Wow, thanks for the great analysis of Powerset's situation.

As the only product manager/marketing guy here, you made me smile :)

Thanks for the kudos and for recognizing all of the hard work we've put into our user interface. It takes great designers (Toby & Ian), a great development team, great technology, and lots of user feedback to get a solid interface the first time around.

in Isn't this a little... dubious? - ewan.to on ewan.to comments
The goal is to encourage people to play with a feature that they might have otherwise missed. And also as a way to get rid of the boatload of shirts from our launch party that we have left-over =)

ewan Hi Mark, thanks for the response.

I'm sure the intentions are good (I hadn't seen Factz before), which is what matters to me, but if you posted that text up on the Payperpost marketplace with a $1 price tag then I don't think it would look out far of place.

Watch out for those Catholics! Oddly enough, the sentence from which it's derived is perfectly valid :)

Richard Bradshaw Yeah, not many of these Factz are actually incorrect, at least one does have the word "not" in the sentence though. This doesn't seem to be picked up by powerset, but it has pretty good go at trying to understand the content.

in Powerset Launches. Verdict: Meh. on 20bits
Thanks for the detailed write up. We have a few UofC grads here too.

I think you missed two key parts of Powerset, though. First, when you type in a regular topical query, Powerset extracts Factz from across Wikipedia. This is a unique feature enabled by our semantic processing that ya just can't get in a regular keyword engine. Also, take a look at our enhanced Wikipedia pages. Note that we also have Factz on the page, which often provide a concise summary of the topic.

I signed up for your KallOut beta. I want an invite =)

in Five Reasons I’m Not Going Gaga Over Powerset on Marketing Pilgrim
1) Ask was not processing every sentence from every document. The amount of processing power required for Powerset to analyze each sentence just wasn't available back in the days when Ask first launched.
2) Powerset adds value across the query spectrum. For a topic keyword search like "henry viii", we show Factz gathered about Henry VIII from across Wikipedia.
3) Wikipedia is very high value content and Powerset includes lots of tools for discovery and summarization. Note the features we have on our enhanced Wikipedia articles, like "Show Factz"
4) Powerset has built on the IP licensed from PARC and now has a healthy portfolio of our own IP
5) It's not just about the query: it's about features enabled by our understanding of the text.

The best way to experience Powerset is to try out the product yourself. Have fun and I look forward to your reaction.

To play that at the end of a game is a real coup.

I have a friend who is an incredible Scrabble player. One of the only times I ever successfully challenged him was when he played "Google." I thought it was funny that he didn't realize that it was a bastardization of the actual spelling (and Barney Google's last name).

Anyway, when are you coming for a demo of Powerset? =)
