in HSBC snubs startups - Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist on Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist
That is truely bizarre. I got the worng end of the stick from Rob lochs tweets. Thought it was loans or something you couldn't get, but not being able to open an account is MAD.
So as it stands, you might get investment in the UK but can't open an account to put it in, you can open an account in Ireland but can't get investment. :P
BTW: First video post was quite good actually.

in TechLudd 1, Walshie 0. More importantly, Ireland wins - Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist on Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist
Paul, you're right to say that it's not about individuals. Which is why I've tried to stay out of the way as much as possible, while I am nominally "the organiser" a lot of the ideas and organisation came from many others. What I did was bring them all together and implement the results. Similarly I'm bored of the anti-Paul Walsh brigade, personal insults are unproductive to say the least.
When the time is right I'll take you up on the offer of pointing people at bench'd. :)
As for you attending events anyone can come anytime you don't need an invite from me. So come along whenever you like.
I also agree about the coverage of events and news regarding startups in Ireland. I will try and get some larger debate about this going on TechLudd as per your suggestion. I'll probably see you tomorrow night anyway so we can chat then.

in Forget mobile predictions for 2008, lets focus on the basics - Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist on Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist
Absolutely agree Paul. But the big question I have is how long is it going to take? I don't think this will be really in the main stream for a couple of years. Tariffs as you rightly say will be the major hurdle there.
While I think it is essential to build your web service with mobile in mind the fact that there are so many platforms is "unhelpful" to use subtle understatement. Meebo for instance only developed for the iphone, basically for this exact reason, too much development for too little value. It's difficult to justify that extra development cost.
When there are some broadly accepted standards then this will be something EVERY web service will adapt to because it makes sense. To steal a phrase from Niall Larkin of RelevantM the phone is the social tool of first resort. It behooves any service to be on it. Roll on Android and Apple is right...

I think you're spot on here Paul.
SO many people are talkin about how mobile will be "the next big thing" and investors asking "what are your plans for mobile services?"
How can a new web service seriously consider developing for mobile considering the myriad browsers and operating systems. Cost of development is too high to make it worth the investment when you don't even know if it'll work. As you rightly point out if we can't get things like sending photos right we're probably a couple of years off the kind of internet phone usage people are talking about. Make it work well first...

Seeing as your asking..
I think the biggest development in Social Networks will be that people will stop talking about the "portability of their social graph" (which is patently ridiculous I'll be posting about that tomorrow). They'll realise that the real breaking down of walled gardens will be about connecting to your social graph from the application you want to use which makes the whole idea of portability redundant...

@marcus Absolutely all suggestions (even a name change) are open. This is just what has come from the discussions so far. So if people prefer a total revamp then they shall have it. Stick it in the Wiki.

@conor Just to be clear I have no issue with web2ireland at all. I was unaware they had intentions of running an event early next year and most certainly didn't snub them. I would be only delighted to help out an event of this sort run by we2ireland but there isn't one. It's the regularity of the event which I think is important.
I don't "expect" anyone to "line in" at all. The idea is - the event is on come if you want. The event isn't modeled on the web2ireland event as I've said elsewhere it's modeled on meetups elsewhere. As the web2ireland event is not regular the idea is to have something monthly. If there isn't support for it that'll be obvious over time.

Fergus did contact me via my post and I misread it and thought event they were running in Q1 was a "barcamp" (apologies). I did ask when he was thinking of having it etc. but no date has been set.
The idea of TechLudd is that it is monthly. That is to say there will be some kind informal medium sized event with some strusture every month from now on. It doesn't have to be huge it just has to start... What it becomes is up to those involved.

@conor As there was a "demobar" event at the FOWA roadtrip event this phrase accidentally slid into my vernacular and was used accidentally. The error has been corrected as per Fergus.

Look guys I have no intention here of treading on toes. If people don't want this or want to go to it. That's fine it is most certainly not my intention to factionalise anything. I will point out that this is the first time anyone has suggested this is not a good idea, which is surprising considering the amount of people who were aware of it.
I am dissappointed those who seem to have a huge problem with this could not have said so directly to me before now. It is unfortunate to say the least...

I think it's great that you've opened this debate. If this event can be run under another banner and be successful I have no problem with that. People could have suggested that anytime, no one did though. Why not jump on board and make it better yourself...

Paul, The first person I consulted when i started this was Damien actually. I've been updating him on what's going on throughout. It's unfortunate that you didn't ask me that privately first. The website, group and even the name, was a starting point. Thankfully this morning a helpful professional webdesigner has suggested a much better design logo etc. and I changed it back to default til it's done (which should be by the end of the holidays. If you'd said any of this privately I would have taken on board your opinion and made the changes).

in The next step in Digg clones (Scripting News) on Scripting News
I agree absolutely with this idea. I started Luddity about a month ago as a way of keeping up to date with tech news by using the idea that the group of people I know in the tech community in Ireland all live in different spaces and thus would bring the news that they are interested in and the community could vote on it's relevance etc. I for instance am focused on social networking and online media. Another friend is working with mobile technology. I'm interested in what's going on in that space but can't track everything. This way we all benefit from a community with a certain level of expertise. I reckoned it could work with a communtiy of less than a hundred. Good luck with it anyway as I believe you're on to something. But I thought of it first... LOL
