in On drunk driving on In pursuit of The Idea
Why would it be a problem to say to someone that he should drive drunk?

Other than that I agree wholeheartedly.

in rev=”canonical” and extra burden on services on In pursuit of The Idea
ArsTechnica has reL=canonical (not reV) that points to page, which it should, if this is canonical URL. It also has rev="alternate short_url" that means same as rev=canonical. So what they do is quite right.

There is also a proposal how provide this information through HTTP HEAD requests, which would further alleviate a problem that really doesn't exist.

What I don't understand in all this madness is why is everyone trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist and when has Twitter become a necessary part of Internet infrastructure?

I should probably write my own post about this...

Jure Cuhalev Thanks Marko, I've updated the blog entry.

While Twitter isn't part of infrastructure I believe that we're worried about historical data in proprietary silos.

in Links are currency of the web on In pursuit of The Idea
Well, contrary to popular notion I don't blog for attention. Apart from linking to my site on my profile pages I do next to nothing to actually increase its popularity. I admit I used to care, but I've been writing without thinking of anybody else for a while now.

I'm too lazy to look up the paper, but at WWW2007 conference it was clearly shown that spam sites do get linked to by non-spam ones. If people have such a hard time distinguishing spam, it's hard to imagine that you couldn't game this system too and in fact people do.

However. it does seem this is the best idea we came up with so far.

in Nature Or Nurture In Social Networking on /Message
Great post Stowe, but I have a minor nitpick. Some of us make resolutions not because we thought it would improve our happiness, but because we think changing ourselves in certain ways would make us better people.

Happiness might be externally conditioned, but I simply refuse to accept that who I am and what kind of person I am is not mostly defined by what I do. And that is something I can at least somewhat control.

stoweboyd And I bet that belief is firmly grounded in the sort of people you have surrounded yourself with. (wink)

fogbank Doing anything not aimed at making us happier is pointless. Happiness is the only ultimate goal worth pursuing; becoming better persons in our eyes is just a means to that end.

I find all prototyping tools I found so far lacking in one way or other. But worst is probably still better than none.

You did notice that first one isn't a Nike ad, right? :)

Jure Cuhalev I did notice it after posting this already. I'll give an excuse for an answer and say that I think it's Nike Ad worthy ;)

in Is Pepsi confused about its branding? on In pursuit of The Idea
Most companies I can think of do this fairly regularly, often with just small touches. So I don't think Pepsi is special when it comes to this.

I'm neither designer nor brand specialist, so I can't judge on how they execute.

in How do they deal with Time Zones on sea cruises? on In pursuit of The Idea
It's also easier in a way that sea cruises are much slower, which makes it much easier to adapt to new timezone.

in TextMate tip: Making single apostrophes double on In pursuit of The Idea
Coding standards by whom? The only relevant standard is the one agreed upon by your team.

And it's not just me saying that. It's also Yahoo on @media Ajax ;)

Still, nice tip for those who'd like that.

WTF? It doesn't, since there's no need to. " works just fine everywhere in Javascript including jQuery.

Dear god, that makes no sense. Of course I meant should instead of shouldn't.

What's a best community? Best by which metric?

As to the last paragraph, it very much depends on the purpose and goal of the website. MySpace is unsuable and repulsive to me, which is fine, but it pretty much means that a website, that would want to target me or people like me, shouldn't be significantly different than MySpace.

Congratulations. I wish I could go too, since given chance, I'd move to Stockholm in a heartbeat.
