Some comparison searches:
Froogle:

Ebay:

Riya does better and the likeness search is nice. Wish it was a wee bit faster (Google spoiled).

in Amazon EC2 on Life is grand
I don't know if EC2 is all that cheap. Compare with godaddy (random host):
Deluxe Dedicated Server (closest to amazon's server):
500GB bandwidth + 240GB disk = $150/mo
S3 costs would be 500 * 0.2 + 240 * 0.15 = $136
EC2 costs would be $0.10 * 30 * 24 = $72
Total cost = $208/mo
And Godaddy is one of the more expensive dedicated servers. I wouldn't go to amazon for the price, but for the quickness, customizability, and scalability. Which are probably the most important aspects of hosting.

If there's that much video, and the "expensive" portion of compression is in terms of CPU, why not buy a few more computers and do it in parallel?
Seems like the right kind of expense to pay for if you're going to become a video company.
