I LIVE on these.

When there was that meat safety scare, and they were taken off the shelves, I almost starved. Thankfully when they came back they were super cheap!

in Twitter Updates for 2008-03-30 on HighTechDad Blog
Well this was a good excuse for me to load up Yahoo Pipes for the first time. Cool service! I think I was able to create a feed that filters out posts with "Twitter Updates" in the title.

(I'm a Twitter addict myself, BTW)

Do you have an RSS feed that excludes your Twitter updates?

in Finally Jailbroke my 1.1.4 Firmware iPhone on HighTechDad Blog
Are the new 3rd party apps you're referring to 1.1.3/1.1.4 specific? I've still got 1.1.1 running, mostly because I've been waiting for more apps to move to the new firmwares.

Thanks for the guide!

in DD-WRT + OpenVPN + LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini Home Edition = Listen to my Home Music at Work! on HighTechDad Blog
I had a nice reply written, but the CAPTCHA was wrong, so I lost it... I'll try to recreate it (and hit command S before submitting this time)

I already have DD-WRT installed, so I wasn't too afraid of that. However, I tried OpenVPN on Leopard in the past (with Tunnleblick) and quickly got lost with trying to generate keys.

I just tried Hamachi again. From what I understand, the tun/tap drivers only work for the command line version, and not the GUI (please correct me if I'm wrong). I couldn't get past the "make install" step. It's embarassing, but I'm still a fish out of water with a lot of the Unix operations.

I don't see why someone hasn't already brought an easy to use, consumer oriented VPN solution to market. I guess it would cut into profits from the expensive professional solutions?

I have been wanting to setup my router as a VPN server with DD-WRT, so I'm glad you did this write up. Unfortunately, it looks like it's over my head and free-time. I guess I'm waiting until HamachiX gets updated for Leopard, or biting the bullet and patching the command-line version of Hamachi.

in Tracking: PowerBook 15" Recalled Battery Replacements Defective? on HighTechDad Blog
My friend has a 15" Powerbook and received a new battery under the recall earlier this year. It recently got to the point that it wouldn't even hold an hour of charge. She called Apple and they over-nighted her a new battery without question.

I can't provide serial numbers and such right now, but I'll see if I can. Looks like there may be a valid issue here.

For the record, I also participated in the recall for my 12" Powerbook, and my replacement battery still holds a 4-5 hour charge (which is what I consider normal). It DOES seem like it may be swelling a little, it doesn't fit flush with the case of the Powerbook anymore, but this may also be due to some changes in what I carry in my bag, and I may be warping the case a little from external force.

in iPhone: Netflix queue management meets iPhone with iFlix on HighTechDad Blog
I was completely shocked by how robust this application is, especially for a first release. I agree that any Netflix user needs to install this right away. Much faster than surfing netflix.com on an edge connection.

I'm also continually impressed with how the built-in UI elements of Mobile OS X are so appropriate for so many applications. This Netflix app uses the same interface scheme as the iPod app and Installer.app. Across these different applications, the same layout is proving to be perfectly appropriate. I especially love how the system handles re-ordering lists, and was downright giddy to see it implemented for managing the Netflix queue.

in iPhone: Jailbreaking 1.1.2 - This time it WORKED! on HighTechDad Blog
I'm glad it worked for you this time. Is Independence necessary if you've already got a jailbroken 1.1.1 phone? Could I just run OctoPrep and the update to 1.1.2?
