in louisgray.com: Scoble Starts His FriendFeed/Twitter Monetization Strategy on louisgray.com
But if he would have provided disclosure, would that have backfired the idea and less people would have clicked on it?

Louis Gray
Jeffro, that's possible. If he disclosed it was an affiliate link, there would be some who might natively go to Amazon, or ignore the thread. But others might actually want to 'reward' Robert for his work in the same way they rewarded John Gruber. I think Robert's well enough liked by the community for him to do well even with disclosure.

in Great Interview with Wordpress-Founder Matt Mullenweg on Kasper Sorensen
Thanks for taking the time out to listen to the entire show. Lots of great information was presented in those two hours and Matt stuck around for 2-3 hours AFTER THAT! to answer any other questions people had.
I'm really happy to see that you picked up on his passion for OpenSource and that his heart for the WordPress software is in the right place. Really, after this interview I don't think we have anything to worry about with regards to the future of the project.

in Man Shoots Attacking Dog…Was He Justified? on The Dog Files
Just wanted to pass along that their has been an update to the story:
http://wtam.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsart...
Looks like the only charge they could pursue is the one were the rottweiler owner failed to have his dog on a leash no longer than 8 feet in length. They say the misdemeanor will probably end in a fine.

Man, just viewing what is possible now and how 'it could be' used in the future
is really cool. I for one can't wait to see augmented reality devices become
an everyday occurrence.

in My experience of Flexx on Fun with WordPress
I was their during that presentation and I was also impressed. I have played around with the theme on my local server and it is much easier to use and configure than Shifter was. I don't know when I'll need to use it but I can't wait for something to come along which will provide the excuse :P

in Man Shoots Attacking Dog…Was He Justified? on The Dog Files
It's a tough call, but if left no other choice, I would rather see my dog live than die. Also, their is no telling what would have happened to me once the Rott decided to attack me rather than the dog. This entire situation is terrible but the results from the case and whether they decide to press charges on the man who shot the dog will be interesting.

in Fear of thinking on Shooting at Bubbles
One of the reasons why I loved reading Business 2.0 magazine is because it was filled with business/people who were doing new things, capitalizing on new ideas, new ways of doing things. I think doing something new or saying something new is in and of itself, a barrier. I think much of that has to do with the comfort level of sticking with the norm since the norm is somewhat predictable.
I'll be trying during 2009 to get around the barrier of doing new things or speaking my mind regarding new ideas. If I can convince myself to not care as much about what people think or the ridicule I might face, I think I'd be able to make some progress.

Sounds like Larry has definitely been through the rungs. I hope that by doing the blog, he can feel better that he has gotten his thoughts out into the open and perhaps the blog will serve as means of straightening everything out. I've added the site to my link blog and will be keeping an eye out on his progress. Sounds like a good friend too.

I plan on having Brian G and Jason on soon sometime in 2009. For now, I suggest taking a listen to the 10/10/2008 02:00 PM edition of WordPress Weekly where I did a special interview with Brian G around the time he was launching Revolution 2.

Sorry Kirsta, I can't remember if we specifically discussed what constitutes a derivative work or not. I do know that specific issue was discussed and debated very heavily on the WP-Hackers mailing list. Here is the link if you have the time to read two miles worth of debate which I can't tell how it ended.

Unfortunately, changing ones business model is hard especially if it is bringing food on the table. The good news is if you want to call it that is Matt, nor anyone else is forcing those people to change their business model. Matt has stated that they do not plan on pursuing legal action against those who violate their license. The difference here though is that if you're a theme author who sells themes with restrictions, single use licenses, etc. you are violating the GPL and thus, you will not receive support from either Matt or anything under the WordPress.org umbrella.
And the point has to be made just for the sake of making it, Matt is not against anyone making money through or off of WordPress. He would just like to see it done in a way that honors the GPL.
By the way, some of those questions were ones I retrieved from the community as they are affected most by these guidelines. I did come up with most of the questions myself though! I agree, Matt is a stand up guy, but he has laid forth the guidelines for which he expects theme authors or plugin authors to follow in order to garner the support of not only himself but the wordpress project through the corresponding repositories. If people don't want to do that, nothing stops them from doing things on their own.

