In addition, the Japanese market is mainly for RPGs and Fighter games. Both usually with highly stylzed art and Japanese references.

X-box doesn't have those, at all. In addition, the few games they do have are very American-centric.

Its nice. But I don't know how many people are nice. I try, but I don't have a lot of money. As a result, I won't download the book because I don't want to feel guilty for not paying for it.

OTOH, I donated to PJG when I used it, and I may still have a static one setup for even when I don't. ;-)

I think that there should be some sort of code to only allow X number of views. I just don't trust people. Especially when it comes to the internet. Too many people believe everything should be free for them. Unless its something that they want to get paid for.

Sigh.

I don't think the e-books/mags/novels are that great of an idea or a great market right now. Most of the stuff (not all, of course) that I have seen online is stuff that could not be sold to a "real" market (i.e. paper mag or publishing house). Its like vanity press, only cheaper for the author.

I hope the novel is good, however. There must always be pioneers.

Gossip, even though I've already left the community, I feel for you. I confess, I still visit PJG occasionally just to see what's going on. It was the first place I checked for anything important, and the first place I posted when I was PR for OSR. You made a great site, kept it up, and made the community what it is today.

But I also understand your reasons for leaving. Completely and utterly. I got burnt out way before you did, but I do understand. I also know this must be harder for you than any of us can understand becuase you've held on for so long and given so much of yourself to this community.

Perhaps the idea of letting someone else take over your baby is feasible. But I also know it is most likely not.

Congrats on two years of great work, service, and love. We respect you and your decision.

But don't take g-blog with you!!!! ;-)

I'm using IE 6.0, and I'm seeing a funny shading. On the comments box, its only at the top and a light blue/grey line.

When writing an entry, however, the shading appears both at the top and on the left side. So much so that my first letter is either to left of or in the middle of the line, depending on the width of the letter.

Not anything major, but not as finished as a look as I prefer.

The shading on the top is fine, but the one on the side to me is annoying. It gets in the way of the text. Can it be moved closer to the edge, as the top shading is?

I wonder where they got the DNA from, and how they know it is complete. Especially since 65 years ago we barely knew what DNA was. Ah well. It will be interesting to see how this develops. I wonder if anything has been cloned from DNA only. Most stuff is cloned from complete cells...

I was wondering if there was another kind of person you could add. For instance, there is a user who's blog I read for the interesting discussions, but I wouldn't consider him/her a "friend" per se. I know that putting the user as friend would accomplish the quick fix of being able to easily access the blog, but it would be an untruth as far as the connection is concerned. So, kinda like an entry watch but for a user. If you think I'm being a twit tell me and I'll continue to do what I already do.

I think G-blog is great the way it is. Sure, I wouldn't mind having titles for all the posts, but I don't think its necessary or that everyone wants them. So I do them in bold at the top of my entries.

I certainly don't need things like dancing faces, etc.

I had one realtionship where it was a problem. Becuase he left it laying aorund and was constantly watching it. So I was not happy becuase I felt like I was being ignored in favor of porn.

Okay, I do feel for the men and women (woman?) who died.

But it was less than 10 people. Compared to a plane crash or a train accident or 9/11, that's nothing.

But it will slow down the space program. It will have us fall further behind. If there is even a HINT that terrorists had something to do with this, the funding from the space program will be funnelled to the "war on terrorism."

I am more pissed that we will be held back than I am upset that those brave people lost their lives chasing and accomplishing their dreams. They did more in their lives than most of us, and their death will only serve to prevent and postphone others who have that same dream.

Nice. I like it. What is the rating based on? And how are the titles decided? None of the titles were wrong, but some left out the game name because they chose a part of the text that didn't include it, which makes it hard for scanning.

NOTE: Never looked at Google News, so I'm not sure how it compares.

Mmm... Read Ender's Game for the first time about a year.

Have followed up with all the Ender's Books (Speaker of the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind) and some of the Bean Books (Ender's Shadow and Shawdow of the Hegemon. Have yet to buy and read Shadow Puppets).

The sequels are very, very, very different than the first book. I loved Ender's Game and I enjoyed Speaker for the Dead for a very different set of reasons.

I'd really like to reflect and ponder about it, but the truth is, I have no time. And when I have the time, I don't feel like blogging. But more on that later, too.

Replace blogging with writing and you have me. Must get out of that habit.

Hrmm... just got a little funny behavior.

I commented on FanBoy's blog, which according to the new comments tracker says there is stuff I haven't seen and lists the comment as #5. However, when I go to the site there are only 3 comments. And my new one wasn't there. I did a hard refresh. Nope. I click back to comment tracker, still shows one new comment on the thread.

Okay, I now went back and checked (1 min to 1.5 min) and both new comments were there.

I just find it odd that the tracker would know there were new comments, but the page wasn't showing them yet.

So... what are your thoughts on old accounts? There are some that I know are defunct... there are some that are used for commenting only (or are those included in the 150 active users)... there are some that are used rarely...

