in Pumping Gas: Let’s tell McCain why it matters on Bang the Drum
Maybe Suebob has a key to what matters: incentive to conserve on driving. For all the pristine pictures of California's coastline, what impact do noxious car emissions have? Not as immediate as an oil spill but probably as deadly over the long haul.
Now I know that's easy to say when you live in New York City with a glut of mass transit - and God bless everyone with hybrids that drastically reduce emission output - but before we personify our frustrations in politicians, we need to evaluate the whole picture and the part we all play. Heck, our tax dollars are paying to fill McCain's tank anyway. But when someone's sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on Flatbush Avenue in a giant SUV pumping out poison, I think there's enough blame to go around.
I remember the message to the older generation in the 70s was "what are you doing to the earth we are going to inherit?" But what have we become with iPods, cell phones, 100 hundred cable channels that we watch while also using a laptop to go online? We are using more energy than ever! Maybe if people rethink the size and type of vehicle they drive, or reconsider some trips, the overall picture will change.

Are these "criticisms" of Michelle Obama just payback for how some might feel about the treatment Condi Rice has received in the past? Political orientation aside, she is a strong, successful, articulate black woman who has achieved unprecedented power in American history and has had to endure red painted hands, Congressional grilling where her lack of children was brought into question, and various other insults in the name of politics. Did M. Albright suffer at the oppositions' hands like that? Is Rice's color a factor also?
Perhaps Barack's better half is right, that the political conversations today are mean spirited: I was impressed and inspired at how the Obama campaign tried to rise above petty tactics in the primaries and I tend to think that they should continue to just let the other side pop off and make themselves look like idiots. Barack seemed to have a faith in the American public and gave us more credit then some political strategists; we are much smarter than to fall for cheap smears, and a web page to counter such seems a bit like stooping to that level or giving them credence.

The problem I have with this is basic Civics - how government works: Congress declares war, not the President. This is the problem I had with Hillary's explanation for her pro-war vote: it was her job to voice reservations and question the intelligence BEFORE she voted, and let her vote reflect her true attitude about the whole affair. It was only after the fact, in the language of her campaign, that she dubbed it "George Bush's war". But the time to do her homework had already passed. And that is also the case for many other members of Congress.
This is by no means a statement in favor of the war or the present administration. But let's be real in assessing the whole system that got us into our present state of affairs.

I don't know if it's ironic, karma, or just turmoil from the universe realigning itself, but for the past several months I noticed how Democrats speak to each other on blogs the way they use to address Republicans. Isn't that a bit like burning down the house right before foreclosure?
i am a hard working, white American but call me sexist because I don't accept a candidate endorsing the other party's candidate over one of her own, referring to a heart wrenching assassination twice and alluding to it three times, deceiving the public about putting herself in peril of sniper fire, alienating African-Americans by divisive voting block tactics, publicly vilifying a former ally for endorsing her rival, and proving a poor commander-in-chief in mismanaging a "big money" campaign from day one only to lose the contest and not relinquish the stage at the expense of her opponent's good graces. And spin it all like they are the victim.
The order is rapidly changing; please get off the new road if ya can't lend a hand!
Hey - even Bob Dylan seems to know the hour that the ship comes in!

A president needs to lead and control his party. Would Bill and Hill yield their influence and control of the Democratic Party and defer to Obama? After Hillary's speech tonight, I don't see that happening, and would even consider that the mention of all her supporters as an indication that she would hold them hostage against unifying the party.
The Obama camp would have to deal with Bill and Hillary still pulling strings inside the party which would give an appearance at least, and a reality at best, of Obama being a puppet.

I have long felt that at some point we needed to move back toward a truer vision of what the Democratic party stands for at its best, but nothing good comes without some refining fire around it, which is what we are seeing.
Still, people like Harriet Christian mystify me, because they are not really thinking through the issues, living in the emotional and yes, bitter, past.
