If you guys want, I can reach out to some of my usability contractor contacts, if you want to get any user feedback (in detail) before you start coding. Otherwise, keep up the great work.

Re: What Are Your Five Feeds?

• MSNBC.com’s US News – Watching where the economy goes let’s us see trends relevant to enterprise applications. What are the emerging sectors? What sectors are in slow-growth modes?
• Techcrunch.com – For the geek in me.
• UXmatters.com – Jim Nieters – now at Yahoo – writes pieces for this one. That’s how I found it. Now I just like it.
• User-experience-design.com – I’m still waiting to see if I stick with this one.
• Richard Anderson’s Blog ‘Riander Blog’ – I like Richard’s blog because he layers on design management conversations.

Re: http://theappslab.com/2008/12/04/what-makes-ui-good/

Hey Jake,

As always an interesting read!

I would actually argue that the problem you faced in finding and using the power user features was due to dropping half of the user experience ball. Good UI is both art and science...Apple's got the art part for sure.

Based on the quote you provide above "Rather than survey a bunch of users on every decision..." ... sounds like the may have just skipped talking to a user constituency (this would be the science part) - power users.

It is completely possible to design both for novice or occasional users + power users at the same time. The profession calls is progressive disclosure - showing you only what you need to know, but allowing you to easily discover the power feature components.

That's just my $.02. (maybe that should Euros?)

- Misha