You ever think you're going to delete some? Or push them to an "inactive" state where the Username is saved, but entries are deleted?

I'm with Gossip. Much as I do use the Friends only filters at LJ, it is a different community & a different blog. I did G-blog the way it is.

Question: Why less game categories?

Defense of IE: IE is the (IIRC) the most used browser. So Gossip is more likely to have more exposure as well as more users by still allowing IE as a good browser. It is what I use, and I don't see any likelihood of me changing that. I couldn't even if I wanted to do so at work, and I'm sure there are many other people who have admin controlled machines with no ability to install new programs. I'm not saying IE is the best browser, by any stretch of the imagination, but I am saying it is something that should be supported by G-blog.

1) Recent or Friends when I'm reading and/or moderating. I glance at the Categories page only to see if there are annoucements.

2) Don't know what you're talking about. The categories aren't that useful to me I've found. The only "use" I have for them is filtering out stuff I don't want, which doesn't work because I still see them if there is more than one category chosen.

3) I like the idea of a custom set, if only for ease of searching my own entries for relevant posts.

@5 There are a lot of security experts who would highly recommend just what you suggested. It does make for more secure e-mail and therefore less likelihood of being spammed/stalked/whatever.

OTOH, it is a pain. Of course, so is getting a phone number from someone new or their address. Real world to virtual world.

Gossip is a very busy man between his job, Dana, & coding. I know he doesn't have time to read everything. I was asked to help. I managed to read everything and respond quickly (unless I was asleep) when I was unemployed. I am now employed and reading everything takes a while and I admit I've resorted to skimming occasionally. The other moderator is Hooloovoo and he is also very busy.

If you see something truly offensive, let Gossip know via the e-mail link. He can make a judgement call. Hooloovoo and I try very hard to take action when it is clear action needs to happen. Or we talk about it where you can't see it. Gossip & I had talked previously about some of these users. At the time, while annoying as hell, they hadn't done anything to outright warrant banning/bozoing. So we let it slide. G-blog is an open community. One that is welcoming and honest. Not everyone can respect that, but I know that I've learned how to be more willing to put up with stuff that I wouldn't necessarily deal with otherwise. Gossip is a truly wonderful man and cares a great deal for freedom of speech & community building. Which means there is a long way to go before you cross a line.

But do remember, all, if/when you cross that line, there is no going back and you will have made several enemies for life.

For office machines, Xyleth, I'd agree with you.

In my group of friends, comps are used mainly for Gaming. Yes they have other fuctions (word processing, e-mail, etc.) which are cross platform, but if you are a semi-serious to serious gamer, Macs just won't/don't cut it.

OTOH, for music writing/sound editing, you're better off with a Mac. If you're at all serious about it. For some graphic design stuff too, from what I understand.

So, for a personal computer (Not office machine, not home business machines) I think that the vast majority of computers are used to game. For some people, gaming is the main reason to own a computer, so they prefer PCs.

I think you're dead wrong that gaming is the least common PC-like function. Even those office machines are routinely used to access webgames that you aren't supposed to play at work.

Xyleth, I never impigned on the Macs ability to play games. You're right, the publishers make the decisions about which platforms. And since the publishers are heavy toward PC, I'm inclined to stay with PCs until that changes. I'm a gamer. I always have been. It is the main reason I have a comp.

You can't discount the games that people play. I didn't say you could only play those Java games on a PC. I said they were somethign tha tyou had to take into account when deciding how much time is spent on various things for computers.

I am not bashing Macs. In fact I have extolled their virtues. But, IMO, there are many differences between Macs and Windows based PCs. It is more than just minimal re-training. I have used Macs. I know how to use several of the OSes. I don't like it. It is not what I'm used to and it would take at least 6 months of use before I would become comfortable with it. I would need to get a two button mouse (not standard) and remap keys (not beginning user). Therefore, it would be more work for me. And I am, fundamentally, lazy.

You are defending something which is not under attack. All of us recognize that Macs are useful. OTOH, there are some things that Macs do better and there are somethings that a Windows based PC do better. Yes, it is dependant on harward to some extent. Yes there are ports for most things. I would maintain that some ports are just not as good, no matter what publishers say.

That doesn't really surprise me too much. The reasoning does, but IIRC the books were set in America. A future America, where the diversity has not been that great. OTOH, from Ender's Shadow, I do believe that we see some European minorities (French, German) but not any "of color" minorities. It might be how Card intended the world to be portrayed.

I dunno. My view on G-blog is that I don't put anything up that I would care if anyone and everyone read. Now, I have regretted some things, but I wouldn't need to be let know who is "stalking" me. This is for a couple of reasons:
1) That's what a friends list is.
2) If you know someone generates interesting comments (me, Terps, Lexi, off the top of my head) but you don't like to get involved (FanBoy) it gives you a way to do so.
3) People who don't havve a G-blog ID could do it anyway, and you'd never know.

I would disagree that there are no enlightening conclusions drawn in political discussions. In fact, I credit Terp (whom I disagree with the most often politically) for helping me broaden my horizons and encouraging me to think more analytically. I also see the other side better and enjoy learning what other people think.

