in Why Flickr Rules Even if You Don’t Share Photos on Oracle AppsLab
That's news to me. I never realised you could do that - I've previously used http://www.sxc.hu/ for free photos, but now I know you can use Flickr to do the same (with attached conditions), I think I'll try that in future as the photos are much better. And the flickr site is rather very slick indeed.
Thanks for the tip

in Something Cool on Oracle AppsLab
I installed Ubuntu onto a spare PC at home, but the problem I've always had when tinkering with Linux is that I can't get it online, because of Linux (last try was Red Hat, before I tried Ubuntu) not being able to work with windows modems (either onboard dialup ones, or more recently, external USB modems), so I've always put Windows back on again, as having an OS that you can't get online with has always been a bit of a waste of time.
I would really like to get Linux working, but am not sure where to start. Re. the modem issue - I guess I need to just buy a modem that Linux will work with?

This is a new one for me, and yeah, it would be a moot point for switching if you can't get it online.
I haven't used a modem for years. I'll bet if you Googled your modem and Ubuntu there are how-to resources out there. Seems like the USB modem would be a good bet for current resources, or buying one that you know in advance is recognized by Ubuntu.
Good luck with that. Its worth the switch, IMHO.

in Mix Gets a Makeover on Oracle AppsLab
I can see that the site had to go with the std. Oracle look and feel, but I really liked the old Mix, which had a very contemporary look with the bold reds and nice gradient fills. I know it's the same content, but it definintely looks less visually appealing than it used to, in my opinion.

I think it's a work in progress too, meaning they will continue to tweak it over time, adding more of what the old Mix had. So, ideally, it's not set in stone, and some of the elements you liked will return.

in Do You Take Workcations? on Oracle AppsLab
I suppose it depends on how high level your job is. I like to leave it all behind, but then I am pretty junior. I like to remember the line about how easy people are to replace in a job, and if you were to die, work would replace you (nothing personal against you, I mean in general) pretty quickly, but to family and friends, the gap would be a lot harder to fill, and you would be missed a great deal... That's what makes me tick anyway - thinking that work is just work, but family is the most important thing.

Well put. I doubt work would replace me; they'd just make Anthony, Paul and Rich do more work.
You are correct though. I'll try that mantra next time.

in Word of the Day on Oracle AppsLab
Not at all technical, but I heard the 'Flight of the Conchords' the other day, and thought I'd spread the word about how great they are:

Have a look at some of their songs on youtube if you get chance. Very clever stuff - comedy songs taking the rise out of different types of music, like the Pet Shop Boys / Gangster Rap etc. etc.

Thanks for the tip. I've seen that show advertised on HBO, but never made the leap to watch or Tivo it. Not sure why. I'll have to give it a look.

Though not related to enterprise, I really like these 2 sites for the clever visual way they represent data:

in RIP Netscape Navigator on Oracle AppsLab
My first browser was Netscape. I remember using it at Birmingham University in 1994. It all seemed very strange and new back then...
