in On Browsers on Oracle AppsLab
have you considered posting a big link on the top when someone is on IE 6 saying "hey does this look like crap, upgrade your browser here (with link of course) and it will be lots better". Most of us don't upgrade b/c a) we don't realize we need to and b) if we figure out we need to we are not sure what/where to go and c) we are lazy
Seems to me you could solve a and b and even some of c with this approach.

in “Looks Good, Works Well” on Oracle AppsLab
well I'm certainly not going to defend ERP applications and their (our) usability track record. I will say, however, that we don't just do usability testing on prototypes, we also do it on the final product and attempt to adjust to what we find. Of course, not always, but at least we do try.
The problem, as I see it, was best described to me that "UE is fashion". It changes regularly, most development of complex systems just can't keep up. Before we get it built it's out of date. The real answer is to have better architectural support for regularly changing (and updating) the UI without the cost of re-doing the application. This makes it easier to adjust to changes both from user feedback and from technology innovations. One of the whole points of a SOA is to isolate the business logic to allow for more rapid and frequent iterations of the presentation layer. Not somewhere we can get overnight but I think we really are trying to set ourselves up for better success in the future.

Love Love Love my Tivo. Had a series2, upgraded to HD with the lifetime warranty. I do nothing cool with my Tivo, I don't care about games, I still use a phone line to download data and yet it works like a dream.
I was happy to increase my storage from 40 hours and get HD (and HBO) with my last upgrade. I have said often that Tivo is the best invention of the last 20 years, in my life it is equal to the remote control and far surpasses things like wireless networking and digital cameras (which I love).
My only hope is that Tivo does whatever it takes to not go out of business. I want them to survive. I don't care about the Pizza but the Netflix integration sounds awesome to me. If Tivo doesn't make it I will have regrets similar to my loss of WebVan.

Spoken like a true TiVo lover. I'm with you on all points, and as I mention above, I wish I'd jumped on the lifetime service transfer to the HD box last year.
Your point about the best invention of the last 20 years is interesting. Might have to put that to a vote.
Ha, WebVan reference, very nice. TiVo was on shaky ground for a while there, but I think they'll make it, possibly acquisition bait. They've proven the DVR market and still are ahead of the curve.

Excellent post. I believe that a lot of HR departments would do well to pick one (and only one) thing to focus on and give it time to actually yield results. Seems often companies like the starting of things but not the on going nurturing.

In Talent we now have a new product code "HRT" and those of us [ahem] wiser females find this a funny play on Hormone Replacement Therapy. We didn't do this on purpose but did add the joke after the fact.

in The Emotional Nature of Software on Oracle AppsLab
Great day for this post as I've had to re-install and re-work a ton of applications as I "upgrade" my computer. The price of progress is really often too high for me to cope and right now I am totally frustrated as nothing is working correctly [yet].

in DIY Development on Oracle AppsLab
Jake, Interesting thoughts on this one for me as 1) I don't have a CS degree and somehow manage to be in development and 2) I was just talking with my dad last week mentioning that I don't see this as a career path that my children will have available to them, at least not the way it was for me.
I think your point about US being DIY oriented is valid but not the whole point. I think that software as an industry is changing. I think this is a reflection of that. In the US we like careers that have a large monetary upside. At least when we are young and idealistic/greedy. Thus the boom of MBAs in the 80's when we were told Greed is good and the boom in CS when the dot-com era was upon us. I think that is the real force at play here.

in Why Product Development Should Blog on Oracle AppsLab
Obviously we are sold on the value of development blogging in Talent. As for finding time, I think I might have personally crossed a line when I was organizing my thoughts for my next blog entry at 3am on Friday morning. Not only was the time just silly, I was only awake because I was burning up with a fever and knew I had to take some tylenol to be up at 5:30am for my youngest to have surgery the next day.
Thanks again Jake for bringing us all on this journey.

The irony. Style the message and throw even more effort down the IE6 sinkhole, or suck up the annoyance of an ugly message. Tougher than it sounds.
