A useful tip is to reveal as little as possible about yourself online or offline when applying for goods or services. Give only your initials and surname, avoid giving your post-code, use a secondary email address.

Just because a web form has a field for your middle name doesn't mean you have to give it.

Then when you get an email addressed to 'A. B. Geezer' you'll know not to trust it.

If it's on the internet, it's going to be pirated.

1. Search on 'bad bot ban script' and using .htaccess mod_rewrite to prevent hotlinking.

2. Also put absolute URLs in your web pages; if someone copies them, and lazily upload them elsewhere, there'll still be links to your site in them.

3. Only put up marked or other 'sabotaged' bits of your work; if copied, they won't have a pristine, complete copy.

This is a good idea. There are lots of these little external hard-drive caddies available very cheaply, whereas hands-on help from a technician can be very expensive.

Google has made its own problem. PR has created a big business selling PR.

Solution: Do what traditional marketers have been saying all along, and find ways to promote your site outside the SEs. Then their traffic will be a happy bonus, rather than essential.

Cpanel + Fantastico + Wordpress + 'backup plugin' + 'plugin updater' plugin = Easy WP installs and upgrades. I used to hate having to upgrade WP after every 'security update'; now it's a breeze.

I read a smart comment on a webmaster forum, recently:

If you get a degree from a famous University like Cambridge or Harvard, it gets your foot in the door (and into a job, like as not). You also get to meet a lot of privleged people = networking.

Any other college degree and you can queue up like everyone else. It's scarcity and status.

So getting into debt spending $30,000 on a 'media studies' degree from LocalUni is a very bad idea; easy subject, high-supply-low-demand degree, non-status college.

Any course with 'studies' in the name is worthless.

If I had to do it again I'd research correspondence courses from _big name_ Universities in _high demand_ subjects. Otherwise I'd work out how I can achieve multiple, passive streams of income from my current advantages. Your youth is a golden time. If you go to college and get a crap degree and leave at 23 you have 12 years until you're 35 where you can trade on your 'youth'. After that, you better have something else to trade on.

Colleges are businesses. They're touting for your money. They don't care if it's a waste of time for you, job-wise. And working-class people, so proud the first one in their family is going to college, get suckered into the mediocre-degree-machine.

Did a quick search on your Amstrad on eBay Au and USA and found none. Must be quite obscure. We did have a shop in London here in the UK that sold old gaming gear, so there's a market out there somewhere.

I'm trying to get rid of gear at the moment. I find it weighs on your mind and fills up all your storage space (and depreciates in value too darn quickly).

The way G00gl3 is so finicky right now the smart thing is to make a site that will attract humans first.

For SE0 all you need to do is to make sure the page has the keyword in the page name, title and a heading, pretty much, then get a few links, then move on.

In reply to your remark about Google.ca liking your site: Maybe your site's IP number is seen as Canadian? I had a site hosted in the UK with a .com domain, and because of the way IP addresses are doled out, it was registered as being in the Netherlands. Result: site wouldn't rank in Google UK SERPs.

As for Blogrush, I'd wondered about its value. If it's not some form of link exchange _and_ it doesn't bring traffic, I don't see the value.

Sorry to be a 'bear', but unless you want them for spamming purposes, cheap domain registrars should be avoided.

Getting a domain away from a sub-standard registrar can be a nightmare, and for what? To save a few bucks?
