in Why You Won’t Make any Money With Social Media on Jacob Morgan on Social Media, Technology, Marketing, and Life
People do business with those they know, like, and trust. Social media is one of a number of tools that can help cultivate relationships, but you're right. social media doesn't make money. People working with people create money.

in Questions and Controversy on Jacob Morgan on Social Media, Technology, Marketing, and Life
The great thing about blogging is that it allows bloggers to ask questions from their customers (readers). It's a two way communication and both parties can learn from the process unlike traditional marketing communication.
Controversy is also a good thing because it stimulates conversation and learning.

in Mixing Traditional Media With Social Media on Jacob Morgan on Social Media, Technology, Marketing, and Life
Advertise on network television in the seventies and you'll probably reach most of the market. Advertise today on network television alone and you may miss half the market due to the number of choices available for today's consumers.
That's a good way to look at traditional and social media. They're not mutually exclusive and both should be part of an overall business strategy. Ignore social media and lose potential prospects, but focus exclusively on social media will likely miss a lot of prospects as well.

they definitely should be a part of an overall business strategy but as of now, they are fighting over the same budget.
thanks for the comment john!

in Bob- The Next Chapter on Chris Brogan
Bob's in a tough situation. His relationship with his boss appears to be in shambles and I doubt it can be mended. The boss doesn't want to listen to Bob's ideas and has cut off lines of communication with other areas of the company.
Bob must be miserable and I think it's probably time for him to finding another company where he'd make a better fit.

in Shut Up- You're Helping the Customer! on Chris Brogan
Poor Bob! He's in a tough situation as a social media advocate working at a place where the culture does not share his views.
I would recommend he put out feelers and expand his personal network. People should always be growing their networks because no few jobs offer lifetime guarantees.
In the meantime,if I were Bob, I'd focus on building internal relationships within the organization and begin to develop some alliances. Management feels that conversing with the customer online is dangerous. He may never be able to change this, but understanding why they feel this way would be a good place to start.

Blogging from the woods of VT with an iphone? That is pretty cool. You can work anywhere these days and the iphone takes pretty cool pictures based on the photo in this post. Looks like I'm going to be investing in an iphone. Nice post. I look forward to seeing more potential applications with the iphone.

in Using Social Media and SEO Together, Why? on Jacob Morgan on Social Media, Technology, Marketing, and Life
Jacob - Good post as always. Perhaps it's because your last name is Morgan and your girlfriend's name is Sullivan. Great minds think alike. =)
Social media and SEO are not mutually exclusive in my opinion. SEO is important for people to know who you are. It helps when looking for new business or new employment. Companies now go to Google when they want to learn more about a candidate they interview for employment.
Here's an SEO tip - Read and make comments to great blogs like this one. Include your contact information and see your name rise to the top of Google. It probably won't happen overnight, but it will happen if you keep doing it regularly.
Finally, I love your point on Social Media being important in relationship building. People who have friends are much more successful than people who don't.

morgan sullivan, can't go wrong with that :)
the seo tip only applies in certain cases, the links on this page from disqus are nofollowed and repeating the same link won't help much. in my opinion the best thing to do on blog posts is to not leave a link because people appreciate the content more. leaving links everywhere shows a little bit of a hidden agenda. usually if users find the content valuable they can just click on ur name and be taken right to your site.
i actually discourage people from leaving a lot of links in the comments on this blog because it allows for a focus on content, otherwise it just becomes like a giant advertising and linking site!
you obviously take the time to write well thought out responses which is much appreciated.
thanks for reading and commenting

in Why You Need a Social Media Marketing Department on Jacob Morgan on Social Media, Technology, Marketing, and Life
Jacob - you make a compelling case for companies to have a department dedicated to social media. Based on our recent survey of construction and real estate companies, few companies in those industries have plans to employ someone focused exclusively on social media.
I believe that implementing social media has to start at the top. It should be in alignment with the companies' overall strategy.

hey john,
it's unfortunate that these companies are not even planning to use some sort of social media strategies to reach out and build relationships with their users. definitely agree that social media needs to align with the company strategy and business objectives, its more then just creating a blog. if you know of any co's that need social media help, let me know :)

in Target Marketing on Chris Brogan
This post hits home on the purpose of target marketing which sometimes gets lost. Building a successful business is about building relationships. Target marketing can help because it allows companies to focus on specific people or companies and develop relationships with them. since it's impossible to be an expertfor everyone or at everything, narrowing your focus and building relationships with few is much more effective than marketing to the masses.

This is important information for anyone interested in using social media for marketing purposes. It's not a sprint. It's a marathon and requires patience. I'm not sure how many people understand this including the people working in the industries we serve (real estate and construction).
How many people set up a blog and give up six weeks later because they perceive that nobody is reading it? Anything worhwhile takes a commitment of time and effort.

howdy john,
it's definitely a marathon, a never ending marathon that build up the longer you are in it. i have seen a lot of blogs that have just been abandoned because they aren't getting the traffic levels they desire, it's ok, i don't feel bad for them, let them die off. if you aren't willing to work hard (like yours truly) then you don't deserve an audience!

in Actually WATCH These Videos on Chris Brogan
These videos are well done. They're short, easy to understand and deliver great messages. Here is what I got from them:
Go beyond simply friending when connecting with people on the Internet - great advice. How many people connect on LinkedIn and never speak to each other again?
Leadership - Hire people you can trust and emplower them to do their job. "Let them be their own boss."
Decency - Personally, I've found clients to be very forgiving when mistakes are madee provided we own up to them, are honest, and want to do the right thing.
Nobody cares about you - great advice for marketers and managers. People come to work to get value for them. They buy products because they want those products to "benefit" them. Want to get people to visit your web site? Don't write about how great you are. Instead, write about what you can do to benefit them.

in The Big Risk for Corporate Trust Agents on Chris Brogan
Everyone should develop a personal brand. I remember people I knew in the early nineties getting layed off from their jobs having no marketable skills. It was ugly.
Spending many years with one company and having no back-up plan is dangerous. Companies can get into trouble quickly and when they do, you can find yourself on the wrong side of the door. Did anyone think Lehman or Washington Mutual would go under? Many of their employees probably didn't think so either.

in Guest Post- On Being Shy on Chris Brogan
There is a lot of great information in this post. One thing that has worked for me personally in these types of questions include having a couple of open-ended questions focused on the other party. This requires the person to talk about themselves and they end up doing the work which makes it easier for shy people like myself.
The next key is to listen and use paraphrasing when necessary to make sure you understand the message being communicated. If you're doing more listening than talking in these settings, chances are you're doing a good job at relationship building.
