andrew, thanks for the link love. But, I think a good example of what you are talking about is the search in the admin panel. Who uses that thing lol.

Re: Unobtrusive config for fire and forget plugins

They may have the option, but what happens if this becomes yet another place I have to browse to, to see if the plugin settings link is there or not. I wish plugin authors would settle on a one stop shop where all configuration links are located.

Although I understand that because of how some of the administration panels are named, settings links sometimes don't belong in a certain menu versus others. This is a usability issue. The bottom line is, if the theme on the repository is fully compliant with GPL and the credit link points back towards a site that openly supports or advertises non-gpl stuff, Matt does not want that on the repository. Why should he allow that type of advertising to be presented to his community through the theme repository? However, Matt did state that the removals would be done with reason so if anyone is unsure if they meet the new guidelines, they can send the theme repository guys an email to see if their theme, site is compatible.

Re: Are Premium WordPress Plugins/Themes Unethical?

Unfortunately, changing ones business model is hard especially if it is bringing food on the table. The good news is if you want to call it that is Matt, nor anyone else is forcing those people to change their business model. Matt has stated that they do not plan on pursuing legal action against those who violate their license. The difference here though is that if you're a theme author who sells themes with restrictions, single use licenses, etc. you are violating the GPL and thus, you will not receive support from either Matt or anything under the WordPress.org umbrella.

And the point has to be made just for the sake of making it, Matt is not against anyone making money through or off of WordPress. He would just like to see it done in a way that honors the GPL.

By the way,some of those questions were ones I retrieved from the community as they are affected most by these guidelines. I did come up with most of the questions myself though! I agree, Matt is a stand up guy, but he has laid forth the guidelines for which he expects theme authors or plugin authors to follow in order to garner the support of not only himself but the wordpress project through the corresponding repositories. If people don't want to do that, nothing stops them from doing things on their own.

Re: Are Premium WordPress Plugins/Themes Unethical?

Sorry Kirsta, I can't remember if we specifically discussed what constitutes a derivative work or not. I realize this is voluntary, but I feel that at some point in time, all of this broadcasting is going to bite people in the rear due to identity theft. The more information that a thieve can gain against a particular individual the better, at least in their eyes.

I just don't seem to understand the logic of broadcasting all of this information to the web.

Re: 2007/06/20/bunnyherolabs-bebox/

If someone were wanting to become an application developer, I would highly advise them to start creating widgets left and right as they appear to be taking over the web. However, what are Comcast customers supposed to do if Comcast is their only choice for broadband. I agree with both Pete and Kriss in that Digg should be an example of what Wisdom of Crowds is NOT. Digg seems to be an excellent source of news and golden nuggets of cool stuff found on the internet, but it's definitely not a diverse crowd.

All one has to do to figure out just what sort of wisdom the digg crowd enjoys is to review all of the articles that have made it to the front page of digg. Once you compile that data, you'll be able to see what wisdom the crowd of Digg enjoys thereby strengthening the argument that the movers and shakers of digg are nothing more than niche groups which is entirely the opposite of the wisdom of crowds theory.

Re: 2007/11/03/10-events-for-bloggers/

If a go to each and every one of these events, am I guaranteed to be an A-List blogger where the entire internet drools over every Twitter message, every post and bashes me just to bash me?

Re: 2007/11/05/in-case-you-missed-it-web-20-is-bad-now/

How about this one -

Cloudware - apps and services that once would have run on a desktop operating system now run in the cloud: unbounded, evershifting, intangible collection of servers that make up the internet.

Re: 2007/11/05/in-case-you-missed-it-web-20-is-bad-now/

I think whats even funnier than these buzzwords are the job titles associated with so-called Web 2.0 positions.

Chief Evangelist:
Head of a company’s sales and marketing team

Virtual World Bureau Chief:
Head of a news bureau in Second Life

Brand Champion:
A PR person for a particular company’s brand

Senior Interface Hacker:
Writer of code to build applications and create user interfaces for podcasts

Web Product Demigod:
Creator of open-source content management systems

Online Audience Development Manager:
Head of effort to get a company’s site to the top of a Google or Yahoo! search results

* VP of Emerging Media
* Chief Risk Officer
* New Media Specialist
* Chief Diversity Officer
* Chief Interrupter Officer
* Instigator
* Content Analyst

Re: 2007/11/06/yahoo-hearings/

Well thats not good. I’ve given it some thought and have come to the conclusion that social-networks are nothing more than marketing data harvesters. Asides from having a ton of eyeballs to market to advertisers, most of the user’s on these social-networks provide accurate user data. The reason I believe this to be true is that, you want at least most of your profile to be accurate so your friends know who you are on that network. This accurate data makes for good demographics that the social network owner doesn’t have to work so hard to retrieve.

