in The More We Connect, The More We Lose Touch on danny brown - social media pr and marketing
Hi Danny - I know just what you mean. When you asked about upgrade issues earlier today I actually felt guilty that I couldn't offer more help :-) I really wanted to but I've reached a point where I can't offer free help to everyone even if I really really like that person. I'm not saying you were asking for anything - I voluntarily answered your questions but I still felt like I should be doing more. Maybe it can be hard to be connected to so many people when you're a kind and giving person ...?

Danny No need for guilt, Kim, I didn't mean it to come over as "Help me now!!" Damn WordPress and silly conflicts... ;-)

Perhaps if you're open it can be more difficult. As you say, sometimes you really don't want to say no or offer a reason for conflict, but I guess that sometimes needs to happen to keep the long-term peace?

Most of my clients are repeat ones. And you know how I get them to return? By hanging up on them when they call me. Sheesh - unbelievable.

in Virtual Stalking - A Real World Problem for Social Media on danny brown - social media pr and marketing
I believe the blocking feature on twitter is effective. It is my understanding that if enough users block the same account it triggers a review by twitter. Now I believe this is uses as an anti-spam measure but it seems that it would also work against stalkers.

I do not believe the answer is becoming less open. That causes bad to win over good and that is never the ideal solution.

Danny The blocking option is definitely effective. I'm just curious how many times someone has to be blocked before Twitter investigates, while in the meantime the abuser or harasser continues to bombard people. Sometimes they seem really slow to react.

in Would You Trust Google With Twitter? on danny brown - social media pr and marketing
I don't want google to have anything to do with twitter. I don't hate google but they own too many of the tools we use on a daily basis. And Danny raises a very valid point - they don't have adequate customer service for the size of the company - maybe this is because most of us use their tools for free.

Some days when I'm feeling paranoid-ish I think that in the near future every aspect of our lives will be brought to us by google - think of all the data they own on us already - might even be more than what the govt. has.

in When Was The Last Time... on danny brown - social media pr and marketing
That's a good question ... I'm not sure. I think it does. I've become much more confident since I started my site and in meeting different people online, which has made me more open offline. But their have been personal factors that have also contributed to this.

I have a feeling that many of use connecting online are introverts who are not comfortable connecting in person. I know I am much more outgoing online that I am face to face.

Danny Do you find that gaining more confidence online transfers itself to your offline settings, Kim?

in Fear Factor on danny brown - social media pr and marketing
I think if we realize that the unknown, uncertainty and change are the only constants in life than we will stop being fearful. Accept what happens and then make a plan to move forward.

If two years ago, someone had told me about all the changes that would occur in my life, I would have laughed and thought it was ridiculous. But I got upset, made a plan and then got through it. I believe that the adversity has made me a stronger and more confident person.

Danny Hindsight is a wonderful thing, isn't it Kim? Sometimes it's what makes me wonder about people saying they'd change things in their lives if they had a second chance. If it's these things (good and bad) that make us who we are, isn't it being counter-active if we wish them to change?

I'm glad you posted this Danny. Recently I've become a little annoyed with all of the shoulds and should nots about twitter going through my stream. I'm also not particularly interested in how people select their followers or organize their groups in tweetdeck. Well, maybe generally but not in great detail.

I liked the video post - it makes me feel like I "know" you better :-)

The point about language is true in so many areas. When I write articles about WordPress code or talk to clients about customizations, I try to tailor the language to their skill level. If someone doesn't know what I'm talking about, I'm unable to help them.

Your kitty isn't that much of a whore - she wouldn't even show her face ;-)

Danny Brown I actually tried panning round to him (he's a boy) but then he jumped off, so you could be right ;-)

It is a matter of tailoring to the audience. I guess the main problem online is that we don't always know what audience there is. There's no guarantee that a blog reader is up-to-speed with niche words, or a new subscriber is interested in the technical side of things, more the theory.

As Lizz mentioned, keeping it simpler often reaps the better rewards - then your whole audience is involved.

Fine line, for sure. :)

in What's Your Voice | danny brown on danny brown - social media pr and marketing
Many months ago I had a bit of a crisis on my blog because I felt I wasn't blogging with my real voice. The blog is much more professional that I am and doesn't contain any cursing ;-) I've learned over time to write more like I speak - it's more conversational and sometimes snarky, although I still don't curse. Umm ... what's my point? Oh yeah - I wish I had read a post like this when I had that mini-crisis.

I don't know if it's a habit for me but it's something I've worked on for about 10 years. I think my personality tends to be darker and more cynical - but I'm actually content with that. I do like to laugh though ...

in How I Use Twitter at Volume on Chris Brogan
I've found that once I reached about 300 followers/following I had to use Tweetdeck to manage Twitter. I have 3 groups and a search running all of the time. And I completely agree about search - it's the best way to find information and people.

Before the numbers grew I would keep track of everything - in the morning I would go back and read the tweets that I had missed overnight. There's no way I could do that now or else Twitter would turn into a full time job.

Thanks for this article.

I just want to say that Jacob practices what he is recommending. He has responded to me every time I have contacted him - on twitter, via his blog, etc. And not only is Jacob responsive but once he builds up a relationship with you he often starts spreading the good word about you too. So, listen to what he is saying - he totally knows what he's talking about :-)

in 35 Tips for getting started with social media « My Thoughts On Social Media on Social Media Marketing Strategies
After reading this article today I did some research on permalink structure but did not come up with a definitive answer. I do use yoast.com for a lot of my WordPress information and in one of his SEO articles he recommended only using the post name. But I am not clear as to why it would be better - I should probably ask him. There is a plugin you can use if you do decide to change your permalink structure - I installed it when I changed mine and didn't have a single problem. This is the plugin http://urbangiraffe.com/plugins/redirection/ and if you are interested in the yoast article it is http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/

Mike - Wow! You've covered it all. It actually seems exhausting to me :-)

I agree with Mark that there are differing views on permalinks. I actually prefer to remove the date from mine and use only the post title.

And I was really happy to see your mention of diigo. While I still prefer delicious, diigo does allow you to bookmark to all three sites like you mentioned. When I first started doing that it was more for bookmark insurance - if one site disappeared my bookmarks would still exist somewhere else. Only later did I think of the social aspect of it.

I am, however, often hesitant to share my own stuff. You suggested sharing your own content in Google reader. Is that really an acceptable practice?

On a side note, I am slowly trying to spend more time with friendfeed :-)

Hi Daniel - I found you site through problogger's social experiment. I'm always intrigued by the list of best plugins and enjoy seeing what others think are the best.

I have a question about Comment Relish - does it send an email every time someone comments? If so, can it be set to email less frequently? I ask because I visit one site and every time I comment I get an email. It gets annoying because they say the exact same thing and I end up deleting them w/out even reading.

Mike,

I just discovered your site yesterday and will have to go through your friendfeed posts. I have tried and tried to use friendfeed more but it just hasn't been for me so far.

Like you, I've had many blogs through the years but they have mostly been casual things - links to funny sites, a site for my daughter. My current blog was started about the same time as yours and I have taken it a lot more seriously. And it's been amazing to meet interesting people, build a community and interact. Though it's been a lot more work than I originally anticipated.

I'm glad the Social Media Marketing project introduced us to each other.