That point was raised time and time again during and after the show. The bottom line is, if the theme on the repository is fully compliant with GPL and the credit link points back towards a site that openly supports or advertises non-gpl stuff, Matt does not want that on the repository. Why should he allow that type of advertising to be presented to his community through the theme repository? However, Matt did state that the removals would be done with reason so if anyone is unsure if they meet the new guidelines, they can send the theme repository guys an email to see if their theme, site is compatible.

in Six Apart acquires and shuts down Pownce on VentureBeat
So, Six apart can lay off its work force but they have enough cash laying around to acquire a microblogging service and then shut it down. I'd be pretty pissed if I was recently laid off by Six apart.
Asides from that, I hope this serves as a reminder as to what could happen if Twitter or some other service that is used by the public just disappears. We have no remorse but thankfully, they are at least providing export tools.

Tell you what, I came close to using IntenseDebate as I become increasingly frustrated with styling the threaded comments for my theme. What a nightmare. Still on the fence but using something like ID looks more appealing the more that time goes on.

I'm sorry to hear that you ran into theme issues with ID. I'm happy to help troubleshoot any theme issues if you'd be willing to reinstall IntenseDebate. Please let me know.

in Obama: The morning after and some last thoughts on The Inquisitr
Hey Steve, just wanted to stop by and thank you for the quote/link. Right now, there seems to be this resounding feeling of hope. Like a renewed sense of focus to get things back in order. Only time will tell if Obama was filled with hot air and delivers empty promises or he delivers the change that his entire campaign was centered around. I hope the momentum and the feeling of hope continues for a very long time, for the sake of America.
If something like JFK happens to Obama, I can't comprehend how much of a disaster this would be for the U.S. and its people.

in Why you should start blogging on other established blogs! on Blog Design Studio
Great round up of reasons as to why one might want to look into freelance writing for other blogs/people. The great thing is, I can maintain my own blog while writing for the other ones. Freelancing and guest blog posting is like stepping stones. You start out with your own blog to build a base, then you apply for jobs on slightly bigger blogs (higher profile) then you move up and up and up and eventually, take care of yourself through freelance income while at the same time, enjoying a nice wide ranging audience while enjoying a following that increases as you become more successful.
Again, thanks for the kind words and I'll try to document how I'm doing and what I'm doing on my personal site.

in Unobtrusive config for fire and forget plugins on Fun with WordPress
They may have the option, but what happens if this becomes yet another place I have to browse to, to see if the plugin settings link is there or not. I wish plugin authors would settle on a one stop shop where all configuration links are located.
Although I understand that because of how some of the administration panels are named, settings links sometimes don't belong in a certain menu versus others. This is a usability issue. Still, I'd like to see some sort of unofficial standard to make the end users life a little less complicated.

in Back to the future on Fun with WordPress
Perhaps part of the problem is that, there are so many people using WordPress in this day in age that the things you don't used are being used by some other group of individuals giving those features at least a little bit of worth. But, I think a good example of what you are talking about is the search in the admin panel. Who uses that thing lol.

Hey Stan, thanks for linking to an article on my blog. I remember that day an almost clicked that link. This news about Google Labs being used for evil comes on the heels of Google Blog Search being used for evil as well. Is this where Google does the best job that it can to provide an algorithm that mimics human like behaviors to remove the offenders out of the index without using humans?

"oh-hell O’Clock" I think I've been up at this time before, many times actually. Look forward to seeing you in the chatroom.
I have still not been able to get my hands on Habari to give it a shot but it is only a matter of time. I plan on adding a section to my feed reader specifically for Habari to keep tabs on development and your blog will be one of the ones I add to that feed.
