I am not mad at David. And I don't think he has misspoken as a matter of fact I admire his moxie. I have a blog called KissMyBlackAds and I don't know if I have the guts to be that honest! We all cower a bit when we think about the truths of the advertising industry and we bite our tongues as we simultaneously kiss ass (does that make it an ass lick?). Most people would never say these things for fear of never getting a job again in this industry. Could be for the best , eh?

in The Black Eyed Peas Refresh the Selling Out Debate - mediabistro.com: AgencySpy on mediabistro.com: AgencySpy
Why the BEP? Haven't some of the greatest rock bands of all times sold their music for commercial use? Many times the incredible music heard in spots is practically the only reason to actually pay attention to television. There are simply too many to name, but even our beloved Beatles can now be found as fodder for video games. Why is it when the BEP do the same it becomes a seminal moment in the history of 'selling out?' Granted the commercial wasn't great in fact it was most confusing. Maybe I've answered my own question here.

Music today is homeless. Innovative commercial use maybe one of the best, last resorts to keep music profitable.

I'd remain vigilant. As I do always when it comes to little ones. Rarely does anything happen in a vacuum, these behavior or even an accident should be in the purview of a parents total understanding.

LLnL The commercials I saw did not leave an impression on me and I am not a somewhat indifferent towards Terminator, good movies but not my genre. I was blown away. I love 24 (great TV), Transporter, and Iron Man, this movie affected me more than all of those put together. Now I might have been a little entertainment starved but really the bad ass factor is viscous. My hubby talked about possible plot wholes. that I missed. He still liked the movie and I loved it. Great action, really good story and awesome characters (with good acting). I feel confident about advicing people to see this movie.

in The Race Problem: Multicultural Death Traps - mediabistro.com: AgencySpy on mediabistro.com: AgencySpy
I started reading this thinking, "this could be very interesting, I think these are smart but broad questions, worthy of being asked."

So, I started reading what I hoped would be smart but maybe broad responses.

Then I found myself being broad-sided by epithets and 'smart-assed comments'.

I journeyed on a little ruffled, but onward never-the-less. I found at points there were brief flashes of brilliance and introspection only to be doused with more incendiary comments.

The remarks were epic and dizzying, I chortled, I cried, I winced, I chuckled, I was incensed.

Now, I lay under my desk in the fetal position... weeping. The sobs grow ever louder for my beloved advertising industry... will we ever get it right? Can we sloganeer our way into acceptance or perhaps, snif-snif, get a rewrite or copy correction on the way we treat one another?

Damn you internet 2.0! We had this issue all neatly tucked away and you... you, with your comments and replies... why! Just why?!!

How about everyone do something in the positive today (or once a day) towards diversifying your corner of the advertising world. This ad is offensive point-blank. If you don't see it, then in some small way you are part of the problem.

On its own it's just lame. But it is the preponderance of this type imagery combined with the historic treatment and degradation of people of color. It's this one bad depiction added to the millions that have preceded it that creates the aggregate assumption of a systematic ploy.

I believe these kind of occurrences are most often unwittingly malicious but, harmful none-the-less. (and too damn frequent)

Add it all up and that creates that cute little booger of a thing we call "racism."

in NAACP Sends A Warning Shot Across The Bow Of Big Name Advertisers - mediabistro.com: AgencySpy on mediabistro.com: AgencySpy
I'm getting diversity dizzy. It's all so difficult and so damn simple at the same time. Hire African Americans (and others). Give them time to acclimate themselves to your way(s) of doing business and let the wheat get separated from the chaff. BIG CAVEAT: Don't treat too harshly the people that fall in the average category. Most creatives fall in the average category, most creatives know this is true.

This is the ultimate campaign opportunity, get creative with this diversity influx. Make it fun or at least intriguing.

Maybe we need to hire the Obama campaign team. Those guys and gals were able to squeeze wine from a rutabaga. Maybe Black talent needs a good ad campaign and a nifty ass logo!

"Yes We Ban"

No, agencies already use that one!?

asskickerkfc For all the creative thinkers, strategists, on million dollar campaigns, why hasnt anybody come up with any decent ideas on how to fix the diversity problem. Not one damn agency?!!

Come on. Why are they so scared of colored/minority people? I know most agencies know the problem exist but damn, u have a big elephant in the room, and people still dont care. WOW its says and speaks volumes for the people in the industry, that no one other than a minority has tried to address or fix the problem. Why prolong the pain? This is totally crazy. Do they hate blacks that much?!

in monday spot(light): gatorade, "g" campaign on maximum potential
I too liked the first spot as well. I thought we were in for something great. When the next spot(s) came out I was a little stupefied, as in I didn't even link them together. On its own I guess the second spots are OK for the general audience. But we all know how something that feels like it has a seriously broad message rooted in something to believe in, if given a good base message, it can be powerful. Well, they started with tying the Gatorade to the very history or nature of any athletic endeavor and somehow flipped it into Monty Python. Its like buying a new BMW (X6) and then realizing it has a lawnmower engine and a clown car interior. They are all wonderful in their place, even Monty Python, but we bought into something else.

I think when you have a brand as strong as nike, this is a decent sustainer for that. On it's own, cinematically it's beautiful. Ground breaking concept? Nah Not so much. Did I as an ad guy enjoy it? Kinda. I give a two or a three.

in Intel Shifts To Venables, Bell From McCann - mediabistro.com: AgencySpy on mediabistro.com: AgencySpy
I'm with the ignorant guy "mccash no more" ! Us blacks should only run track and not IT departments! why aspire to more? why should an ad be aspirational?

On the real, this is why I always ask when someone call themselves conservative, I have to ask what are you conserving exactly. Well "mccash" here wants to save racism. that shit is just wrong. that ad is visual garbage. and mccash here would happily explain the subtleties of why this shit is ok. But, fails to see why this is how minds are convinced the status quo is just fine.

ChiTown Girl I think it is safe to say the ad overall is just oh so freak'n lame. I get the idea of speed etc. but it is a lousy stereotype but then again everything in advertising is built on lousy perceptions and stereotypes.

Speaking as a black woman I have to say the ad would equally suck if there was a white, black and Asian guy in the ad. It's just super weak.

I think more than a racist thing someone probably found it cheaper to use the same image over and over again. I think this might have been more of a "cheap thing" than a racist thing.

In the future McCann could do 2 things:

1. May want to invest in getting "a" black person on their staff, so maybe they could catch crap like this.

2. May want to invest in better creative talent because this ad is so freak'n lame.

Everything isn't a race issue, claiming so really hurts a "REAL" racist issue in our industry, like the fact that diversity in advertising doesn't include African American employees. Except of course in the mail room, copy room, office service...oh yeah and the administrative staff.

This is just shity advertising...

in Race And The Web: Going After Niche Markets Or Practicing Digital Segregation? on Black Web 2.0
This new browser is no more segmented than IE, Firefox or Safari. It's simply a preferential point of interest or entry. We now approach the web as a vast container of specifics. This allows us to go online the way we choose and finally have a more culturally relevant way of doing so. Niche is the new black, if you will.
