Ah, you are right, it does cost a bit more than $700 to buy all 3 items. I didn't do my research on PDA prices before I posted; I had incorrectly estimated a PDA to be around $250, a PSP to be $250 and a iPod to be $300 which at $800 total would be in the ballpark of the Archos.

Looking around at PDAs though, it does seem that they are quite expensive... the HP hx4700 starts at $599! :O

Hmm... I wonder if any of my Microsoftie friends knows someone on the shell team (or the Client UX team I hear they're called now).

Maybe we'll have to wait for Mozilla's version of a file explorer to come out; or maybe OpenOffice will implement tabs or something? :)

Hi Chris!

You're exactly right on a few points. If you want to watch soaps and play some UT2004 in the mid-mornings that's totally fine. Everyone at Plaxo is evaluated based on the results they deliver. If you can get stuff done, we won't mind if you need to catch up on General Hospital or frag a few buddies in the process.

If you can actually deliver on the following, I'm sure we'd love to have you on the team:

"When I’m done, your own programmers won’t recognize their app’s. And you can’t even begin to describe the kind of orgasmic rush I get when I stump a programmer with an obscure bug, or when I insist he move a box 2 pixels to the left because the gradient behind it is covered up too much."

We definitely need people who know how to find both obscure and "fit & finish" bugs.

Tell you what, if you can deliver on this stuff, send me your resume and we'll get you through the system :)

Hi Chris - The main difference is that Google has done a fantastic job with the marketing of their "do no evil" mantra. However, at the core, there is little difference between Google and Microsoft.

First and foremost, there is no "do evil for maximum profit" mantra at Microsoft. As a matter of fact, product design decisions at Microsoft hold the user in the highest regard. And at the end of the day, "evil" is a subjective term anyways. For the record: "Evil," says Google CEO Eric Schmidt, "is what Sergey says is evil." (from wired)

Did the fact that 5/6 of the population can't tell the difference between an ad and a search result spur any changes at Google? Not that I can tell. Designing your product so that people think ads are search results? Can you give me a definition of "evil" please?

Next, the same types of people work at both companies. These are people who look to further technology to improve user experiences. Don't forget that there is now a pretty decent sized migration from Microsoft to Google. Why? Because the companies have the same core of technical innovation and the perception is that Google is innovating faster. That draws the exact same people to both companies.

Finally, at the end of the day, the reason Microsoft is seen as evil is because they leveraged their monopoly to crush their competitors. We'll see if Google does the same. Now that Google is public, I think they'd be hard pressed NOT to leverage their upper hand. After all, they've got shareholders to answer to too.

Especially with at-will employment nowadays, if you're paranoid about losing your job then you better make sure you're squeaky clean all the time.

Then again... maybe you don't care so much about your job and it's more important to you that you be yourself :)

I think there are good ideas about this in Vista; by default users are asked to confirm when they are about to take system actions; similar to the dialog that pops up on Mac (or needing to "sudo" in *nix environments).

However, it is quite annoying when Windows Defender gets a bit too ambitious and starts making you confirm everytime you want to just open Control Panel... I hope they find the right balance before Vista goes Beta 2 :)
