The thing is, outside the deeply concentrated SF and possibly Washington areas, is it really picking up steam? Here in Toronto, there hasn't been a wave of it yet, although it would take off if it had the right marketing.
I'm wondering if Facebook will release something similar. FB Mobile already sends your messages to your phone as texts... Hmm.
It will definitely get worse before it gets better. At this point, we know that a lot of companies envision marketing strategies that involve creating a whole new Social Network, instead of connecting with any others.
It reminds me of the big Music labels attempting to create their own 'iTunes killer', utilizing DRM and oblivious to the fact that a modern user is so averse to having to switch interfaces that they'll even change the content they consume.
