Clearly technology winners are not always about being the best, in tech it is often about who is the biggest.

Both Google and Facebook have a lot to offer in that, as an individual, I get something from them. I agree the key concerns is
1) how do you make it easy for me (don't make me keep inviting people, don't make me keep entering my bio, etc.)
2) what do you give me for my effort? In FB I get the benefit of social interaction, in Google I get really useful tools.
3) What's the "time to value" or "return on investment" for my participation.

Whatever happens with aggregation, I want to see it not just benefit the millions of "new" social networks that want to attempt their "me too" strategies but to also benefit the end user.

As an end user I want control of my own information, I want to say where I send it and how much of my data moves to each new context. If aggregation does not give me that it will cause me to go to the least common denominator with my information and that will make each of the contexts less rich and rewarding.

Re: Why Social Networks Don’t Work for Business

Personally, I think that the Wiki/Blog provide content but not context. Its the social network that gives the context for those inside the firewall. Having a wiki with no social context makes it up to me to find that wiki and that is an efficiency issue.

I agree 100% on the "trust" pretext and that inside the firewall increases the trust. Inside the firewall can also help with the social network context. By knowing where you are within the organization (who you work for, what your job is) I can use that information to help give me some context to your thoughts and opinions.

I think its the mix of all these elements that can [will] give exponential value to an organization. I do not think this is an if but a when.

Sure, it will take some time, but it will happen because the crowd will find a way. The expectations already exist for me. Once I know that there is a way to do it better I will not be satisfied going back to the more manual approach. Just as memo's are no longer a common tool in a corporation so too will distribution lists and emails be replaced by the tools of web 2.0.

Re: Why Bans Don’t Work

I was recently surprised, listening to a someone in IT [for a very large corporation], who mentioned that their big employee initiative was to add support for IM.

This was not a long time ago, this was less then a year ago, and I found myself horrified that they consider this new.

I am hopeful that IT is learning its lesson and, as you say, realizing that controlling progress by creating bans will not work and will ultimately make them look dumb.

Re: New SaaS Features? The initial connect viral adoption was high results for low investment. You got an email, you accepted the email, you sent a few invitations and the saga continued.

The other features require a bit more thinking/work on the part of users and therefore are not as top of mind. Anyway, it was fun entertainment for sure.

As far as the Techra I also had one of those and felt superior about my computing power. I'm sure I'll be tracking back to this post a bit, as I you really are covering a lot of ground here that I'd like to explore.

I also have wished for more success in KM over the years. I personally don't believe it fails due to individuals wanting to horde knowledge. I think that often it fails because it is pushed top down and has never found a way to not put a huge burden on your most strapped resources. I think a more 2.0 approach is exactly what is needed to breathe new fire into the point of KM -- more alignment between self promotion, corporate goals and knowledge capture and sharing is all good in my book.

Re: The iPhone Still Rules

Jake, any info on when iphone will have a GPS? I think that software as an industry is changing. I think this is a reflection of that. In the US we like careers that have a large monetary upside. At least when we are young and idealistic/greedy. Thus the boom of MBAs in the 80's when we were told Greed is good and the boom in CS when the dot-com era was upon us. I think that is the real force at play here.

Re: Going around, Coming around

That Pedrazzi guy is up to no good these days, or at least that's what I've heard ;-)

-Meg

Re: The Future is iPhone-tastic

I am soo looking forward to this, finally something to help with my sense of direction disability...fingers crossed for mothers day.

Re: The Emotional Nature of Software

Great day for this post as I've had to re-install and re-work a ton of applications as I "upgrade" my computer. I do nothing cool with my Tivo, I don't care about games, I still use a phone line to download data and yet it works like a dream.

I was happy to increase my storage from 40 hours and get HD (and HBO) with my last upgrade. I have said often that Tivo is the best invention of the last 20 years, in my life it is equal to the remote control and far surpasses things like wireless networking and digital cameras (which I love).

My only hope is that Tivo does whatever it takes to not go out of business. I will say, however, that we don't just do usability testing on prototypes, we also do it on the final product and attempt to adjust to what we find. Of course, not always, but at least we do try.

The problem, as I see it, was best described to me that "UE is fashion". It changes regularly, most development of complex systems just can't keep up. Before we get it built it's out of date. The real answer is to have better architectural support for regularly changing (and updating) the UI without the cost of re-doing the application. This makes it easier to adjust to changes both from user feedback and from technology innovations. One of the whole points of a SOA is to isolate the business logic to allow for more rapid and frequent iterations of the presentation layer. Not somewhere we can get overnight but I think we really are trying to set ourselves up for better success in the future.

Re: Google Does and Knows a Lot

you didn't mention how you could find google flu trends?

Re: On Browsers

have you considered posting a big link on the top when someone is on IE 6 saying "hey does this look like crap, upgrade your browser here (with link of course) and it will be lots better".