Now, I'm not saying you have to comment politically, but just pointing out that in full discussions (rather than just pointing fingers and exaggerating, which is what Gossip's post & your post are) things do come to light. It is because of previous discussions that while I'm not in favor of the current adminstration's take on war & international policy I do see some point to keeping the military around and working to combat aggression & terrorism. I just have different ideas on how to do that than Bush.

I agree with you. The current American adminstration is not something that I agree with as far as foreing policy and some domestic. So, I want him out and will do what I can to make it happen.

There are some LJ/GB crossovers.

I'm one of them. I started here at GB and I intend to keep this my main blog site. OTOH, I have too many friends on LJ who have locked posts that I want to read. Hence, I needed/wanted an account there. I use that account for stupid quizzes, trying to con more people into coming over to GB, and for stuff that I wanted locked. And horoscopes. But everything else ends up on GB. I prefer GB for a great many reasons, though I do think LJ has some good ideas too.

I joined JG when that was standard. It was great. MACK was a good squads and had the Tows and specialized fighter crews to protect said Tows. They also contracted with other squads to protect from Flux and/or PCs. It definately helped you really consider carrying 500 units of Mass Converters around.

So, for clarification:

1 gal (US) = 3.79 l

US: $2.40/gal = 1.92E/gal or 0.51E/l = 1.33 lb/gal [lb = British pound, right?] or 35 p/l [p = pence, 100p per lb, right?]
UK: 81p/l [from Xyleth] = 1.16 E/l or 4.39E/gal = $1.45/l or $5.48/gal
Germany: 1.20E/l or 4.54E/l = $1.50/l or $5.68/gal = 83p/l or 314p/gal

Therefore: Germany has the most expensive gas, then the UK then the US on the basis of pure cash.

Using today's rates. This way we are all talking about the same general thing as I can't readily convert between Euros, USD and pounds and Terp's post in Euros made me confused about comparing to Xyleth's.

Not everyone has a choice. I cannot telecommute. Ever. Not as a chemist. My car is effecient and I plan to buy a hybrid [which I hear aren't all that much more effecient] next time I buy a car. I cannot use public transit to get work without it taking me 2-3 hours instead of 40 minutes, which would severly impact my quality of life in a negative fashion. When the economy is bad, you can't just "find a job closer to home" easily. I looked. There are no jobs much closer to my home. So I find a new job that is closer to FanBoy, uproot us from our apartment and move to a more expensive apartment and save on gas.

Therefore, I have to eat the costs. I do the best I can. I carpool. I use mass transit to places other than work. I drew the line at how far away I would work for gas & time reasons. I tried to find somewhere that I could do mass transit first. This job was my 5th interview and 5th choice, but I'd already been refused.

Of course, I could get drastic and quit the job I paid to train for and work somewhere that doesn't earn me as much money but I could walk to.

Well... it is more like 35 mpg as there is slow traffif so that is 1.7 gal/day = $4.11/day [not counting wear & tear on car, oil changes, and the $3 toll/day that I sometimes have to pay].

Which is more like $1027.50/annum for work alone. Doesn't include the travels after work and on weekends, so I'm sure I spend more on gas than that.

I don't like it. I do believe I have done the majority of the reasonable things availible to me. By carpooling at least 75% of the time, my carpool mate spilits the costs with me so it is really about $1027.50 on gas for the both of us [he does mass transit if I'm not taking him, as he's more willing to deal with the timing problems].

For a price, I think that is a FAIR price, given today's economy in terms of monetary value alone. In terms of philosophical price, I think on the one hand it is too cheap [as a lot people will burn oil without thinking instead of trying to carpool or mass transit if possible] and on the other too expensive [I'm still spending that oil].

I do believe in fixing the problem. As I said, hybrid or fuel cell car will be my next purchase to give a message. I support the mass transit system by using it and by voting to increase my own taxes for allotted money to mass transit [hence, why I raised my own bridge toll this past March]. I know that if I had money I was going to invest, I'd look into alternative energy resources. Beyond the motor gas, I try to reduce my energy expenditures at home and at the office by turning off monitors/lights/etc.

But I won't kill my financial sercurity to do more. Because the net effect would be less, as I would have less funds to support mass transit or other projects.

I've gotten to hear Stan speak and read a number of times. You might also want to check out "Years of Rice & Salt" as that is a novel that came out this year and is getting hot reviews.

And, conversely, if I "just" smile at a male, they take it as an invitation to more. It is flipping annoying. I'm happy and I want to share that happiness by smiling at people. But if I do, often times I'm punished for it. And if I'm smiled at, I want to believe that the person smiling is just doing so because they are happy and to smile back, but again, I've been punished too much.

You are so right. I have my ISP account which I can get through the web, and I hate it.

I love my Gmail account. It is quick, easy to use, has a decently intelligent spam trap, good for sorting, lots of space, and very stable.

The only thing I don't like is I'm all of a sudden having issues with Gmail & Mozilla.