In the end, you’re not an end user. Your a pawn within a giant game called online advertising. If you don’t like it, don’t use the damn service. Here is a better idea, buy a webhosting account, download WordPress, and create your own social network that you control, around your blog.

Re: 2007/12/04/digg-alternatives-poll/

I don't use Digg or any of it's alternatives. The great thing is, I can maintain my own blog while writing for the other ones. Freelancing and guest blog posting is like stepping stones. You start out with your own blog to build a base, then you apply for jobs on slightly bigger blogs (higher profile) then you move up and up and up and eventually, take care of yourself through freelance income while at the same time, enjoying a nice wide ranging audience while enjoying a following that increases as you become more successful.

Again, thanks for the kind words and I'll try to document how I'm doing and what I'm doing on my personal site.

Re: Finally the competition is closed and results will be announced in a week!

I was one of the judges and I recently sent in my scores :) I will say this, most of the entries were great and contained lots of great information. I have tried and think I am successful in creating a mix between using Twitter the right way, vs using Twitter as a promotional tool. I don't link to everything I do, but I do link to articles I spent quite a bit of time writing because I look forward hearing some sort of feedback, or to start a conversation on Twitter.

I use TwitBin which allows me to see my Friends Twitter messages within my browser sidebar allowing me to continue the conversation easily while also being able to post a tweet. I too, don't use Twitter so much as to say what I am doing at the moment, I generally Tweet random thoughts, or I respond to someones question, or I try my best to start a conversation.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I never seem to get people involved in the topics I bring up. Maybe I should use the new search feature of Twitter and add all kinds of Web 2.0 specific people to my watchlist.

Re: My Social Media Toolkit

For Live and Interactive Podcasting, I recommend Talkshoe.com Less quality, then if you would do it yourself, but if you get enough people involved, it's quite fun to interact live with your listeners.

For news reader, I recommend FeedDemon. Ideas are turning into reality for many people and because of web 2.0, the barrier to entry is practically nil. Of course, the barrier to entry or lack thereof could be considered a drawback.

At any rate, I think social-networking is out of control and we are being deluged in web 2.0 startups on a daily basis. I think it will alright though, considering the market aka userbase will determine which of these startups stick around for the long haul, or which ones will die off.

Re: Colorful LED Keyboard for Your Computer

I don't know. In comparison, you might find this article I wrote on Performancing going down the same path http://performancing.com/do-you-know-the-rules-... Page Rank, Technorati, and links all acting as new levels, experience points, and becoming the best as at we do. Practically anything and everything in life can be compared to a game. Hell, many people even view life as a game itself.

Read Jeffro2pt0's latest blog post....Eye Doctors Idea Of A Joke>>>

Re: Industrial Chic Pepper Shaker

Very interesting indeed. Gives you a nice way of displaying a bunch of the content you've done recently and in the past. I almost switched by blog over to the Structure theme but instead, hacked away at mine again.

Welcome to the WordPress community. By the way, I've added and updated the link to your blog in my blogroll :)

Also of note, would it be possible for someone to come up with an SQL statement that goes through your database and changes all entries that have the old URL to a new URL.

Re: New Features for Re-Launch of Blog Bloke dot com

Hey Bloke, I still think you are relevant and I love when you give your opinions on the blogosphere or on certain parties within the blogosphere. As for the advertising aspect, I don't blame you at all. Blogging as a hobby is great, but at some point, you would like to have the hobby at least pay for itself or the hobby will disappear. At least you are being upfront about the advertising and it will be interesting to see if you can pull in any revenue the ethically correct way.

If that doesn't work, I highly suggest you take your blogging skills and use them to get you hired for another blog. That way, you could get paid to blog on that site and then pay for this site which would be your personal blog. You wouldn't have to worry about advertising since someone else would be paying you. If you end up becoming desperate for income, my last ditch effort would be to talk with a blog network to see if they could buy you or acquire your site to be added in to the network. Then they pay you either a flat rate or on performance.

Jeffro2pt0's last blog post..Not So Severe Storms

Re: The Great Web 2.0 Ripoff

Hey Bloke. It wouldn't be too hard to catalog Web 2.0 as nothing but a train of copy cats and in fact, you would be pretty accurate. But like the free market, the cream of the crop will rise to the top. Sure, there a hundreds of Twitter clones, but Twitter still maintains the majority of users for it's niche because its the best and it has the mass following.

I agree with your initial line of thought. More innovation would sure be refreshing.
