in City of Pillars / Chapter 3 on Footnotes to the Human Species
Really good stuff. You're doing an amazing job of slowly building the tension. I also like the hints of the back story regarding the politics.

I've actually started writing another story, "Lies Beneath," which actually follows the politics and begins with the line, "I was there the day the former President and his Human flunkies were executed."
