Good article! I'm enjoying your guest blogging here. You always manage to touch home with your insights. I actually try to avoid writing lengthy emails when I'm incredibly sleep-deprived for fear that I'll send something that can be read the wrong way. Like you said, there are no take backs.

A silly story for ya: my roommate had to email her paper to her professor before the midnite deadline. He was a bit of a bully in class. His name was Professor Harden, but she jokingly referred to him as "Professor Hard on." She was rushing to finish it, and hit the send button at 5 minutes to midnite. Then I heard a loud "Oh, crap!" She started her email with "Dear Professor Hardon."

It's good to see your posts again!

I went 2.5 weeks without the internet, and I missed it. I missed the feeling of the smooth keys underneath my finger tips. I missed the gentle clacking sound they made with each tap. The benefits? No more tendonitis. No more eye strain. And (gulp), more human interaction! I realized how socially awkward I've become. But during this time away, I smiled and got smiles back! Real smiles, not emoticons. I made eye contact, and I hugged.

When I returned to the States, I dreaded answering all those emails and entering the working world (and blogging world again).

Now, I long for human interaction. And I hope some day to meet you in person, Miss Ophelia.

Hi Jeff,

This is one of my favs too! I think this one + the one w/ Ralph were the most fun to create. It might also be because they used more analog methods. Digital is so convenient—you don't need to worry about gathering your materials or carrying around brushes. You just have to worry about compy crashing.

Ja, it'd be cool if I was a storyboard artist, but it takes me a LONG time to draw people. Now, if I could be a monster storyboard artist, I'd be set. ;)

Good morning! Ok, ok, I'll post the girl sketches later (when I finish them).

Aye, I set this up in my bathroom (that's my counter top). I turned off all the lights and used 2 LEDs to light the whole thing. The blue LED was positioned on the left and was hitting the tall vase on an angle. The white LED was positioned in the center and was hitting the small, overturned tumbler.

When I was creating my washes, I painted around the areas that were supposed to be reflective (leaving the white flecs alone). It's sort of training your mind to think the opposite. Instead of blocking out the shadows, you're blocking out the highlights.

So...when are you going to show me some of your animation? ;)

Well, the eyes are really the star of this show. =) Glad you liked no. 14 + the process, hehe.

The lasso is a good, quick tool. Usually I'm pretty anal + use the pen tool for my selections, but eh, it's nice to do things down + dirty every once in a while. The OS blots allow me more freedom than I'm used to... plus they let my imagination go wild.

Levofloxacin will do ya good. It's one of the sweetest antibiotics out there—it stops multiplication of bacteria by preventing their reproduction + genetic material repair. Careful, cos the side effects are vomiting, diarrhea (or constipation), + headaches... (with possible itchiness + rash). Yes, I totally have read the fine print + fair balance for this drug before.

I'm not saying that my Mac can do no wrong. And I do mention (and sometimes post) my frustrations (ie the repeated awful spinning beachball of death). Both Macs & PCs have their own set of problems. I've had my Mac crash several times; I've even encountered the blinking folder with a question mark upon startup. Then again, I've had booting problems on my old PC & seen the blue screen of death a few times. (shrug) Not worth getting all worked up over this. ~___^

Context, Penguin. Context. The interviewer was asking him on his thoughts about illustration and photography. It takes a lot of imagination and creativity to create some mind-blowing illustration that moves and touches the heart.

To your credit, the coming up with the internet was no easy task (yay, Al Gore). It's hard to imagine something that allows info to be spread and accessible in seconds (and has the ability to connect folks from all around the world). Powerful stuff.

Oh yes, there are penguins in South Africa! ^__^ The African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) are also called jack ass penguins because they make this awful braying sound.

Penguins live in a lot of different places. There are cute, little blue penguins in New Zealand called blue fairy penguins (Eudyptula minor).

Good morning! Hmm, well, I'm not always that coherent at 3 in the morning (when I usually decide to post). ~__^ I'm still probably not fully awake at 10 in the morning, now.

I wasn't even sure if I should post about this as I didn't want to come off as being bitter or angry when I'm not. I was more surprised to see my illustration being used in such a strange, new context. Really, the post was to showcase the real heroes, B and P, for going out there to defend my work.

Part of what I meant to come across was that there's nothing new about the idea of drawing a kiss. So if the fellow got inspiration from my illo and decided he wanted to draw his own kiss, good for him. But as you mentioned, this person jacked mine off the web, made some minor mods, and passed it off as his own (which I don't approve of). I would actually be quite upset if he won and profited off of my design.

I hope you're having a lovely Saturday! Thanks for your kind words about the First Kiss print. I appreciate the suggestion, but it's a little late for touch-ups though, as it has already been printed (yay, offset litho).

Oh, I've tried various positions and angles for the figures (not all posted because there would be about 20 different screen shots). When slightly puckered, the lips extend beyond chin (in a profile view), so the chins wouldn't be touching. Haha, I've looked at myself in the mirror (and felt quite foolish) at kissing the air. Later, a few of my friends kindly offered to pose for me. Much thanks goes out to K, S, and K—I had the necks all wrong until they came along. ^__^

Advertising is an easy target. My guess is that the Decapitator is reacting to what he views as false messages or to the oversaturation of advertising in our cities. I agree that there isn’t a heck of a lot of substance, but the idea is amusing. I’m curious to see what he comes up with next, as this current trend does have the potential to get played out quickly.

What do you think of Ron English's work where he modifies mainstream advertisements with his own art?

It's such an awful Paintbrush drawing!

Penguin's head isn't THAT big. I just can't use the Paintbrush tools that well. I'm so used to Photoshop commands. I kept on hitting the bracket keys (out of habit) to try and enlarge + shrink the brush sizes.

It's quite alright! Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, and it's always nice to get other perspectives. ^____^

Well, for my little game, I took the photos out of their collections, so it's probably not a fair viewing. Yes, the subject matter isn't anything new. After all, how many times have we passed stranded motorists? But I guess I was more interested in Amy's choices and her thought process for capturing images of vulnerable moments, power, and failing technology. Her work has an honest, almost snapshot quality to it.

I get so many mailings from stock houses and commercial photographers, mostly slick and polished work (which has its place and isn't necessarily a bad thing). So it's a nice break for my eyes to see weeks' worth of traveling and photographing people on the highway side. I'm not a rubbernecker, so I would don't get the opportunity to see the faces or get a glimpse into their stories.

Hee hee, I kind of like looking at a still pond or peeling paint and finding beauty in the ordinary.

Noted. But you got to admit, if that was the case, it would have been pretty jerky of her to just click and run.

From the looks of her photos though, most of the trouble seems to be with the engine or something under the hood. It's a bit doubtful that she's a trained mechanic or that she drives with a trunk full of auto repair tools/spare parts. I didn't imagine her rolling up her sleeves and getting dirty. Rather, I thought she might give them company while they wait, or at least offer her cell phone so they could make a call.

I also think she must have been pretty kind when approaching them, otherwise, they wouldn't let her take their photo/their reactions in the photo would reflect their disapproval.

Yup, that's it! Although there are other variations of the game where a piece of paper is divided into folded segments, and each player draws an image on his segment and extends part of the drawing onto another blank segment. The next player works off this partial drawing without knowledge of what the previous player has drawn. He too extends part of his drawing into the next segment for the next player. The game goes on until the folded segments are all filled and the final drawing is unveiled.

From the looks of it, only the trigger book, a copy of Sherlock Holmes, is bolted down to some mechanism. I'm guessing that the other volumes are heavy enough so that they won't get flung when the door opens (that or that the bookcase door moves slowly).

To answer your inquiry, each Daydream Believer print weighs only 2.56 oz. I know that the 80 lb weight paper stock sounds heavy, but it's a bit misleading. Paper is measured by its weight per ream (500 sheets).

All the curves were drawn on my trusty Powerbook in Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool. I practically went cross-eyed trying to get all the transitions down. It wasn't until after the piece was printed that I discovered the spiral tool! Oh well, it was good practice.

Thanks! Yup, they do harden up quite quickly. The sugar paste is more easily molded and shaped than fondant (and cheaper to purchase, which is a plus). The only drawback is that it is very sticky (will stick and clump to your fingers while you're shaping). Strangely enough, even though it has no problem sticking to my fingers, it has trouble sticking to other pieces of sugar paste (ears were a pain to get on).

Its natural color is white. I used food coloring gel and kneaded it in to color it. I also used the same gel to paint in the detail like Totoro's whiskers. I hope that helps!

PS. The Taiwan dough thing seems like a good idea, too. Would you have them custom made or import the dough and make them yourself?

Wait a tick, you like scones? I was going to ship some out to you, but my scones are kind of like a cross between a biscuit and muffin top in terms of texture (not taste). I know you're anti-muffin, so I didn't want to chance it. Dah, I will bake for you next time, dearie!

Rode the double-decker on the way in, and the single on the way out.

Thanks for stopping by & commenting! Well, from the sound of things, you seem to be headed in the right direction. I was told that 1/2 of the portfolio should be drawings from life—esp full figures without too much cropping.

Have you met with an ACCD admissions adviser or visited a National Portfolio Day? They can give you the personal, comprehensive portfolio review and let you know what you need to work on before you apply. If you're in the California area, you can make an appointment to stop by the campus and get your work reviewed by calling 626-396-2373.

A while back, I did buy myself a spiffy stay-wet palette, but I rarely use it. The thing is massive (like the size of my torso), and I already tote around quite a bit. I reuse the same paper plate until the bottom wears out, and my colors are simple enough, that I can mix them and match without a problem. I'm a nomadic painter; I tend to set up in other people's kitchens/dining rooms. When I do digital work, I hang out in cafes.

Oh, ho ho, there ARE sparkles in there! Well, tiny iridescent flecks if you really want to get to it. I really liked my blush color, so I mixed it with clear gesso and dabbed it on there.
